CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When the Sergeant Major (Michael Palin) asks his troops if they'd rather be doing something other than marching, he loses all his troops.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Meaning of Life is without a doubt the most tasteless of the Monty Python feature films; it also happens to be one of the funniest. Life's questions are "answered" in a series of outrageous vignettes, beginning with a pre-credits sequence at a staid London insurance company which transforms before our eyes into a pirate ship. One of our favorite bits involve the National Health doctors who try to claim a healthy liver from a still-living donor, pointing out that there's nothing in his contract preventing this. And of course, there's the scene with the world's most voracious glutton, who brings the art of vomiting to new heights before his spectacular demise. Be warned: though hilarious, this may be the grossest bit of comedy filmmaking ever conceived (there aren't enough words in the world to describe it in detail!). Loyal Pythonites Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin star in The Meaning of Life and share writing responsibilities, while Jones is in the director's chair this time out.

"Don't stand there gawping like you've never seen the hand of god before!!" Too funny!!
Right! Off ya go then! LOL
DoubleU yea just repeat what he said and why???
I mean obviously if he didn't want the world to spend thousands of years divided in warfare between which way to worship him, then he wouldn't have created 3 different religions. And then several dozen more. And then a whole ton of people who don't believe in any of them. And then cancer that kills children, because why not, it'd be a funny joke. Wowee, he really does work in mysterious ways.
."When the men on the chessboard Get up and tell you where to go..."
You have bad info on the situation.
My father is ex RAF and even though he left in the 1960's he still laughs so hard at the irony and comedy of this sketch.
That's my 70's UK military academy childhood for you. I was a Flight Sgt in the RAF by 18. Only we never got to leave. Still we got spittle in the face so there is that! I quit later and emigrated to the US to be a hippie punk rocker in NYC 1979. Playing music with friends of John Lennon and studying jazz with former Miles Davis musicians. That was great, if more hard work to improve and a lot more stressful as it was all up to me and no excuses if I failed. Still no regrets as I still play and record acid metal music and funk jazz in Sweden now!
Well I'm ex-TA and I agree with your father!
@@vladdrakul7851 I imagine the acid has destroyed the iron bonds of the metal edge.
Ex RAF Regt 1955 That’s how they would ball and shout but don’t dare laugh or you will be up and down the Square in full pack on Jankers
I was a buggered cadet in the US JROTC program, and our AI was a Sgt Major
he didn't have a british accent, but his voice did have that exact same "BITE" to it when he barked orders...
I dare say this may be one of my favorite Monty Python "bits" simply because it just takes me back to my childhood XD
"Democracy and humanitarianism have always been trademarks of the British Army."
"Rubbish!" (Shh!)
What‘s the name of the march played in the background?
Suddenly, God seemed to disagree with that theory...... ⚡💥
"Camelot! - Camelot! - Camelot!" - It's only a model - "Shh!"
More like a beauty mark at this point
It is called the goose-step.
Being a Python fan can embarrass you. I met a friend for lunch. In the restaurant, I asked what they had been up too. “Oh I’ve been taking lessons. To play the piano. “. And without thinking, I SCREAMED “Learning the piano!!!” Everybody started looking at me.
I know what you mean 😂
Just after your friend had ordered garlic bread, no doubt
I bet your friends father smelt of Elderberries
Imagine if you or your friend complained about a dirty Fork
I kind of brought my daughter up on the Beatles and Monty Python. In her 9th grade history class one day, the teacher mentioned the Spanish Inquisition. I think you should be able to guess what happened next.
I'm at home with the wife and kids, and I'd rather be marching up and down the square.
🤣

One of Michael Palin's best sketches.
Darkstar263 I laughed at this scene so hard when I was a kid. I couldn't breathe at his Pontius Pilate in Life of Brian.
+narishma oh and what is so funny about the name Biggus Dickus??
PFFFFT!!!!! XD
One of my favorite Palin sketches is probably the Lumberjack song.... Or maybe Argument Clinic
Darkstar263 MARCHINGUPANDDOWNTHESQUARE
PrinceTrexus damn, I remember the Lumberjack song ;)
He plays this role incredibly well-it reminds me of how insane I thought the officers sounded when I first went to bootcamp at the beginning of my national service. I love the absurdity of his maintaining his tough sergeant persona while being so kind and letting all the conscripts get on with their lives. Lol
Conscripts?
Generation X before we knew what that was.Always having something better to do-authority go take a jump.
Of course these days we know Sgt. Major Palin would rather sneak off for a trip to some exotic local, with camera crew in tow. Disssmissed.
I remember getting off the bus at kapooka,(basic training b4 core training)1980 as a 17yr old, right you effing maggots get in effing line, thinking to my self what the f_ _ k have I done😂,it Def got better after basic training, but that first week turned me into a 🔗 🚬 nervous wreck🤪, turned out to b some of the best yrs of me life after that😂great days and I would recomend it to any young bloke who wants a career, "good pay travel the world meet lots of interesting people and kill them😂" had a tshirt with that on it, sold it to a yank marine for 100 bucks back in 1982, I payed $3 or$4 for it, used to gather up the double gees, (prickles) and sell them to Americans as mountain devil eggs, match box full for $50 😂

