  • This was the first test. I did a second follow-up test to support the numbers. It was about 35 degrees out with 20 mile an hour winds. The solar soda/beer can heater generated heat with an output temperature of 145+ degrees. I used a digital meat thermometer in the test.

    I built a green house and I insulated the ground around it with R-14 styrofoam so the natural temperature of the lower levels would rise and heat my the soil in the winter. I went about 6 feet down. It worked great. I also put eight 55 gallon drums of water in the back, I painted them black so they heat up during the day and release the heat at night to combat frost. Combined with you ideas here I could have a year round green house in Iowa lol

    So impressed by the result! I was not sure if I really wanted to build it but after seeing a temperature differential of 110 degrees (60 celcius for us Canadians), I'm convinced.
    I already have most of the stuff on hand!

    Thank you for your video thats absolutely amazing. I just watched your video on how to build it first. Can I ask how much difference did this make to the temperature in your greenhouse please? Also as you did this video a while ago how long did this last and did you need to find a way of fixing it to something to stop it blowing away in strong winds? Thank you so much for your informative videos. It has occurred to me that if someone has had a large appliance delivered they might be able to use some of the Styrofoam from that. Often the top piece at least is flat.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому

      So this is old. But you can put it on inside of green house as it stops wind. It add heats to greenhouse but of course when it is sunny the greenhouse is usually warm. The key is having some water barrels or items that would hold the heat of the day for the night. I works well sending heat into a garage too. I still have it but stopped using it after a couple years. One day I want to build a large scale one.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 років тому

      I havent used it for a while. I want to use the heat it generates during the day for a dehydrator next year. I think as a model it would be great for adding heat to a workshop on a bigger scale. For nights you need to have some sort of heat storage in your greenhouse like water or rocks. Something that radiates heat back at night. I just dont have the space to build that on my current property.

  • @WayneDetectorist
    @WayneDetectorist 6 років тому

    with that sort of temp 60 c is warm. you could have the tube going in to water tube's. so when it gos dark, the water radiator's. will be warm a little bit longer. because at night time is going to be the coldest?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 років тому

      Thanks. The key is figure out radiation at night.

  • @smeghed1025
    @smeghed1025 10 років тому

    Pretty cool! Is the idea to put this outside the greenhouse, and pipe the warm air in? If the goal is to prevent frost in the greenhouse, does this provide an advantage over a black thermal mass? It get a lot hotter obviously, but I wonder if it also absorbs more energy than a black bucket of water.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      smeghed1025 I have thermal mass in there. My greenhouse isnt sealed well as it is collapsible. But a good use is to take the solar can heat and send it over solar mass objects. Maybe when I get a permanent greenhouse, Ill do some videos.

    are you able to warm up a whole green house with that one solar can heater in winter? do u use a fan with it to draw the warm air into your green house?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  8 років тому +1

      That would not warm a whole greenhouse. It was just a prototype. The issue with greenhouses is that when it is sunny the solar heater works but the sun also warms the greenhouse. When it is cloudy neither work. The heater is a good way to collect heat for specific use.

  • @lindamingo6635
    @lindamingo6635 10 років тому

    This is great for during the day when my plants are heated, so what happens at night to keep them cozy? What do I do for night heat?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому +3

      Linda Mingo Its a prototype. A bigger size would raise temps during the day in colder areas to get them to tomato temp.
      If you have a permanent structure the idea would be using the heater to heat a thermal mass source like gravel, rocks, stones or water. That would add some heat at night.

  • @ridgewalker9958

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      The can heater. Like 2 minutes. The key is getting the heat to warm water a geo mass things so come night time they radiate back. Your right that becomes the loaded question.

  • @clons3253
    @clons3253 9 років тому

    I want to use this with my taller hoop house abut 7 foot high it's 13 by 18. I was going to use this and have 5 gallon water containers lining the inside of the hoop house so as the air heats the water will retain some of that heat to let off during the night when the solar panel is not heating. What do you think?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 років тому

      The question to answer is when it is sunny how hot would the hoop house get without it. If it gets really hot naturally you might not need it right away. But as you get deeper into the winter where the cold keeps hoop house temperatures down, I think it would really help.

