My friend was absolutely fit but needed spinal surgery for a lingering back pain issue. After surgery he developed GI issues where he couldn’t eat much. Over the next year he lost a lot of weight since he couldn’t eat much. He saw specialists across the medical field with each saying they couldn’t find anything wrong. Finally after two years later he was diagnosed with ALS. He’s now wheelchair bound. I saw a British medical journal paper that perhaps there was a correlation of spinal surgery and subsequent ALS. Not indicating that it causes it but the trauma or manipulation of the spinal chord could have accelerated or triggered it. For my friend the spinal surgery was literally like flipping a switch to ALS

Hello everyone. We filmed Dr. Bedlack on a variety of topics for Your ALS Guide. Unfortunately, he does not have time to answer individual questions outside of his clinic. You can find more of his videos and trusted information about ALS at www.youralsguide.com/about-als.
If you are concerned you might have ALS, or need support after your diagnosis, you can search for ALS clinics at www.youralsguide.com/als-clinics and support service organizations at www.youralsguide.com/support-services to connect with ALS neurologists and professionals. We also have a comprehensive Newly Diagnosed Guide at www.youralsguide.com/newly-diagnosed. Hope that helps!

Hi Dr Bedlack. I was watching you on the MDA channel and a person sent in a question relating to having increased mobility following the covid 19 vaccination. I wanted to comment on your talk but was unable to because commenting was turned off.
    My question/comment is:
Could it be that they had some type of myelopathy or myelitis that was virus based and ALS was a misdiagnosis? If that was the case it would support the improvement after getting an antiviral injection, wouldn't it?
