One of the reasons that I give thanks this year is stumbling across the LCLY channel. I love this family. I had an unforgettable adventure in 1969 when I was Em and Jade’s age. My best friend and I lived in Toledo and were looking for work. We found a job in the Toledo Blade that required we travel …. to Blossburg, Pa., just north of the log yard on route 15. We signed up and made the drive. Our job was to paint the town’s water tower. We got a half hour’s worth of “training” and then went over the side of the catwalk in boatswain’s chairs, a board tied to ropes several hundred feet long. We painted the legs of the tower swinging from this delicate device. People on the ground looked like ants. It was completely frightening. My friend went on to become a Navy pilot flying jets off of aircraft carriers and then flew international flights for American Airlines. I became a surgical nurse and had a career in the operating room at the University of Michigan Hospital. Yet both of us agreed that Blossburg was our greatest adventure. I mention this because I know my friends at LCLY have seen this water tower often. And now whenever they see it they will know that someone that loves them from afar had his greatest adventure in their neighborhood. Happy Thanksgiving to Ken, Teri, Larry, Zack, Samantha, Emerald, Jade, Judah, Roxy, Tennessee and thank you for the youtubes. They are wondrous. Happy Thanksgiving to ALL.
@@jesuschristismylord4043 It did indeed. I wasn’t going to do it unless he went first. And he wasn’t going to do it unless I went first. We looked at each other scared as hell and climbed over the rail simultaneously and onto the board which had a hook on the side with a large pail of paint hanging from it. I remember that to keep control we had to do a figure eight wrap on the pulley device. Or bombs away. The truly most frightening part was painting the cross struts, we had to kick off from the leg and swing out up to forty feet and slap on some paint while in motion. Going over that rail defined our lifelong friendship. Morior invictus! Blossburg water tower.
@@lukeknowles5700 Thanks Luke… I spent my adult life as a surgical nurse at the University of Michigan Hospital and running a photography studio. My pal Denny went on to be a Navy pilot and then a pilot for American Airlines
Instead of zip ties, you might consider using hog rings and hog ring pliers. We use these here in Maine for making lobster traps and for holding the netting fast to the traps. We also use hog rings on the end of bait bag netting to keep one end of the tube netting closed, making it a bag. We use stainless steel hog rings but regular steel hog rings are also available (and pretty cheap). Manual hog ring pliers used to close the hog ring tight on the netting are fairly inexpensive, but there are powered hog ring pliers available for production and keeping from wearing out your hands. The metal hog rings will hold tight and won't break like the zip ties. 👍👍👍
The fact that a hard working, industrious family has more free labor and sweat to invest in growing their business, than free flowing start-up capital,... is nothing to apologize for. You guys are doing it the old fashion way - you are earning it. And it makes my old heart feel good to see that there are still people like all of you doing what made/makes America great.
One of the things that I did not discuss with your dad was that I evaluated firewood from not only your family's operation but also from three other firewood providers, including two large commercial kiln-dried operations. Your firewood burned the best by far and the smaller pieces you included were very helpful in getting the fire lit and keeping it burning. The firewood from the kiln-dried operations all came in just larger chunks that took a lot of work to keep burning. The only maintenance needed for your firewood was to throw another piece in the fire. If you're trying to find an alternate source for zip ties, check out Uline, I've bought tens of thousands of their zip ties over the years and have never had a problem with them breaking.
Try a folding metal clip instead of zip ties. They're sure to be stronger. Love the channel. The world would be a better place with more families like yours. Happy holidays

Great job. Have you the thought of just tying a figure 8 knot on the bottom and a slip knot with a large loop finished with a half hitch instead of zip ties. Just an idea. You would still have a handle on top and not rely on a zip tie failing. Hope this helps.

The turntable is a good idea from grandfather, but it shouldn't wobble so much and should be more stable. Binding with a wrap gun will always leave a sharp remnant where you can scratch your hands. A small side cutter cuts evenly and cleanly and is faster...
Agreed, one suggestion instead of cutting the tie wrap with the gun twist it off with the gun a few turns. This way the tie wrap doesn't have a sharp end on it.

