    Shelby, I love your nutrition and management videos. Keep it up. I have changed how I feed in part based on your success. Trickle feeding with hay nets and piles of alfalfa as well as scattered tubs of soaked forage and root veggies keeps mine on a modified sort of trackless track system. They love it. They go from area to area as a herd, then will disperse to eat from various piles and tubs, come together to "migrate" to another area...it looks like a wild herd following a daily routine. Minimal standing (just to nap, stand "guard" while their herdmates nap, or short stints in the shelter when it's really icky out), lots of casual walking, little bits of playtime spurred on by the foal...and my ottbs are thriving. Even my lactating mare is blooming with zero grain. Just 24/7 coastal in hay nets, alfalfa hay, occasional chopped timothy blend for variety, then once daily Vermont Blend, soaked forage, aloe vera for everyone, extra fat with chia/flax/hemp hearts, a variety of salt licks all around. My 4 month old foal is easily weaning on soaked forage with balancer.

    A little correction according to multiple nutritionists I spoke with
    You shouldn't use boiling water on food. It destroys nutrients (mainly vitamins). You should be able to stick and keep your finger in the water for few seconds (you can be uncomfy in winter but should be cooler in summer as feed will drop the temp of water in winter pretty significantly)

    Absolutely agree. You don`t need to feed thoroughbreds grain to maintain condition.Just good alfalfa hay & good grass seems to work well with our herd of thoroughbreds of all ages. Of course always have trace mineral blocks available to them as well.Lots of clean water is important too.

    2 of my OTTB mares, one a momma with a 4 month old Irish Sport Horse foal at her side, are forage only now x 2 years. The only grain they've gotten is from small amounts of balancer (Hallway Pure & Simple). They are both slightly overweight by the Healthy Horse app (by 20-30#) and by the Henneke scale are a 5 and 5.5. My newest mare is right off the track by a month, came to us racing fit so a body scale of 3-3.5 and solid muscle. She's 5 and is a warhorse. She's put on at least 50# based on her body scale, is a solid 4. She was confused by the soaked alfalfa and beet pulp, but took to it within the first week and now gets excited at feeding time and goes to her bowl. I will never go back. I am now a pro at soaking and timing feeds, how to add supplements (just fats, aloe vera and balancer), and even how to creep feed my foal and keep everyone in great condition on less money, feeding them as close to the way nature intended as possible.

    I lost my senior gelding unexpectedly in December 😭 He was a pretty easy keeper. He was on cube diet the last 3 1/2 years due to worn teeth and had cushing’s. He was pretty much just a companion and i never gave him grain, except vitamin/minerals and some arthritis supplements. I think of horses in the wild, they don’t get all the fancy feeds and grains. I had switched over to Mad Barn about 2 yrs ago. I loved the fact you can give them your feed analysis and they come back with suggestions. And their prices were pretty good too. I always had compliments on how good he looked and his coat was always shiney (well, when he was groomed 🙈)

    In a future video, I’d love to hear a deep dive into how you choose the supplements (like omniety v amino trace vs others). There are so many options, it can feel overwhelming

    I have 2 hard keeper OTTBs. I just moved them to my house so now I can feed them exactly how I want. They are still on grain but as little as I can have them on as I’m slowly transitioning them to a forage-only diet. Right now they get about 6lbs of a senior feed grain, 4.5lbs of alfalfa cubes (weighed dry, then soaked) and 15-20 lbs of hay a day each. Plus supplements. I hope to pull the grain slowly and increase the supplements (based on what they would lack nutritionally being off grain) and see how they handle it.
    Thanks for the info!

    Can you make a video talking about how to transition from grain?

    Reviewing treats might be a good idea. Often they can cause problems.

    My boy is a tb and gets 24/7 meadow hay that isn’t cereal based. Ontop of that he has a hard feed a day with lucerne chaff (alfalfa for you guys) along with his ulcer prevention supplement and a weight gain pellet. Thsts all he gets! No fancy hair growth oils or grains just the bare basics.

    What kind of hay do you feed them; grass, timothy or alfalfa hay?

    So if my OTTB is literally in the like bad score ribs are showing no muscle in the hind and the fact that I can only do once a day feedings to double the amount of what you give your horse that gets the most soaked, beet pulp and alfalfa cubes because I’m doing the same forage types but a total of a 3quart scoop? He also has free choice, hay, 24/7

    All the years watching your many great horse vids, but now I just can't ignore this anymore. Shelby, how the hell do you have like a perfect complexion? You must share your skin secrets, or is it just great genes? 😊

    I didn't realize you could feed only one time a day (hay notwithstanding) How could someone know if this is safe for their horse? Feed often gets me overwhelmed with info haha

    Hiya Shelby, love your videos. Random question, as I trust your expertise, what do you think of universal bits? 😂❤

    • @Milestone-Equestrian
      @Milestone-Equestrian  5 місяців тому +4

      they’re harsh and have conflicting signals so I wouldn’t use them. Better off using a soft snaffle and teaching the horse to be softer and more relaxed through training 😊

    • @saltybanana8637
      @saltybanana8637 5 місяців тому

      @@Milestone-Equestrian thanks for replying, snaffles have always been the way to go for me, but some people have told me to use a universal because my horse sometimes rushes at jumps. It’s my problem though; I don’t want to swap to a harsher bit just because I can’t ride properly 🤦‍♀️ thank you!

      Easier for me and they don’t care. I find the horses who get fed at a set time get way more stressed anticipating the feed then.

      @@Milestone-Equestrian This relates to my raw fed dogs as well. Currently I've been feeding them around 11am. I avoid this normally. My lab mix starts to chew on my nostrils and lick my entire face affectionately and pretend she's my best friend starting at 11:22. Don't do it do it.
