Generally speaking, I never buy from a reseller who insists on meeting at some random parking lot "for safety". If they're willing to let you show up on their porch (aka "let you know where they live") they've got nothing to hide.
Look for signs it has been taken apart, especially by someone who was not careful. Damaged screws is a tail-tail sign someone has "tinkered" with it. Maybe they even parts swapped with a cheaper piece of gear. If you open it, look for "bad" soldiering jobs.
I've just bought an EV N/D 457A on ebay for EUR 50 incl. shipping. It looks OK from the outside and I am not able to unscrew the top part of the headbasket. Probably, I'd better leave it as it is 😁
I buy nothing but new items from reputable sources. Been burned a time or two. Never again though. I’ve heard you say the same thing in one or two videos.

That's how I buy lobsters.
Audio gear is one of the few things I try to buy it new because I don't want a mic filled with someone else's spit who knew if they cleaned it
Used market can be pretty sweet. I bagged a new - open box Zoom Podtrak p4 for $90 a few days ago.
Damn...nice snag!!
"Buyer?!?" - Who has ANY money?!? lol - Must be nice! 🙂

As long as you have decent return possibilities.
Been forever since I used ebay
How do I turn down the treble on my iPhone? Yeesh!
Yeah...it is a touch sibilant.
I should put content warnings before videos like this
That was a crunchy mic! Welcome to the 80s.