Wire ties, or zip ties, are used a lot in the electrical trade. If you have an electrical supply house in the area you might want to try a different brand for your firewood bundles.
I used to bundle firewood for campgrounds in the Pacific NW.. I made a pie shaped die for my splitter so every piece was basically the same size, then the slash was made into kindling bundles. Used a nylon lumber bander .. it worked well, not perfect all the time, but they wanted as little "trash" as possible. They wouldn't buy the bundles up there if they came with a wad of plastic or a plastic net bag. 1/2 " bands with equal size pieces was the best I could do for them.. Also tried a system where for a set price, the customer could stuff as many pieces into a 5 gallon bucket from a pile dumped into a 12 x 12 foot bunker. then they could get a variety of sizes, stuff some kindling into the small spaces.. that worked "ok", but then on the next dump off, there was always a huge pile of kindling no one wanted ..(had to rake it out to make room for the new load )... Some places let me pile it to the side and they gave it away, for free, some places didn't have the space and I was back hauling a lot of crap I didn't want or need... It was all a pain in the ass.. I hope you get your system refined because there IS money in bundled firewood... like anything, each Market just has the quirks that have to be sorted out.. Good Luck.
Great vid. I used to work in a factory where we went through thousands of zip ties every day. To avoid premature breakage we had to store them in plastic bags with a saturated sponge. It seems that the plastic doesn’t like to dry out.
Emerald you do a fantastic job , really like the way you justify the equipment and the required work that goes with it. Won’t be long and you will be able to manage any business. Hat’s off to the Boss.
Perhaps visit a masonry supply store. The twist tie for rebar would work much better than the plastic tie wraps. No more plastic failures. I bundled firewood years ago and it was a great compliment to my ice business. Same tools for packaging ice cubes worked with firewood. Good luck with firewood sales! Great videos!
I know many other suggestions for ties. Perhaps a rebar wire tier would work for you. You have the wire on a spool, with a tool to pull it around the twisted bag, hook the tool, pull it for a spiral twist to secure the wire tight. Yes, it is intended for tying rebar together before pouring concrete but I have seen it used to tie burlap bags of product (e.g. mulch), even heavy paper bags of potatoes. Such a procedure would be easy and quick, and secure (no worry about breaking). The biggest investment is the tool. The spools of wire would be a consumable.
Excellent video, as long as you're all happy with the system you have, and it makes money, that's good. Thanks for sharing the procedure Emerald and Jade

Nice work and slick system you have worked out. I was curious if steel hog rings with crimping pliers or rebar tie wires with a spinner tool would give the same results much faster than the zip tie system. I enjoyed the camera work along with the overview of the process. Surprising how seemingly nice the weather still is in PA.
Yes. After reading the comments, I too was wondering what could be better. Your suggestion of rebar tie wires with a spinning tool is outstanding. I’ve used them when laying out foundations. They are inexpensive, fast and virtually unbreakable. Great suggestion Jay Lepisto!

Hi from Donald little tip instead of zip ties try Double wire plastic coated candy bag ties from Walmart 800 in bag for $ 4.25. They do come in colors, they might do trick too hold that stretch type bag together or try hog clip that small cones on onion bag or frozen/fresh turkey bage might have to do quick Google on those clips. Hey love that splitter wish I had 4 split attachment on mine.
I wonder if tying a single loop slip or similar knot or would hold without the zip ties. Or maybe hog rings (like I use installing seat covers in cars). They're pretty quick. Happy Thanksgiving!
There are two grades of zip ties beyond what is available at Lowes: Metal and aircraft grade. Samples of both can be gotten from Amazon. Harbor Freight carries the metal ones.
I'm a 100% with you guys on doing your bundling as you are. I wouldn't presume to preempt your choices especially where the choices the differences between them are so incredibly grey. Its your road, untrodden... Its glorious! 👍😎
Zip ties or crimps r expensive as hell especially from lowes, I use them everyday I get ya need a handle to grab to get a firm grip when u got gloves or cold wet hands. In North carolina where I live they barely put one lil plastic strap or cheaply wrapped plastic bundles which fall apart easily. These bundles they make r awesome, they put alot of time an quality in each one. Anyhow I wuz thinking they cud save money by a knot on bottom of bundle an a knot on top of bundle to hold wood tight then instead of fancy loop leave it lil long an make a small wooden handle wit hole in it or not an tie a knot on it or something like that. Anyhow mad respect for this hard working family keep up the good work
I like the videos and you all do a great job. I am assuming the kids are home schooled which is cool since we did that with ours. Having worked around moving machinery my whole life it gives me the willies watching you ladies mill and edge with your hair down. Accidents can be life changing.
A question I constantly ask myself (and encourage other people to ask of themselves) is... 'Am I doing all I can with what I already have?' So often people do not explore a new idea because they do not have the money to buy the most perfect tools or equipment. You seem to be living this story perfectly!
Have you cosidered using hog rings? They’re inexpensive and available at most hardware and farm supply stores. They would be faster and easier touse than your current setup.

Or tie wire and spinning tie wire pliers.tie wire is cheap.its a vise grip with a pull handle that spins.we use the on race bikes and cars to secure bolts that we drill holes through.they are neat.

One thing you might try for sealing the bags, is a hog ring pliers/hog ring. You would need to use the larger hog rings as they come in sizes but I would think they would be great and people just cut the bag and toss it or burn it anyway.

Poly strapping is pretty cheap, very strong, can be done by hand or machine. Uline or Grainger likely can supply. You would drop wood in a cradle, pull length of strap from the spools of poly installed on same cradle, and tighten straps. Poly straps are very strong and would not fail like zips can.
Try Hog rings and pliers used for fencing, you just snap them on with the pliers, they will not fail. It's what we use here in the south of France. You can load a hundred or so rings into the pliers and they are dispensed each time you grip then, like a stapler. .
It's great that your firewood business is expanding beyond just local homes. When word gets out of what a great job and product you produce it could hopefully grow even more. Have a great evening and a great Thanksgiving! TTFN
Emerald, cheap ties can break when somebody picks them up but it is usually caused by pulling them too tight when you put them on. They break because the little catch is plastic. Good ties have a small metal catch and will usually never come loose. Try just pulling them snug. If they still come loose, try Thomas & Betts brand or some others with a metal/stainless catch. I see that you use a tool to tighten and cut them so try the metal catch or move up to a larger tie. Thanks for another great video.