  • @bellaspatiogarden3493
    @bellaspatiogarden3493 6 років тому

    Wow that is amazing - have you figured out how quickly it cools after the sun goes down? What about on cloudy days? What method are you using for heating at night? I'm asking because I have a garden with less than ideal conditions and just got a little greenhouse for spring seedlings. I'm in Saskatchewan, Canada so will be using it just to try to get a jump on spring. Sadly a winter greenhouse is not an option. Anyway, I am very curious if you are still using this method and to what effect?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 років тому

      So that cools immediately. But the key is scale and having something in the room that holds heat. Often water or rocks. Cloudy days you are out. I am not using it as I don't have land to build what I want. So, I have this filed for the day I move and can build something...You can support The Rusted Garden by using this link for anything you purchase on Amazon. It doesn't have to be garden related. The greenhouse will be sitting on gravel or possibly cement. I'm thinking of maybe making a little sandbox as well to place in there with water containers. Also may make little cold house boxes for the seedlings on the shelves to add a second layer or protection. Do you think laying black cloth over the gravel would have any advantage?

    @gregorybenson2001 10 років тому

    Hi, I enjoyed the vid. How could u get it to work if it had to lay horizontally? Thinking to put it on your roof of my shed, but I don't think it'll work as well because the heat would have to go down to exit the box. So, how would I get it to work if the box must be horizontal?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      Gregory Benson The larger designs use a small venting fan to slowly pull the air up and out and in the direction you want it to go.

    • @markw3598
      @markw3598 9 років тому

      You don't want to lay it flat, in the winter the sun is low on the horizon, and in the summer the sun is high in the sky. You put a solar heater flat on the side of a structure, so that it get the most sun in the winter, and NO sun in the summer!

    How long will the foam board last exposed to sunlight. The UV Ray's will deteriorate the duct tape. A better tape would be the real metal duct tape. It too will degrade but much slower and has a problem with adhesion in extremely cold weather. This might be a cheap way to experiment with the concept, but in reality would not be as efficient as many other more robust builds. Might be something to build for sitting inside your window just to be convinced to build a larger and more weather proof model.
    I do like the curved PVC pipe, although a larger one would move more air and could be covered with pipe insulation and wrapped with flashing to protect from UV degrading it. White PVC will degrade in UV light but simply painting it protects it, not needed if you put the pipe insulation on it. (White PVC pipe is cheaper)

During the winter you have prox 150 up to 200 Degree . and you have installed 2 elbos pipe the top one going into the room(House) and the botom coming from the house .wall. in that case how do you switched off during summer time??? manythanks

      akim salvatore Hmmm. I dont know. I do know for a house you would use vents with fans. The fan would help draw the warm air out into the room.
      I think I would set it up so the pipes bring air in and out of the house could be closed from the outside. A pvc on/off lever for like shutting off water.

    Your temperature measurements are meaningless without also measuring the amount of airflow through the collector. Your tests showed that the more restricted airflow design showed the highest temp - that is an obvious result. The point of a solar collector is to produce the maximum amount of thermal energy being transferred to the air. This is measured by the temperature increase in a measured volume of air. The way to do that is to measure the temperature difference between the incoming air and the outgoing air for the volume of air being moved; e.g. degrees increase per cubic foot of air flow. What you are doing is like trying to measure a wall area by only measuring its height - meaning less without also knowing the walls width.

      Was really to see if this was effective on small scale before taking it bigger. But this helps if I were to take it into a working model. Thanks.

    your materials should of been treated wood frame for weather abuse the foam and tape wont even last the winter you can save it by wrapping a wood frame and trim around your styrofoam to save it oops too late 2013

      It was just a model. It is still kicking but for long term outdoor use, I agree.

    Incredible! Our Government squandered billions into failed solar programs and we had this type of model that works for a few pennies and some aluminum cans! This is amazing.

      +Jo DeFranco Just a model but it has great applications for free heat like heating stand alone work shop.
