Magnifique...
The exact same thing has happened to me, too! The times that I've accidentally left the record playing, I would find myself waking up in tears--because of this 2nd movement!
To play note perfect from memory while conducting is possible only for a truly great musician. Lenny, you were a great artist and teacher. We did not deserve you.
Fully transcendent! With all the talk about Bradley Cooper and his nose, I think we are forgetting Lenny. One of the great geniuses of the 20th Century, here he is, with a television camera right up in his face, calmly playing and conducting at the same time. This is possibly the most beautiful piece of music ever written (Adagio assai from Ravel's piano concerto in G) and Lenny feels it to the depths of his soul. So exquisite, and so handsome. Bradley, you have a big nose AND big shoes to fill...
like bernstein, i have played piano for more than half a century. he was a pianist of great talent who didn't play much, a composer who let time slip past him (hear 'jeremiah'), a conductor who only knew what he wanted when it was beyond his reach... as a child, i disliked him because he didn't do enough, and i thought he didn't care. now i know he did: i heard his heart breaking in these notes, and he broke mine, as well. ah, lenny, i misjudged you--may i do half as well, ever... thank you.
This is easily the stupidest comment about Bernstein I've ever seen. The only thing you have in common with him is how long you played the piano. He didn't care enough? He's a genius. What the hell is wrong with you?
Really touching story. I hope all is going well with you. Its in our nature as humans to immediately think downly of someone when they do or say things that aren't in our taste. But remember, never judge a book by its cover. Everything we do is for a purpose whether we know it or not. Not everything we do may sit well with others. nothing we do will ever meet the satisfactory of others, but at the end of the day none of that matters as long as you and everyone else are playing their role of being respectful to others and that we're happy and content with ourselves. This also includes not judging people and being so quick to making assumptions based on their actions as you have no way of knowing why they do what they do.
@@davisatdavis1 Lots of self righteous talk... In the end people like him eclipse thanks to their means other very talented artists and performers just like Mozart has placed so many excellent composers into the attic... Very sad. Media's fault indeed but it is helped along with financial resources. Wish humans were not such followers.
The sheer beauty of this piece could never be denied, no matter who the pianist is. But Leonard Bernstein is the type of person who reveals all the expressive power of Ravel's beautiful music.
For many years, I thought Bernstein belonged to the classic generation of musicians, I was ill-prepared or even want to secretly-admitted that he was one of the very best conductor and piano player of the time. With years passing, I truly believe now that he played the very best Ravel piece here, even compared with many of the best piano players there is now. I could not find a better interpretation and intensity of playing better than he did.
This is one of the few performances in of this mvt. in which the listener is enraptured and transcends reality into sheer bliss for a brief moment. Bernstein becomes the perfect medium for listeners to commune with such masterful beauty and pure emotion. Not to mention, Ravel's sense of simplicity that leaves one in awe of what music can be. Thank you, Bernstein, and thank you, Ravel.
Suddenly, I miss my Mom again, now on 07 April 2020; Don't know why, it came out of the blue, and ... I'm here. It feels like where she lived all of her life. Thank you so much Mrs Ravel and Bernstein for somehow bringing me my mom back again.
03 June 2020. I'd like so much to see you mom, miss you so much, miss so much to talk to you, you used to be my best friend. But I'm fine, and doing well. Just wanna see you for a while.
11 June 2020. I've just got one million. Realized that there's no money to bring her back, one pound or a million, you're going to feel the same way, you're going to miss the beloved one the same.
Nothing is more astonishing than watching Bernstein conduct an orchestra from the piano as he plays this concerto. Only a true genius could play, conduct, and compose like this man did.
David Fray does it, and many others. it is more common than you think when recording for example... Just because LB had a huge PR support behind him...
vigwig every other version I've heard of this, that's the part where most screw up. To call Lenny Bernstein a perfectionist would be an understatement.
when i watch great musicians that have reached a certain age, like Bernstein in this video or Horowitz playing a Bach choral and of course Kempf w/ the moonlight sonata, there's something heartbreaking and moving going on in me. I always think of them looking back to their lives, having accepted their fate, and awaiting for their time with serenity...
