You mention a guy getting his foot run over...I grew up in a small steel town, Middletown, OH. B&O was king in the area. Around 1973, we were all 12-13 years old, bunch of us had big fun jumping on and off of trains, see who had the biggest set, who was willing to jump the fastest trains, right up til Billy got his foot ran over. He didn't yell, he just said, "OUCH". Then he pulled his shoe off and we all said a lot more than OUCH! The front 4" of his foot were basically hamburger. Our days of train jumping were over. Fascinating machines, but you gotta respect them.
The frog that rises we called a high lift frog, some railroads call it a jump frog or lift frog. Welding the rail together in the field can be either Boutet or thermite. The process is very similar for both. Retired in Feb. after 40 years.
So frogs they're called, I've walked more on the ballast then riding rails and looked at a few frogs wondering what they do. So thanks for your unique style of teaching Shoestring Have a great adventure
@Trump Grass You obviously have thought about it too. I mean, this comment thread is on Shoestring's video. Don't be so scared of the word "illegal". It's only "illegal" if you get caught.
@Trump Grass look some people are looking for a adventure and exitment and like trains. Some people like taking it old-school to the thirties and ride freight trains. So if you have a problem with freight hoppers then don't pay attention to them. And let us freight riders just do our thing and ride freight trains and you do somthing you like to do
@Trump Grass and here you are watching like a dumb ass...your a big man!!! Your better than everyone....Leave shoestring alone, you don’t like it leave
I called the guide rails "check rails", guess my wording was off a bit. I see the one in this video has a lot of wear marks showing it is doing its job. Stay safe and healthy Shoestring, I look forward to all of your videos.
I was once as we know here a Car and Wagon Examiner, I believe you call them Carmen (where Westinghouse rules). It is very interesting to see the differences between countries. Diamond crossings are very rare in Australia but as we know the basics are all the same. Tracks are owned by the Governments who maintain the system they then lease timetable space to the private freight companies. We run standard gauge in my part of the country but because of conflicting State Governments a federation type thing we have numerous gauges across the country. Your vids are tops. and other live railfan vids are also very informative.

Hi ShoeString! Love all of your wisdom and info...but what are the little wire connection I see in the four-way? I it an electrical connection and if so, can the rails be shorted together?
I grew up in Des Moines Ia. Right near Rock Island switch yard , then changed to Chicago /northwestern railroad plus the big green Burlington northern now it's BNSF railroad I used to hop freight cars when I was 10 to 12 years old we used to go in the cabooses to steel the railroad torpedoes and flairs but those torpedoes were louder than a M 80 fire cracker. I wish I could still ride my leg's are bad now I'll be 59 this year. Railroad fan since I was 3 year's old used a railroad simulator on the computer for 3 year's learned to operate the loco and dynamic breaking 200 cars long 3 DPU's one in the middle 2 on the end Mojave Ca. to Bakersfield 2.5 to 3 % down grade.
Shoestring, have you ever known anyone who was killed riding the train? Just curious. I've seen 4 people killed by trains, 2 Norfolk Southern, 1 CSX, and 1 Amtrak. I work near next to the rails in a job that supports them. The Amtrak was the worst, the person just exploded into meat flaps because the Amtrak train moves so fast. The only way you could tell it was a person, is because his right hand survived and was stuck in the front of the locomotive's front coupler. I watched the medical examiner collect up what they could of his remains and I told him, "whatever they're paying you, it ain't enough!".
miss the videos of you riding trains with the views of the country side flying past. do those videos get demonetized? is that why you dont show it very much anymore? also like seeing you board the trains. mabye it was stobe i was thinking of that showed that. anyways take care shoestring
Hey shoestring. I need to find out what trains to take from Kingsport or Bristol to Washington dc. I have hitchhiked all over but have not had anyone to help me figure out how to ride the rail. I have a bucket and full gear because I'm homeless so everything you do I do without the trains. My Dr is in D.C. and I have to go every two weeks so any help and info would be extremely helpful

Shoe, At very end of the video you told a compelling story of a guy who got his foot run over. You go to the head end and tell the engineer, they haul him off on a wooden stretcher..... and the story ends. What happened to him, did they save the leg ? In which video do you talk about your accident ?
Here in the UK, all running lines have AWS (Auto-warning System) on all track circuits. I don't think I've seen an AWS ramp between the rails on any of your videos. I can see how, with the huge block sections on US lines, it could be a problem. Do any US lines have Automatic Train Control or AWS on all their route? Is it something you see much? Blessings and thanks fella.
Positive Train Control --PTC, is slowly being implemented in the US with great difficulty and expense due to complexity of task and requirements. It is mandated in the US by the federal govt. since a horrendous head-on collision on Sept. 12, 2008 in Chatsworth, California. Start date delayed continually over many years, and very sporadic in installation location. The task is much more difficult than it would at first appear. There really is nothing in the US that is similar to the AWS system in the UK.