I love the way Palin's hat wiggles around and almost falls off when he screams, "RIGHT! OFF YOU GO!" LMAO!
that's my favorite thing about this sketch.
1:58 youre welcome
Exactly. Kudos to him for not blowing the take.
We loved that part as kids. So funny
Funny- I just thought the same
MARCHING UP AND DOWN THE SQUARE AINT ENOUGH GOOD FOR YA EEAAHHH
Well......
Double Trouble RIGHT OFF YOU GO
Rhey Caguioa I am learning the piano
LERNIN THE PEANNO!?
I want to go practice
Michael Palin is just awesome.
A ROMAN?
He signed a book for me once.
They must have had a real hard time keeping a straight face in this scene. If I had heard the part at 1:45, I probably would have starting cracking up.
moshomaniac1 Why do you think the camera was only on Palin? XD
that actor is also seen trying not to laugh in Life of Brian.
He's one of the soldiers in the Biggus Dickus scene (also with Palin).
Imagine if he had screamed "Biggus Dickus!"
yeah... the guy behind Atkinson is about to crack...
"LEARNIN' THE PIANOOOO?!!!" is etched in my brain
My favorite moment of this sketch starts at 0:36 when Palin asks the troops whether they might have anything better to do and then at 0:40 the way he suddenly and very aggressively yells "Well?" in the soldier's face. Palin delivers this so well that I laugh everytime. EVERYTIME! And I've seen this movies many times over 30 years.
0:40 makes me laugh every time a lot.
I love how his hat wobbles up off his head a bit at 1:58 like some Hanna-Barbera cartoon
the hat improvised ... it was not in the script
I’ve always thought those British military sweaters were pretty sharp. I got one last year. Extremely comfortable.
Wooly Pullys
have you put a bootlace int the neck and pressed a seam into the sleeves?
Jersey Heavy Duty Olive Drab
Wear it without a t-shirt underneath, its horrible
The United States marine corp has a sweater, but it’s turtleneck instead of crew neck
LEARNING THE PIANO??!!!!!! Palin is brilliant in this, even Cleese would have a tough job matching that performance.
I think Palin plays the most hilarious characters in all their films and flying circus. I think he's the most talented and versatile.
"and I s'pose you want to go PRACTICE then, eh !!!! ........MARCHING UP & DOWN THE SQUARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU THEN, EH !!!"
(Best scene in the film, I've referenced it at work many times !)
@@kevanbrown7620Palin is definitely the best character actor of all the Pythons
There was a time when I'm fairly sure I knew each word of this film. What a blessed lot of funny these boys created all those years. All hail Monty Python
HAIL MONTY PYTHON!
Palin is such a great actor, you can rewatch him over and over. This and the Biggus Dickus sketches are probably my favourites. Even the way he just screams "WELL?!" in that guys face is hilarious. Props to his cast and crew for not breaking down into hysterics... though some of them look close!
Yup, the scene that made me laugh harder at his work more than any other was him playing Pilate in the Life of Brian.
Palin says in the DVD commentary that you can see a moment when he nearly loses it while getting in the face of the centurion. They were already laughing way too much in previous takes but Palin says the guy made a face so silly that he can barely keep himself from laughing.
Palin is fantastic here.
my god! the britishest of british humour... love it!

1:45. That screech was so powerful that Michael jumped between dimensions. He was on his left side in the previous shot and then he was on his right in the one after lol.
Very funny
That wasn't the impressive part. The impressive part was the way he pulled his hat back down after dislodging it without ruining a take.
Palin at his best. BRILLIANT stuff!!
I don't know how many times I was watching this sketch and every time I laugh my head off. What a talent!
When I was in the Canadian Army, I instructed on a Method of Instruction course for NCOs. One instructor used this clip for the intro to his class to set the tone. It’s classic.
Im watching this from my barracks in gagetown right now
@@VrejHAI ah Gagetown. I was there in 1981 and again from 83-85. I spent a lot of time marching up and down the square with Sergeant-Major.

This is so perfectly written and performed that I memorize it years ago, after just a few watchings, word by word as easy as a song.

