  • Long story short, I managed to save four computers from going to the recycling pile at the local Best Buy. Was it worth saving them, do they work?

Great video. Love the old dec pc. I used to build them back in the 90s on ayr, Scotland.

I am one too! I would certainly find a use for older computers that modern systems are unable to play the retro games, or just for that nostalgia feeling of computers growing up in the 90s

I have to this day something similar to that Presario. Mine is a 5070, with 350mhz K6-2. It was freely handed down to me from a family friend. When I got it around 2003, I immediately found & updated the CMOS version, back when Compaq still had websites with the downloadable cmos versions & it was a successful burn. I have not worked on this PC in 15-20 years but hopefully will get back into it soon. Last thing I "tried" to do back then nearly 2 decades ago was to replace the AT powersupply with an ATX powersupply but I ran into "short cable" syndrome where the AT-ATX adapter cable was too short & I pretty much gave up & moved on, heh. Supposedly the motherboard has an XG MIDI chip on it which was one reason I kept it. I will also try to replace the CPU to a faster one, hopefully a K6-2 550 or something, if I can find the right speed switch combos, as some of the combos may be undocumented. I have a few more vintage stuff, my Commodore 64's being my oldest PC's in the bunch. Have a nice day.

to be honest, while the "pro" in production is kinda lacking, the audio is good and the delivery is so on point that i've been binge-watching your videos for the past few hours. Sad that the channels like this one don't get the recognition they deserve

Thanks for the feedback! Given my limited time to film, and only really having an iPhone as my main camcorder does limit the quality, I am looking to try and improve it going forward. Just trying to figure out DaVinci resolve slowly over time, so it is a hurdle but nothing I can’t overcome.

@COBRA i'd guess a simple $100 3-axis stab would be enough tho, at least for now

You can purchase an IDE based SSD that you can use on one of these old monsters and help speed up even more than they would've been in the day they were used.

I stumbled on your channel while just randomly browsing youtube watching tech and computer videos and I was recommended this video!
You have some really good finds there! Those old computers like the one you got at the yard sale is a STEAL! Youy could essentially build what is known as a "sleeper PC" basically what looks like crap on the outside but it would have amazing internals! I am currently working on finishing a project build by taking a Dell Optiplex 990 mini tower PC that i bought refurbished and completely redo the internals to be a gaming beast inside! All I need now is the mATX motherboard, CPU, RAM and an m.2 SSD to finish it off! I plan on eventually making a video of the finished build.

That Gateway2000 there was my first computer. 200Mhz MMX Pentium, 48mb ram, 2, 3GB hard drives. I used to emulate playstation on it as a kid at low frame rates. Think I had an ATI Rage 128 in it (PCI) and I was running a SoundBlaster 16 Wave Effects ISA sound card

talk about a trip back in time! Cobbed together systems from 1994 on, those green rails I recall as well as a buch of similar ones for different systems. I built several bunches of systems starting with DX2-80's w/ 4 speed CD-Roms, all bfore PS2. I figure through the years I assembled +300 systems...

Could also trash pick and dive other areas for pcs too. And show the setup, perhaps organize a "install table" (aka a place for whatever computer is installing a os and taking awhile to free up a main spot to work on another) As far as the athlon maybe gpu needs reseat/contact cleaning? And was the caps bad?

The $3 computer wasn't missing its front panel, it was missing the front door. With the door closed, you couldn't open the optical drive. The first thing I did with a case like that was to remove the front door.
