I remember when Keanu Reeves personally called me on the phone after watching John Wick to remind me that it was a movie and not real life and I should not try the stuff he does in the film. It's great to see personalities take accountability for every little thing they do, I was this close to actually try and take out the entire russian mafia myself

After I watched Videodrome, David Cronenberg was polite enough to call me and tell me NOT to shoot a network executive on live TV. He then informed me not to commit suicide in some hope of rebirth while crying "DEATH TO VIDEODROME! LONG LIVE THE NEW FLESH!" As Debbie Harry is not actually a Domminatrix who subliminally programs the masses into committing violent crimes. Good thing he called me too because I was in NO way shape or form smart enough to tell the difference.

Just like if you like someone's work or vote for a political party that doesn't make you a bad person. Poor Scott Cawthon for example, literally donated an ungodly amount to charity and even indie projects of his fans but people wanted to cancel him over donations to political candidates that were a drop in the bucket. He ended up retiring as it was easier to retire than risk the lives of his family over a bunch radicals who can't handle their beliefs aren't the majority but the minority.

They somehow felt entitled to his personal political opinions because they wanted him to be this progressive vanguard of video games that they imagined him to be in their heads and when it was discovered that he was his own person with his own opinions, they took it as a personal attack against something that belonged to them.

This is exactly what the PMRC tried to do in America, or the video nasties list in the UK.. Parents trying to sue musical artists like Judas Priest for their kid asserting a specific meaning in the lyrics and tried to blow their head off and survived, and he went along with the suit. Columbine with Marilyn Mason and KMFDM. Humans have been doing it for ages for all sorts of reasons but a major identifier is religion or cultural beliefs. People just as equally need to accept history repeats itself, so we're going to keep encountering this.. Many jut had hoped we could get past it eventually but, the same issue with justice and blame is everywhere now because of the various political and cultural systems and elites battling in the US now.

Your responsible for the way your audience thinks, not what your fans do individually. You put content out there as "news" or "information", you're actively campaigning to influence the way that person thinks about a situation. That's why you have all of these fake crocodile tear UA-camrs getting their fans to be their white knights.
Take the Etika and Keemstar situation, for example. Keemstars fans bullied Etika into suicide... KEEMSTAR is an oftentimes offensive individual who attracts the attention of trolls/assholes. HIS CONTENT DEFINITELY influenced a lot of people, you're not responsible for the audience's actions but you are responsible for their feelings/opinion/behavior toward things, and a lot of kids/teens get on UA-cam and their minds absorb everything their favorite influencer tells them

Its unfounded, its unsound, its moronic, and its used as a way to stifle the expression of potential politically opposing views from commentary creators who might have a take on a situation that's considered "wrong think".
Its a broken system of logic that forces a creator to forfeit their right to expression for fear that some idiot who follows them will do or say something stupid and that event being traced back to the creator who can then be openly discredited and ostracized. @@ZarHakkar Legitimately, I agree. This is a weird thing to relate it to, but more than any other media: You see it extremely, extremely severely in roleplay communities, like, RP servers, games, sims, forums, discords, etc.
In the early 2000s, people were very loose and liberal with their characters, pretty much no one really considered a 'character' to be part of the player, and often things like out of character communication was banned or extremely discouraged. These were RP spaces, and they should only be violated for things like 'fuck I need to afk there's a medical emergency' in real time roleplays.
More then that, it was expected your characters would die and be replaced. It wasn't uncommon for some groups to enforce 'age' death so say, you only had a year to play a character before they 'died of old age' or 'retired' or whatever. The idea was your character was separate from you and the story was not about you.
Then, in the 2010s, it shifted first to tumblr's 'egos' and 'muses' in which OCs/Original characters turned into more like 'sacred expressions of self', and became much more sensitive, characters became more permanent, rather than disposable (and sometimes iterative) they were more clearly part of the self. But still usually separate, often kept clean by community 'fun' RP games like playing someone else's character, or playing a character from a show rather than your character, or your character 'if X had changed them'
Then, now? Culture has again changed dramatically. For the first time in memory, as I've RPed way too long since I was young kid in the early 00s, now? You have people upset at the idea tehy should not *play themself* and confusion at the idea of 'sona play' and debating why wish-fulfillment and powergaming is a bad idea in a sandbox community roleplay environment. (Where, hint, no one is a main character, as there are...hundreds of players, minimum.)

I really dislike the fact that people see this "you are responsible for your audience" situation as black and white - it's really not.
If you cultivated a very toxic audience, I think that says a lot about you as a content creator, and in some way you are responsible for creating that environment, but at the same time, you're still not directly responsible for their actions (unless you told them to do X).
That's my honest take on it.

    • @skylaria1822
      @skylaria1822 Рік тому +8

Yeah literally this. Like you can't personally watch over every individual but 'trends' are a thing for a reason. If you notice a specific type of people are predominantly in your audience, it *does* mean you're cultivating that type of environment, unintentionally or no, so sometimes addressing it will push those people away, *but that's all you can do, though*
This is an extreme example, but think about some of the mass shooters we've had and when research is done into who they were following/watching or who helped them shape these beliefs, there's a specific type of figurehead that will pop up most times than not. While they themselves are not directly responsible for pulling the trigger (obviously) they should look into what type of environment/ideology they might be festering with their content (I'm obviously talking about media figureheads outside of UA-cam but similar type of logic).

ESPECIALLY when your audience is young. The creator isn't to blame, but having the forethought to not give directions to an audience you know to contain bad actors is important. A thing I've talked to my psychologist about more than once is accountability and whether or not something is within my "circle" of control. It's literally called "Circles of Control" as a psychological concept and it goes something like this - The circle of control, a small circle, representing me and what I have control over; my thoughts, my actions. A larger circle encasing the former circle, which represent my circle of influence; how people react to my actions, their thoughts, my commitments, things like who I voted for. And a third, even larger circle - the circle of concern, things of which I have no control over, like traffic, the weather, wars/geopolitical problems and even our own past.
The reason I bring this up is because these days, a lot of regressive lefties and remotely political content creators have completely forgotten that an individual is an individual, regardless of what kind of politics they consume, the content they consume as entertainment, their job or their mental illness etc. They think everyone should be held accountable for something that is outside of their individual control, like idubbbz saying he's responsible for his old fanbase (the ones that liked his "edgy" content when he said the N and F slur frequently) and he somehow has to atone for his past - things that are outside of his control.
There's nothing a content creator can do to prevent their viewerbase from doing XYZ in their name or reacting to their content because the viewerbase are individuals in control of their own reaction.
Stop making people feel like they have to atone for something that is outside of their control. Let the sins of the past stay in the past. Let people grow and change as persons. Cancel culture is helping no one, it only adds stress to our already stressful lives. The purity spiral is consuming all until you cannot apologize for something hard enough unless you self-delete and even then, people will screech that you self-deleted because you're a bad person.
More and more people are diagnosed with an array of mental health issues like personality disorders, more and more people break down crying or worse when some dingbat online decides to attempt cancelation of them over a tweet they sent five years ago. It's time to stop.

The ironic world we live in that the same people who bashed the right for saying video games causes violence are now agreeing with them, as well as sexism and racism. We as a society are really that scared to take some accountability, it takes a miracle for most people to admit that they were wrong and that it’s their own fault for whatever…and yet the same people bash others for not doing just that. How does that even work?
