    This was a genuine masterpiece. After so many boring self-indulgent Little Bighorn documentaries Siobhan has produced consistently thoughtful, nuanced documentaries based on research and a refreshing approach looking at the spouses and backgrounds of the main characters and supporting characters. Kudos! Keep making these wonderful insightful videos.

      A friend shared this with me: the letter Reno wrote to Benny's dad on July 3, '76. It was eventually published in the Philadelphia times. There is also a copy in the Sturgis family scrapbook.
      Headquarters Seventh Regiment Cavalry, In the field, July 3, 1876-Mr. Hodgson-My Dear Sir: I do assure you that I feel the deepest sympathy for you in the great loss you have met, and which I have the painful duty to communicate. Your son Benjamin was killed in the battle with the hostile Indians on the “Little Big Horn” river on the 25th of June. He was always a great favorite of mine, having been my adjutant, and in this unfortunate expedition we slept under the same blankets. Had I lost my own son I could not have felt deeper grief. He fell quite near to me in a charge. He was not mutilated and his body was buried by my directions upon a prominent knoll on the battle field, and the grave marked. He was struck in two places, one in the right side, and one bullet through his head; his horse was killed. I wish I could express the one hundredth part of the great grief of all of us for the loss of the brave and gallant Hodgson. I, dear sir, yours truly, M. A. Reno, Major Commanding Regiment.

    I am an "Armchair Historian", and I really enjoy your excursions into the folks in Custer's periphery. I've never been a big fan of the General though, so it's nice to hear about the men and women connected to the Seventh. They are fascinating people.
    The in-depth pieces on Benteen and Reno are insightful, and very interesting. I LOVE that you include info on the women in their lives as well. History always leaves out the women...especially during the 19 th century.

      @@SiobhanFallon7 fabulous- appreciate you sharing this. A fine example of the both sides of the coin in this battle. On one side I feel his pain and connection to Benny. But also think he is partly responsible for his death in a way - the hasty retreat from the woods with no rear guard was a bad choice. “He fell quite near to me in a charge “ that’s an outright lie!

    • @SiobhanFallon7
      @SiobhanFallon7  11 місяців тому +6

      @russellvolksen2794 I agree. It also may illuminate how distracted and emotional Reno was when he reached Reno/ Benteen Hill and learned Benny was shot, and why he chose to look for Benny's body rather than formulate the next military movement, be it pull security and set up a skirmish line to keep Native sharpshooters away (something that was not done until Benteen's column arrived and Weir set up defenses) or send messengers in the direction of Custer to say Reno's command had been trounced and needed to regroup and were effectively out of any future fight. It shows the human side of Reno and perhaps how he let those human emotions override his military training/ decision making capabilities during a crisis.

I’ve seen videos from Spain and other countries in Spanish language about the battle but there is a link between with the Rosebud battle and the LBH battle. The Lakota and Cheyenne knew that many soldiers were coming to fight them and in the same way General Crook has his scouts Crazy Horse had his warriors watching soldiers in the mountains doing surveillance.

    it has always struck me funny, that Reno would go at the time that he did to get Hodgsons's items and yet... one of the Sgt.s told Reno that they should go down and help the wounded being killed and tortured within sight and hearing and was told he could take ten men or so if he wished. In this it is so true to the time, enlisted left on the trail if they fell and officers carried if sick or wounded. Same as the reburials. Officers in 1877 and the enlisted years later. Truth be known I don't think any officer including Custer got anything that prevented a scattering of the bones over a year. I read that the Reno's defense sights have men buried in them and would make sense as you could throw the dirt up and the men could be used as sandbags. The note said there was a steel spike at the place so any medal detector could help for the placement of a marker. Men that died were so often buried where they could not be dug up and scalped. Which one of the dead was left buried after the Far West made land at the area where the corn was abandoned On Grant Marshes run to Fort Lincoln, . The man from the Far West was dug up and scalped. Found a good video on UA-cam speaking of the pistols that Custer had ... a 41 I think and one of three made. Anyway, it was about Doctor Porter who said the hole in Custer was that rounds size as Porter had one of the three also. Makes sense as most of Reno's men were scalped and mutilated but suicides were taboo as who wants that medicine. Custer shot between the ear and temple is coincidence enough while Tom was the most mutilated or so it is said. Still all this Hodgson stuff. Why did Reno continue to make stupid decisions and it also shows that the warriors pulled off enough to allow Reno and a few men to go down the bluffs. also, I don't know if it is this video or my computer, but the sound was going in and out. Siobhan, you make history come alive as we need to put a face on these people and ensure that they are not forgotten. Here is a question for you. Do you think that Benteen delayed at the Morass and elsewhere because he did not want to do "No quarter" on a village and kill all. I know it was something that spare those over 12 and yet that would be such an impossibility. Benteen was pretty brave when entrenched. But then again, he asked and received the advance which most forget and the map you showed on a previous video has it close. The command was divided up and sent in directions at the curve in the valley approach which prevented them from being seen in any direction. Plus many testified as far as enlisted that Benteen had the advance taken away from him there as he was sent to the left. anyways it is one thing that leads to another that prevents me from getting anything done. You could and should make a video of all the premonitions of the battles from the leaving of Fort Lincoln to the guidons falling to the rear, to Bouyer saying it was his last day and also Reynolds with his premonition, the man behind the hardtack box and later in the campaign when William O Taylor asked for discharge as he was aware he was going to die. Many more examples but it is a wonder how much foreshadowing and fear became the rule for Custer to continue as he also had a premonition.

      So true, Conway! Here is the account about a sergeant asking Reno to go help the wounded left behind after the retreat from the timber, excerpted from the diary of Sergeant Charles White, in the Walter Camp Collection, Denver (in Hardorff's Indian Views of the Custer Fight, p21): "Sergeant Thomas McLaughlin of Co H told Major Reno that there should be some one sent to rescue the wounded, and Reno remarked that the Sergeant might get a detail together and rescue them himself, if he wanted to. The poor wounded were butchered in sight of the seven companies, and there was no officer brave enough to go to help them. This has a discouraging effect on the men."

    I’m not sure from what I’ve read that you could use the term”died gallently”.

    • @SiobhanFallon7
      @SiobhanFallon7  Місяць тому

      @shanedouglas6971 Why not, Shane? I guess we could debate if the Reno retreat was gallant, and Benny was begging soldiers to help him when he was injured and then killed. But it seems like a young man who has served honorably, came from a wealthy family and chose soldiering anyway, ought to be remembered as gallant if he dies in battle, unless proven otherwise. Benny didn't order the retreat.
      Can you share your thoughts with me?

    Your volume is too low when mine is dialed up max.. A doctor examined Custer's body and found a pistol round in his head, which might indicate that Custer committed suicide. He kept it a secret until Custer's wife passed away. Any truth to this?

    • @SiobhanFallon7
      @SiobhanFallon7  11 місяців тому +2

      Thanks for the feedback-- I'll work on the sound issues!!
      Multiple witnesses make a point of saying that there were no sign of powder burns on Custer's body which is the polite way of making it clear he did not commit suicide.
      Benteen also saw his body and, in the countless letters he later wrote and all the many things he accused Custer of, he never mentioned anything about Custer's death being a suicide.
