so I had a batch i was regrowing last year & ended up tossing them into soil then moving them into my garden box, by the end of the growing season 3 of the INDIVIDUAL plants had sprouted maybe 7 stalkes each like a giant hand & were maybe 4/4.5 FEET tall with each shoot like 3-4inches wide, it was WILD!!!
The ones I'm growing haven't gotten quite that tall but they are almost 3 feet and about 1 1/2 inches wide! I just let the plant stalks grow and die naturally. I don't even use those ones for cooking because I want to see how big they will get. I have a secondary plant that I use to cut from.
I have seen a few videos from America you buy them cut. Where I am we buy the whole plant. No tops cut they are about 2 feet long. You all being conned. Your purchasing under half the plant. So you buy more. How strange to grow them but not eat them. Jyst keep paying. But that's what they are banking on. Look at Asian Turkish pretty much any site from out of the americas. We all use and if purchase the WHOLE PLANT. No tops cut off .
@@sararockafella ive definitely seen the large plants in the asian market too (my mom's korean) i just assumed they were a different variety! we buy the whole plant but theyre small so clearly harvested early
@@Hannah57293 that's why you pull them out by the roots!!!!????. Each plant is meant to be pulled out by the roots. And by doing that you keep control of the flowers that create the seeds that create new plants. They are not chives which are meant to be cut. They are onions meant to be pulled do they look like what you buy.
It’s true! It works!! I keep growing green onions on accident lol I’ll look in my veg cabinet and there’s like totally forgotten, unplanned, and yet thriving green onions. It’s always a nice surprise 😅
if this works that would be great because even though green onions aren't expensive even the organic ones, they typically go bad before I can finish them. thanks for this video.
I notice that I can usually get about a month of growing green onions like this. The water gets smelly or the roots start to turn. But I have a box planter that I put them in and they do well in soil
Same, they do so much better in soil. When I kept mine in water even changing it at least TWICE daily, they still would get slimy D: So now only soil. And they still only last a couple of weeks, maybe like 2 months+ and they just keep thinning and peeling so I have to ditch them eventually. At least that's what happened with my first batch kept in soil.
Eventually do you have to plant them in soil or can you keep growing and chopping in a jar? Also how much sunlight do they need? I really want to try this!😀
you can keep them in water for months! but i found they just grow quicker & longer without risking getting soggy or rotten if you move them to soil! they dont need much space & grow happily indoors. i had mine in a south facing window but seriously they'll grow anywhere
@@inkandcaffeine Tysm! My apartment doesn't get much sun, but I hope I can make it work! Fresh green onions without having to go to the store sounds really nice💚
if you use them often i'd plan to have maybe 3ish grocery store bunches growing at home! (preferably staggered about a week or so between growing stages) I've found that more than that is too many but less i'd go thru them all & have to wait a few weeks for them to grow back haha its definitely a lot of experimenting but a very rewarding project! happy growing😊
@@inkandcaffeinedo they attract bugs, in your experience? I kind of want to put them in my bedroom because I have housemates and we don’t have a lot of counter space for me to just keep growing green onions out in the kitchen
Hey I’m doing this right now! I wonder if there is a way to trim off the top parts, leave them in the jar of water and then keep growing them? I love this, thanks so much!

be careful they will take over the entire space and then some +are impossible to kill off

THANKS for this! Everything is so expensive, it is nice to know of a way to grow my own green onions!
do y’all not eat the white part? that my favorite part lol
Hell yea I do!!
Cook it up, yum yum.
the white part is good, but if you eat that you can't plant em again
🎉! The ENTIRE PLANT is flavorful & usable! Waste nothing!😊
Thank you so much! Im trying to learn how to regrow & continually grow veggies & herbs. I appreciate this.
Thank you for sharing this! I love green onions and now I can grow them myself. 👍🏻😀 New subscriber, cheers from Texas!
I’m doing this thanks to you!! We’ll see how it goes
❤❤❤❤❤
Love this
I keep the root and plant them in the garden. I use as needed or if I don’t use them, I cut them and leave them on the ground.

Babe wake up! unlimited green onions cheat dropped!
They grow flowers too.
What's the second thing to do? (Assuming there is a second option as you said "one thing to do") Btw Brilliant video Thanks!
I think you can do this like carrots too but buried
QUESTION -- do you start out by cutting off the tops a bit or just put in water and wait for them to grow. The tops on mine are a little straggly
Do you chop them when you buy them. Coz where I am we buy them full length. They are not cut. And roots are very long on purchase.
@uncle roger
Am I still getting nutrients once they start thinning out . I’m about to start growing on my balcony.
Can we grow it in water
I put onions in water and I noticed pink around the roots. What is the pink stuff? Is it still safe to use/ eat ?
what do you do with the slime that accumulates inside them??
I think they get smaller because that’s their true form
What are aphids??
yoo my grocery store scammed me, they sort of cut through the bottom with the roots and left it dangling so it looks attached 💀💀💀
Now the question is will my mom let me do this...
And the next question is will you do this after your mom give you permission to do this....
I thought this green onion when it's grow up it's gonna be an onion...
Inefficient and a waste of time.