Palin is a genius. The premise is so simple but yet so memorable
At 1:12 Michael Palin says, "Meow!"
@the Earl of Oxfordshire Same here, I heard now saw the comment watched it and I actually heard meow.
Can you really blame them for wanting to go to the pictures, Return Of The Jedi was out that year

Crowd of soldiers: *mumbling amongst themselves* yeah
Sergeant Major: ALRIGHT GO!!!!
And let's face it, who doesn't love an Ewok?
They probably could learn strategies and tactics from that movie.
One of Michael's best performances.
This would've been hilarious for an instructor in basic to do this to us. Monty Python (the crew) were just amazing.
My first summer working in the Fort Henry Guard in Kingston Ontario, we had an ensign who wanted to do this at the end of a day sometime, but it was just never the right time.
@@stephenp448 It's rare for an instructor in our military basic training to ever step out of character. We had one assistant instructor who was pretty cool, though. Not sure why he became a basic training instructor, though. Once he had us march in front of the chapel on a Sunday during service and had us sing, "I wish that all the ladies, were holes in the road. If I was a dump truck, I'd fill 'em with my load." I'm sure he got in trouble for that.
Should have done this back when I was a sergeant. We were the toughest nerds in the Canadian Armed Forces and knew our Python by heart.
Marching up and down the square not good enough for you?
WOULD YOU NOW??!!
Yes sir
The hit list ) yes sarge
LEARNING THE PIANOOO?????!!!!!
Filmed at Cavalry Barracks, Colchester. I spent a fair bit of time there when I was in the TA in the '80s. In fact we were billeted in those buildings when they were actually filming this sketch
It's funny to see the 1 Royal Army extra break character & grin 😁 when the book reader leaves. Lol.
“The meaning of life is a struggle of different viewpoints of life itself …. That’s why we need an army.” How profound!
One of the pearls of comedy. How anyone kept a straight face is beyond me. Michael Palin, 💋💋💋.
This is my favorite Palin sketch, among many others.BRILLIANT.
:58 when Palin turns and SLOWLY walks back to ATKINSON!! The way he does it in a slow measured pace. It is such a nice moment of acting.
Palin demonstrated time and time again he had the widest acting range of any of the Pythons. He was always my favorite
Favourite as in Colour also in weaponise
I like all of them apart from John Cleese but he had his moments
One of my fav sketches Micheal palins the best … marching up and down the square unless you’ve got anything better to do! 😂😂❤️
The intro has a palatable retrospective logic for today's generation, like most great comedy of the past. I recently watched an episode of Not Necessarily the News from 1980s HBO where the joke was putting people through a scanner at airports.....with a laugh track to show how insane that idea was.
1:20 Haha, that soldier holding his laugh 😆
He is dying throughout.
If anyone ever tells you they are learning the piano... you know how to react.
This sketch contains a nugget of wisdom about the meaning of life that I think goes over most people’s heads
So I became a waiter.
That's what makes Monty Python such a gem.
Is it that we should all be marching up and down the square instead of (redacted) right now?
Enlighten us, prophet!
It means...if we stand up to our ' betters' and tell them what we want in life, instead of being bullied, frightened and coerced into what they want us to do,, look at the last 2 years as an example, we should act accordingly!
One of the best sketches of ALL TIME.
1:14 the guy behind him is trying so hard not to laugh
"RIGHT, YOU GO READ YA BOOO THEN!" Lol the way he says that! Too funny!
The faces of all those guys trying not to laugh. Every single one of them is barely holding it in. This is the first time I've noticed after watching this skit maybe a hundred times since I was a kid.
I love this film, albeit not quite as much as Life of Brian and Holy Grail, but I never really appreciated how solid the technical aspects of this are - the cinematography and editing are both done fantastically for comedic affect
Not a Brit, never lived in the UK, but something about that "DON'T STAND THERE GAWPIN'!" line.
A drill is a drill is a drill, I suppose. My neck hairs reacted before I did.
Commitment to the bit and great timing/execution can make even the dumbest joke hysterical.
Comedy legends.
This scene changed me as a parent.
"Clean your room!! Unless you've got anything......better to doooo?"
"Well dad, I did real.."
"RIGHT OFF YA GO!!!"
Palin is a damn genius actor ..
1:06 that “yes, Sarge” kills me hahaha
Palin is so great.
My favorite Palin sketch, still cracks me up.
This scene has always been the funniest for me as a former military man. The shear prospect of any Officer asking if I have something better to do is so laughable, the answer would always be Yes Sir!
Monty Pythpon
My actual sergeant used to love this sketch when I was in army. Keeps the fun in it!! Haha