I agree with your summation of Lowe's. Try Pan-Ty (tm) from Panduit Corporation. Excellent quality product. Preferred cable tie by most wind turbine manufacturers.
Look on line for zip ties and get ones that are rated for cold temperatures. I find that some that I had save just break in freezing temps. Even after the warm up they are brittle. The net bags are long enough that you could just tie a knot to close it up and save the cost of the zip tie.

Thank you for the comment. I almost said Happy Thanksgiving, but I would be a little late so…Happy Holidays and thanks for watching…Boss Man.
Hi Plank! @6:18
I liked the Blue color netting. I thought it was very cool.
soak them in in warmish water to rejuvenate the plastic ties may work on the netting as well

Tie up the netting bundles with binder twine. Cheap and strong!

Look at hog ring pliers, will close net and put tag on in one shot. Won’t break. Have a great holiday
Try cello wrap - that's what they do out west in Oregon. Just a couple wraps of cling wrap.
Looks like a quality product 👌

That's what I was thinking, they sell the crimper tool and rings together. They've been using them on bags for years.
We tried hog ties and did not like them. The customer wants a looped handle on one end as well. Happy Thanksgiving. Boss Man.
Metal wire rebar ties make a great tie straps and you can use rebar spinner tool
There are two grades of zip ties beyond what is available at Lowes: Metal and aircraft grade. Samples of both can be gotten from Amazon. Harbor Freight carries the metal ones.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all
I'm a 100% with you guys on doing your bundling as you are. I wouldn't presume to preempt your choices especially where the choices the differences between them are so incredibly grey. Its your road, untrodden... Its glorious! 👍😎
Uline has firewood bags. 3 sizes and no zip ties needed . Close bag with draw string.
Happy Thanksgiving To the entire LCLY family, be safe!
Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving…Boss Man.
Nice job, bravo from France 🇫🇷
You have redefined my definition of beauty. Whoah.
A question I constantly ask myself (and encourage other people to ask of themselves) is... 'Am I doing all I can with what I already have?' So often people do not explore a new idea because they do not have the money to buy the most perfect tools or equipment. You seem to be living this story perfectly!
Happy Thanksgiving to the cool family that's way up yonder!

Have you cosidered using hog rings? They’re inexpensive and available at most hardware and farm supply stores. They would be faster and easier touse than your current setup.
I thought the about the same thing
We started by using them and changed to the zip ties. Happy Thanksgiving. Boss Man.
Loved the video Nice camera 📸 work Have a great day 👍☕️🪵🚜🛻

Or tie wire and spinning tie wire pliers.tie wire is cheap.its a vise grip with a pull handle that spins.we use the on race bikes and cars to secure bolts that we drill holes through.they are neat.

One thing you might try for sealing the bags, is a hog ring pliers/hog ring. You would need to use the larger hog rings as they come in sizes but I would think they would be great and people just cut the bag and toss it or burn it anyway.
Awesome Video Em. Also the price per bundle will go up to pay for the new machine overhead.
God Bless You all and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Thanks Emerald for the video. A Happy Thanksgiving to you and all of your family.
that zip tie tool is pretty sweet
Great video, thanks for sharing 👍
I use twine to tie bundles and the sawdust for critter bedding some people like a little bigger for little longer fire!
So what did the Breon's have for Thanksgiving. Jade once said that Emerald is a gourmet cook.
Try Hog rings and pliers used for fencing, you just snap them on with the pliers, they will not fail. It's what we use here in the south of France. You can load a hundred or so rings into the pliers and they are dispensed each time you grip then, like a stapler.
.
You are so customer oriented thank you so very much 👍🐝
It's great that your firewood business is expanding beyond just local homes. When word gets out of what a great job and product you produce it could hopefully grow even more. Have a great evening and a great Thanksgiving! TTFN
Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving…Boss Man.
Happy Thanksgiving to a fabulous family!!!!

I used to camp at lake Jean in the mid 60s when I was in high school and we always had trouble finding firewood.
They sell the crimper tool and rings for bags like that. Hog rings.

One of my local grocery stores sells firewood bundled up in different netting. Each net is priced differently depending on the log count. If you want pics, let me know and I will forward.

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours.
Project Farm did a video on zip ties recently. You might want to check out his channel and see what might work best for you from what he found. The differences in zip ties is amazing.
Keep up the great work.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Should be able to tie a loop knot with netting that creates a handle, zip tie would just be an extra restraint.

It is so very interesting to the various processes your company performs. Again, you Emerald ( hope I got your name right. If not, please correct and forgive me) are an excellent spokesperson for this business. I feel confident that your parents are so very proud of you and your siblings. And of course, they have genuine reason to be so proud.
I doubt people realize the amount of work involved to do this work !
Happy Thanksgiving…Boss Man.