THIS IS NOT TOO SLOW MAN. This is the correct tempo, and surtainly the most expressive version ever of this part!!!! No one darred to play it so slow and emotinal, cos that demand´s a darring that most musicians don´t have. You see Bernstein was the music itself as Christa Ludwig once said in an interview, and I agree a 100 %, and that shows here. He loves this piece og music. And that is the way it has to be, and regretingly not is the case most of the time. Unique music that is what this is.!!
This is SO Bernstein! Ever try to EITHER conduct or play this particular piece? What's going on here is a technical tour-de-force from Lenny (not to mention from the highly-alert orchestra), even before you get to swoon at the beauty of it all. I think, with the conductor at the piano, the second movement suddenly becomes the most difficult. So much gauzy, floating time to hold together... the players staring into his eyes for every indication of what he wants... very very difficult. Bravo!
Nobody like lenny peforms this song the best. You cant say that a mastero like him can peform and conduct a piano concerto. He even gives great face jestures while he performs. Im honestly gonna say i wish lenny was still living. I would love to perform under his leadership.
It's like that extra slow tempo Glenn Gould Brahm's First Piano concerto that he conducts and comments on....the one that is often replayed on radio. It's really sublime. Thank you for posting it.
It's also too funny how they didn't get along at all.. They obviously admired one another's skills but one can sense the tension between them... Both strong personalities but very different approaches... G. Gould more non sense, straightforward, self effacing and LB with lots more frills, showmanship and PR.
Yes....Feel the LOVE that Master Lenny Pours into each individual who is listening, participating in his Art that it is all about LOVE.........Healing?Changing the Heart...DIVINE! if this is not Divine, what is? and for all those intellectual minds trying to find fault in the creations and doings of this Master, go and take a Deep Breath and Feel for once the Beauty and Delight of the conducting and playing of this master that was born to stay forever; HAPPY BORTHDAY MASTER LENNY!
This Is the best version of Ravels Piano concerto ever! Here again Bernstein Chooses the right tempo. I love the emotinal Way he always choose in a slow performance. This Here is so Beautiful and felt. He was such an emence Personality , a very special Musician put Here to show how it could be done. I love this music. This version is just flawless. Thats Music. all pianists and conductors should listen to this masterful Version.
It's the way it is supposed to be played... He didn't invent the tempo. Adagio, 60 beats, right? It's slow. He plays well but let's not attribute to him more than is due just because he got lots more public attention and opportunities than other very worthy musicians.
absolutely wonderful ! what a wonderful soul and complex mind of Ravel and a lot of emotions in in Bernstein's feelings and performance... Thank you for sharing this !
What else after such a masterpiece ?? This is just impressive, and my big regret is that Ravel had such a short life. I wish he could have written much more pieces like that...
@musicathena I know what you mean. This movement always brings tears to my eyes. When the orchestra comes in it breaks my heart. I've liked his conducting and he's written some excellent show tunes but this is the first time I've heard him play and conduct a piano concerto. Kudos
One who is able to perform while conducting at such level has the right to alter the tempo a bit! The music is so beautiful that the tempo doesn't matter that much any more.....
even though i know he is conducting them, ive never heard an orchestra so together with the soloist EVER!!! and this is really beautifully and tenderly played :]
There is a casstte of this. When I first heard it in 1984 it brought me to tears. It is the most honest music I have ever heard.😢
One of the pieces of music that tracks my life. The break up with my first love in 1979. Still can’t listen to this without tears in my eyes........
My favorite. I play it when I wake up from dream in tears.

Gracias..!!!

yes
BRAVO BERNSTEIN: The pianist, the composer and maestro.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Leonard Bernstein must have been the last ever pianist/ conductor/composer - I can think of no-one else comparable.
If only Ravel had lived to hear Bernstein's exquisite interpretation of this masterpiece.
Exactly!
Better yet, Helene Grimaud . . .
@@SusanaWdeE Better than all of them is Martha Argerich, ( And I love and admire Lenny but...)
Fortunately for Ravel he died before.Listen to Martha Argerich instead.
I juste cry and cry because I feel like in heaven!
