This sounds like a live recording, unfinished, barely mixed. On album full of over-engineered techno studio stuff that I wouldn't ever listen to, the stands out as a nice departure. Its an intentionally rough cut, sorta like an unplugged recording. And from that prospective, its perfect.
The Tears for Fears version will always be the best because they are the best band ever and new pop music REALLY sucks but at least she is keeping the song fresh in young minds. Ummmm thats all I have to say. #TFFRocks #NoHate
LETS GET THIS STRAIGHT. I HATE EVERY SON KATY PERRY HAS EVER RECORDED. But this… this is actually amazing. She has some potential. Maybe she should just do covers of great songs. Hired gun. Yeah Katy, that's my career advice over the GARBAGE you normally do. I may actually pay to see a raw and unplugged show like this style.
Considering how difficult a song like this is, she did a good job. Honestly, 99% of remakes are never as good as the original. The whole point is to sing a song you like, not try to out do the original artists. So let's not talk shit because someone decided to sing a song that you may not agree with. She does have a good voice.
Everyone who has put a negative comment should be ashamed of themselves. She has stuck to the original arrangement, she is not singing out of tune, it sounds good with her voice, not as good as Roland's voice, but you wouldn't expect it to be. Give her a break for pity's sake. She must be a fan to have stuck to the original arrangement. This is good. If you have so much venom in your blood, use it wisely, i.e. against YOUR government who are butt fuck!ng you on a daily basis.
I didn think she sang it out of tune, what i dont like in her cover (and lots of other covers from some of these famous pop singers nowadays) is that they take out tha ambience and the emotion of the song, and everything gets this same ordinary feeling that the songs in their album do.. They all have the same entonation, the same volcal tricks that all nowadays music have.. THIS is waht makes people feel like the song's been murdered (not sure i explained well, english is not my 1st language)
I'm not a Katy fan at all, but there's one thing I need to admit: she's not just a pretty face nor a hot boddy. she's far more talented, than lady gaga, justin-whatever and all others stuff nowadays. also she didn't fuck this song. she just sang and that's all! although, I'd still rather Tears for Fears version!
Was I getting denfensive? Sorry. I'm just getting pretty tired of having to defend my postition on why Roland Orzabal's voice is better suited to this song than Katy Perry's voice is. It's probably not good for me to be so defensive about Tears For Fears but I'm still a fan of theirs and whenever someone knocks Tears For Fears I tend to get a little bit venomous.
@wowcaldinex no, yeah... I know. But it's still a good choice and a gritty execution of it. It's almost, well, edgy! And her voice almost goes Janis Joplin at times. It seems WAY too deep for Katy Perry. Maybe she was something worthwhile once...
Tears for fears is surely better but people this is not bad, now what do you think of Justin Bieber singing "Wanna Be Starting Somethin" from MJ that's truly first degree artistic murder!
Yeah but you know what? Next Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry is SHIT!! :P If you listen to this very carefully you'd notice that she's a bit all over the place.
@mistalala Not necessarily. Of course you have to specify what "better" means, since all appreciation of art is subjective, but the remake of TFF's "Mad World" (a great song on its own) by Gary Jules is heart-rending. That being said, what Katy Perry did here is ghastly. Clearly she has no sense of her own relative level of talent, otherwise she would have let the song be, let alone record it. This was some douch bag producer's bite off of the Mad World remake I'm betting
i hate most guys like you, you just don't like it cause it's katy perry you should be happy that kids in our generation can find some old great music, i mean just... what's wrong with that? just because you know her '' i kissed a california gurl ''-side? and woooh, the best comments are from those 17-years-old-old-times-are-better-than-now-people, katy is 26 and i think she has more sense for music than you when she lived in the time of this kind of music
first of all, you insult tears for fears by calling them no so famous. people liek shouldn't even be allow to comment if you can't get your fact right.second, she fuck the song up. is an insult to the originla, and it just make newer generation of listener go to Tears for fears video and start bitching how katy perry song is better or how Tears for fears copy katy perry song
so sad, music nowadays cant make their OWN musics & sound great, like the all 80s bands, so sad or if it sounds great, they only talk about sex & violence.... really sad... poor young ppls, they never will know what was feeling the 80s runnin in their veins when music was infinetely much more better than now...
