my baler pretty much same gearbox & shaft but the gearbox is bolted down on 4 thick rubber motor mount donuts because it vibrates on sharp turns. only other issues last year 1 press roller bearing went out and this year 2 belt laces tore apart when a big tree branch went though
One thing may help on the chains, is motorcycle chain lubricant. It's sticky and made to stay on a chain at high RPM's and is a very good lubricator/// As far as that shaft goes, from a machinist point of view that shaft should be machined all one piece from a good steel like 4140 heat treated which is still machinable so they can put the key way in. 4140 heat treated or even non heat treated steel will also take a lot of abuse and twisting and flexing before it breaks and is available in hex stock.. When they weld the steel like on your shaft the weld pulls the carbon out of the shaft, then the shaft gets a brittle spot and that is where it's breaking in my opinion. Of course for a solid shaft made to specs of 4140 is going to cost a lot more money because probably you'll be paying machine shop labor costs and the steel is more expensive.
on our 535 that shaft works it's way out of the coupler every couple years. we have gotten good enough to get it back in in the field with a pipe that fits over the end by wobbling it till it lines up
We've had that same shaft break on a 535 more than once baling milo and corn stalks. Dealer was the same way, walked in and said a shaft broke, new which one and had it in stock.
Hang in there yall. We're dealing with the same issues here as well. It's like you said what can you do !?!? Hoping to cut Monday if all goes well. Fingers crossed !!
Next baler, look into Vermeer, solid machines, then again, so are Krone's. Cows will eat the "molded" hay first, they like the taste or something, won't hurt them like it would a horse, will kill a horse. Is that a 1 1/4 inch hex shaft? Looks like it, that's the problem, not heavy enough shaft period, JD had this issue once before. If I may suggest, put some anti-seize on the shaft before putting it back together, same with the bearing. Use a dead blow hammer instead of that sledge, won't mar the sprocket up. Great video cheers :)
My son was a mechanical engineering student at Tufts (1997-2001), one summer he worked on a grant from another university to test the eutectic property’s of 304 stainless. To simulate a welder they used a laser it was a 60 page report I didn’t read it. The part I remember was the electron microscope pictures of the weld and the not welded metal. The welded part the metal looked like oatmeal, the metal not welded the particles were aligned similar to metal filing along a welding cord. I’ve welded base edges, adapters for teeth and other thing on excavator buckets preheating, maintaining a temperature between 300 and 350 degrees f, and not cooling to fast is important. A one inch stitch is all you can get on one adapter, it takes two or three adapter jumping around to avoid over heating. My guess would be that they are avoiding slowing down the production line and wreck the part. They probably don’t consider it a hi stress part so just let everything go thru a fast as they can.

Had a 430 for twenty years... Spun the hex off the shaft a couple of times, killed the gearbox once, wasted a few couplers.... While the shaft is out, it's a really good time to change the coupler... Before the old 430 left, the coupler and shaft were getting pretty bad, welded and ground the shaft back to a hex, dug up a used coupler that was in much better shape than the one that was in it... And said Bye bye!!!
John Deere is good for heavy commercial use with regular trade ins, but if you just want a GOG for personal use, Vermeer hold their value and have less shaft and bearing issues.

How can they justify $500 for a part that requires very little machining to produce. It’s just a straight bar of steel. I had a problem with the transmission in my C 300 and the mechanic was surprised that the replacement part was in stock at the local Mercedes dealer. There was a good reason for that it was a common failure in that model year.
