Pontiac never made a big block or small block from 326-455 engines have the same external dimensions just different bore and stroke sizes and main journal sizes 326-400 3" main 421-455 3.25" main
The 455 was discontinued after 1974. The 400 rated at 185 hp was the only engine available. That is until the summer of 1975 when Pontiac brought back the 455. They put H.O. stickers in front of the 455 decal on the shaker scoop which was not functional. Public outcry made Pontiac remove the H.O. decals because it was a diservice to the 1970-72 H.O. engines. The 1975-76 455 was rated at 205 hp that's stock. And no automatic was offered with the 455 just a stick. In 1977 Pontiac dropped the 455 engine for good. The top engine was the 400 T/A. The 400 T/A was made available from 1977-79. In '79 the Pontiac 400 T/A was limited and the Olds 403 (6.6 liter on the hoodscoop) was plentiful. I owned a '75, 78 and '79 Trans Am. Bought new right off the dealer's lot. Prices new were between $5,400 to $9,300 the later was the Smokey and the Bandit black car with gold pinstripping, gold Firebird decal on the hood as well as t-tops. It had the Olds 403 mated to an automatic transmission.