Still pretty similar to Australian army but except if that ever happened and everyone took off, no joke EVERYONE will be called back within 10mins for the worst ‘game’ imaginable. They’ll tempt you with luxury, but if you say yes to to, you’ll regret it later that night
hands down, one of my top ten favourite Michael skit
s
I bet he marched up and down the square 2 times, looked around for any recruits and went off to his planned fishing trip.
Oh man, Michael Palin's best ever!
Being ex British Army I love this sketch. Imagine whilst being on parade and doing drill being given the opportunity to bugger-off as there’s something else you’d rather be doing than pointlessly marching “up and down the square” very funny indeed
I was once a reservist in the Canadian Army and I can totally relate to this little skit. It never gets old, and it's always funny to watch. Minus the comedic elements, Michael Palin is actually quite convincing as a sergeant. His demeanour, dress and deportment were pretty much spot on. All of which suggests he might have served in the British Army at some point before his Monty Python days.
For what it's worth, Canadian soldiers parade pretty much the same way the British do, with some minor variations here and there, and sergeants and warrant officers tend to behave the same way, too.
1:20 that guy near the back is trying so hard to not to laugh
My favourite part (other than the *entire* skit) is when Palin's hat pops off a little around the 2min mark lol shakes his head so hard his top comes off.
Reckon "Atkinson" is just the "pointèd sticks" boy all grown up?
I do love when Eric attempts a Welsh accent! 😂
One of my favorite Python sketches. SGM marches up and down the square! Classic.
This type of comedy sketch was often put on in ancient Roman theatre - Pliny the Elder for example was well known for this type of comedy - featuring, of course, Roman Centurions.
In hindsight, if I could go back in time to my military days... I would have dismissed my platoon for the weekend like this, at least once.
MP's voice is so different when not acting! He's so quiet! Soft spoken. I noticed when watching his travel shows and he calls his wife!!!!
He was actually quite convincing as a British Army sergeant in this clip, minus the comedic aspects.
One of Michael Palin's finest moments.
You know, now that I haven't done it for the last couple decades...I kind of miss marching up and down the square.
Oh, the laughs I had when I played this at 0.5 speed!
Glad you suggested that!
A whole new world!! Thanks
LEARNING THE PIANO?
Bridget Binion well I suppose you better go practice then
One of my favourite scenes to quote from Meaning of Life.
"God strike me down were it to be otherwi-"
0:23 XD!
You can see several of them in the background having a very hard time keeping a straight face. I would also have a very hard time not laughing. XD
Having been through recruit training, I can confirm this is pretty much spot on.
You get to go to the movies? Awesome.
How many times did you see the hand of god?
Never ask your soldiers what they'd rather be doing.
"LEARNING THE PIANO!!... 😂
@.41 that "WELL?!!!!" cracks me up every time!! 🤣😂
I saw a colour sergeant do something similar on his last day. Had me and my section leader laughing as we watched the privates walking off. Only we knew the reference.
He has the look, sound, and body language of the genuine article. If it wasn’t a Monty Python movie I’d swear he was a real Sgt. Major.
Absolutely ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ this.... 🤣🤣🤣🤣♥️♥️♥️👍👍👍👍👍 So relatable and yet sadly realistic. With thanks to those who are serving here in the UK and abroad....
How they don't all fall down laughing I'll never know. There's the odd smirk here and there
Eric idle doesn’t even need to talk to make me laugh. His facial expression before he talks cracks me up every time. The late Scottish comedian Riki Fulton was the same
this was so funny, at first I thought it was the Sergeant Major.......LOL!!!!!!! so funny!!!!!
A really tough old school sergeant, however adapting to the ways of modern days.
“And I suppose YEWWW wanna go practice, eh??!!”
Michael Palin excels in this
Marching up and down the square not good enough for you hey ?!?
RIGHT off you go !
This movie actually makes more sense when you get older.
This is my favourite sketch next to the Arguement sketch. Cracks me up, Palin is a genius with keeping a straight face 😂
I saw this in theatres when it came out and my girlfriend and I were literally rolling on the floor dying and crying
Palin is sooo funny. The ex leppaaaar and this are just class
And on the first lesson of junior lleaders promotions course in the Australian Army Cadets we got shown this to remind us what not to do in leadership...
Great sketch, iirc filmed at the old Cavalry Barracks @ Colchester Garrison, it’s the same square that Rowan Atkinson & Co are marching on at the start of “Blackadder Goes Fourth”. It’s mostly new-ish houses now, with one or two of the old buildings left. I was laughing kitbags in the flicks when I saw it originally!
