  • In this video I explain how I expanded my electronic drum kit adding cymbals and pads and more. The Alesis Crimson comes with three toms, a crash and a ride. It provides ports for an added tom and crash. I will show you how I added 5 more ports to my kit allowing the addition of a dedicated cowbell, splash cymbals, third crash, side tom/snare and more.
    Thank you www.drumsplitters.com - Please be sure to check them out if you like my method of electronic drum kit expansion.

    The same trick works on the Nitro Mesh module. I combined 2 full kits together to get a big sturdier rack with everything installed on it. Used 2 of the mesh pads as bass drums to replace the crappy kick towers, everything else is plugged normally or via splitters. Crash cymbals are in the intended inputs to make sure the choke works on both. Tom rims are redirected to 3 more cymbals and the extra floor tom. Kept my snare as a dual zone. Next step is gonna be the module that I'll replace with one that supports 3 zone cymbals for a more functional ride. Probably gonna be a Crimson since everything works pretty much the same. Thanks a lot for the video. Keep on drummin' ! :)

      The cymbal pads from Guitar Hero drums work perfectly. They make great cowbells or wood blocks and are small so they can be mounted anywhere on the kit. You can pick up old GH drums from garage sales for next to nothing.

    I just recently purchased a Crimson II SE and I have an old Alesis DM5 Pro e-kit that I am going to try to connect both brains together with a short (50cm) MIDI Cable so I can use my old DM5 drum & cymbal pads to expand my Crimson e-kit.
    Also, I think with my Toontrack EZ Drummer software, I am getting more Latency issues with the Crimson brain than I used to with the DM5 brain, so I'll try to connect the Crimson into the DM5 then go into my Steinberg UR44 Interface & PC.
    I figure it's worth trying every configuration to get the lowest Latency possible seeing as I use the EZ Drummer or UgriTone Kult Drums software samples, so... 😘

    Great vids bill! Alesis owes you getting me to buy the crimson 2! I’ve been loving it! Just coming over from acoustic. I had a question. I am planning on adding three cymbals to my crimson 2 with drum splitters for the Rims of the three Toms. I am using ez drummer 2 and plan on crossgrading to superior soon. I play a lot of metal so I’m planning on using the three extra cymbals as a splash, China and either another o zone crash/China/crash or whatever what I’m doing needs.
    My question is do you have any recommendations for the trs cables to use and also which cymbals to purchase? I don’t mind the crimson cymbals but they are all triple zone which I’m assuming won’t work with the drum splitter. And like you said in the video I understand using them as accent cymbals to avoid having the need to choke them. I appreciate your time sharing knowledge in the community! And answering questions for viewers! Thanks Bill!

    Thanks Bill good video. I understand how to split but on my new Alesis Strike Pro SE I can't seem to figure out how to assign the new sound to the additional cymbal?? I wish you had shown that part in your video. So again I understand how to split off my tom but when I get into the module I am having a tough time figuring out how to assign that new sound to the "rim" portion of the tom (which is now going to the new cymbal). Can you offer me any instruction on the module part of this?? Its driving me crazy!! Thanks Bill!!

    Ace. I was wondering if something like this was possible. You've done it already. I'm going to be doing this for sure.
    I tried my old Guitar Hero cymbal pads and they work perfectly. Plus they are cheap to pick up. They will be great as a cowbell, woodblock etc.

    Hi Bill, first of all thanks for giving your time to show us your work.
    I tried to buy a regular splitter to my Alesis MD10 pro and it didn’t work. I did exactly what you said. However, I haven’t tried this specific splitter. Do you believe it’s the splitter?
    Thanks

    Very informative. Thank you for posting. I was wanting to eventually change out the stock cymbals and add the gen16's or something similar for that real feel cymbal but now I can add them onto instead of just exchanging them. Do you think it would work on the crimson 2?

      @DrumCoversbyBill  5 років тому +1

      Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Yes, I know for a fact they will work on the Crimson 2. Actually took one to my local Guitar Center and tried it because one of the guys who work there wanted to see it.

    So you can change the way your drums sound? I thought when you hit a drum it made noise? I guess this is just over my head. Your new studio looks great and I am anxiously awaiting to see a cover.

    • @DrumCoversbyBill
      @DrumCoversbyBill  5 років тому

      Yes, on e kits they are pretty quite when you strike them, sound is produced from the module (the brain of the drum kit). When you hit a pad on an electronic kit it sends a signal to the module which produces the sound your hear. I set my kit up for every song I play and try to get it as close to the original song as possible. I typically spend more time setting up the kit for the right sounds then actually shooting the cover. Thank you for the kind words. Next week will be my first cover in the new studio. I have a cover in DrumMans studio coming out tomorrow.

    So I have the Alesis DM10 MKII and got a splitter to add cymbal. But I can’t get it to work right. When I hit the head I also hear the cymbal too. It’s really annoying. But when I hit the cymbal (rim) that part works fine. Nothing works to stop the rim bleed when you hit the head.

    Thanks for the video!! But I have a question... Do you use regular drum gear to attach the extra cymbals and toms? Could you please tell me how do you added them to the kit? I have a DM10X kit and I'd like to ad a DIY cowbell and splash... Thx in avanced!! 😊

    • @DrumCoversbyBill

      Thanks for the great question. Yes, I did use standard mounting hardware from Guitar Center. I used a Sound Percussion Labs SPC21 Cymbal Arm Clamp to move my ride cymbal, I purchased a used Yamaha cymbal stand (also at Guitar Center) for my splash cymbal. For the toms and cow bells I used a Roland Drum Set Clamp (MDH-12) purchased off Amazon. Hope this answers your question. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

    I've only been able to make this work with toms (assigning tom 4 to a China and splitting tom 3 head/edge into toms 3 and 4) - can this method work with cymbal triggers or only drums?

      I did try it us I ng a crash cymbal and it worked however you'll lose the second zone of that cymbal.

    Is there a limit to the number of additions you can make?

    • @DrumCoversbyBill
      @DrumCoversbyBill  5 років тому

      Yes, I am limited by the number of available dual zone pads. In this case 4 toms and 1 extra crash. If I expand the extra crash, I will lose the ability to "mute" it. Only other way to expand now is add another module. Ive actually been considering a second hand Roland module which would allow me to use a traditional moving Hit hat.

    Any normal person: Snare, bass, 4 toms, 2 crash, hat, ride, 5 extra cymbals.
    Me: Bass, *14 toms.*
    *Note:* From my understanding, you could do this with the ride an get yet another cymbal. Maybe I'm wrong, enlighten me.