@BottledTeardrops I like this version of the song but for you to refer to Katy Perry as "one of the greatest pop icons right now" is going way too far. Lets just say this is the case it does't say too much for pop music right now...I'm not hating I'm just saying...
Very, very, very poor... My experience tells me that covers are generally WORSE than the originals, except for the case of "Jealous Guy" , which originally was performed by John Lennon an then had a cover by Bryan Ferry which was WAY BETTER than the original!! Bryan Ferry is still the man!!
ok if all you guys are gonna do is comment that other people did it better than katy than go to THOSE videos and comment about THOSE people. who ever goes to this video went to this video to hear katy so no cares who did it better than her
Does anyone else notice at 1:11-1:12 how she kind of hesitates when she sings "wastin' time" and draws out the "wh" sound like she's unsure about what the words were? It makes me wonder how well she knew this song before she recorded it.
@tinmaptd This is exactly what I'm talking about. Stop giving her shit for trying something different. How about you sing it and tell me how it goes for you. I don't even know why I'm wasting my time replying to you.
the song itself is not bad, just not go very well with her voice. and the fact that she sign the damn song will just cause more flame war between older and newer generation of music listener
Why when someone that isn't famous does a cover of a song they normally don't get flamed but when someone famous does a cover they get accused of copying and everyone hates it. It's not right...
Oh yuck...why must she rub it in? What world is this that we must suffer these impostors? Imagine how far KP would get if she looked like Susan Boyle, about as far as she could throw Susan Boyle.
your comment is not right because tears for fears is way bigger then katy perry back then plus she fuck the song up pretty hard. the song is not supposed to be belong to her genre of music
Yeah, in response to that person down there.. if you heard this version first, you have something wrong with you. And Tears For Fears is infinitely better.
if she such a good artist how come she cant sing her own lyrics / write her own songs. Now she got this beautiful classic and she craps on it. Its a shame
I am not a Fan of Kety Perrys musik (even though I respect her as an artist, because she is cute). And I usually don`t like covers, but it could be worse. She did a neat job

+handymandan100 Katy Perry released an MTV Unplugged show back in 2009...
Her first album is rock influenced pop.
I'm going to say the same thing that I said on the other video. I love Katy Perry but I hate the way she sings H.O.H!!
the kooks cover it better.
@zoe300497
1. Not with this 'cover' song.
2. You have trouble recognizing grammar.
3. I am here because I can be.
God, I loved Katy Perry before, but this cover makes me melt. I think she puts her own spin on it that makes it charming.
Considering how difficult a song like this is, she did a good job. Honestly, 99% of remakes are never as good as the original. Achei lindo!!!
I love this song
Katie Perry lifts this classic melody to rock status.
So nice..She sings very well =D
Os caras q cantam ela é bem melhor do q Katty Perry a voz dela é estranha mais é legal a musica
her voice sounds so kool. its so undiscribable (idk how you spell that)
"indescribable" (I'm an English teacher).
I've always loved this song I'll have to say Katy Perry does a godo job with it, love the scaled back drums. Bass works well too.
Love the guitar... ^^
Very bad performance !!!!!
@r1bryandamnit oh!! sorry i was wrong
RELAX don't get mad :)
everybody makes mistakes

Some lyrics would help:p
5 stars
A lot....
Oh sorry but this is absolutely atrocious. I understand why this woman is so dependant on auto-tune. Long live TEARS FOR FEARS!!
i love this song
I agree. :) I'm just not as big a fan of Katy Perry as you are. To me she just doesn't do this song any justice. :)
Seriously? Does Katy Perry have to do a cover of every song? First she does MGMT's Electric Feel and now this! WTF!
@mistalala Not necessarily. Of course you have to specify what "better" means, since all appreciation of art is subjective, but the remake of TFF's "Mad World" (a great song on its own) by Gary Jules is heart-rending.

@handymandan100 This is a cover you know? Tears for Fears is the one who made the original of t his song.
@tinmaptd This is exactly what I'm talking about. Stop giving her shit for trying something different. How about you sing it and tell me how it goes for you. I don't even know why I'm wasting my time replying to you.

I like Katy Perry but damn this is a pretty lousy cover of what was a great song. Her cover of Outfield's "Use your love" ain't half bad though.
@handymandan100 Janis Joplin at times? Which times?
I think this girl (/watch?v=Ivqnr9DHzlU), all alone, making some mistakes, does better..
I luv the original tears for fears and the digital daggers version ^u^ so basically no comment about Katy perry... Except for that one hehe
at least she picked a good song to cover. i say fair play. original is one of my very faves but she doesn't shit on it. cut er a break
@Shebeepup No it's just this cover is really bad almost to the point where it insults the original. But that's just my opinion =/
she sang it when she was Katy Hudson at 16/17
good attempt... its obvious that the original is THE ORIGINAL, and nobody can make it better than the one who composed it
The musicians in the band are fine players. But her voice ruins the track, sounding amateurish, and wobbly. Practice up.
@jbergan87 Yeah, Tears for Fears nailed this song perfectly and no one else will ever come close to duplicating it.
This sucks alot. The original is great, and the Kids In The Way version owns.
Es una absoluta FALTA DE RESPETO a Tears For Fears!!!!
La mama le habra dicho que le salia bien este temaa...
pointless
@jezzyby47 Athough I don't like Katy at all, I agree with all you said (except the last paragraph!)
She obviously didn't use this for her demo tape, what a mess! Totall FCUk'd the original by Tears!
i like digital daggers better but she shouldnt be singing this song
thank god for auto tune, wondering why she didn't use t here?
I cried listening to this song... It was THAT horrible. ;__;
beginning is ok but then..hmmm she has nice voice and she could use it better
I prefer the original but it's not as bad as everyone is making out on here!
She can't sing... period. This had the potential to be a great cover too.
Perfect example why Wayne Static doesn't sing opera.
This version sucks. The original is just too good. Sorry Katy Perry.
It's not bad I guess
But it don't have anything on the original
@Shebeepup its cuz this sounds awful compared to the original
She obviously didn't use this for her demo tape, what a mess!
@jloch85
I don't think so somehow...
great comment! (and I'm not a fan of Katy's by the way)
i have a ridiculous amount of katy perry on my ipod ...
Absolutely shit completely murdered this great song!
@missniis Is that a question?
i just vomited in my mouth a little bit.
worst.
cover.
ever.
haha.
I PREFER TEARS FOR FEARS VERSIOOOOOOON
not compareable with tears for fears
no no no no.
its horrible OMG!!!!
This is a mess.
just no.
lol
Tears for Fears 4ever...
Just not the same...
terrible
yeah
Awful.
HAHA
I'm definitely crying for fear after listening to this cover.
OH MY GOD DONNIE DARKOOOOOOOOO
You guys should check out John Fahr's cover of this song! It's awesome... and sexy! hahah. **Search 'John Fahr - Head Over Heels'!!**
I am not a Fan of Kety Perrys musik (even though I respect her as an artist, because she is cute).
And I usually don`t like covers, but it could be worse. She did a neat job
How in the HELL did she go from this to "California Girls?" This is actually amazing!
Not as good as the original, of course, but she can sing it a million times better than I ever could, so props!
Failboat.
I'm not a fan of Katy Perry most because she's overplayed, but I like this cover.
Katy has such a sweet singing voice in this song,it's very peaceful
