My four kids in Derry have been lullabied by this song for years and I never even considered playing it, sounds way to intricate. Well, thanks to a snark tuner, a borrowed Seagull and your excellent video lesson I'm at least on the journey of 'Brady'an enlightenment. The Fleadh should be back in Derry in a couple of years so I've even got a target. Sound man!
+Declan Coulter love it! the journey of 'Brady'n enlightenment'. You might really like my video of Okechobee Wind, its an American tune, based off mandolin, but incorporates the same finger picking and pick picking at the same time. And good luck if you enter the Fleadh. Cheers from Oregon!
I had the pleasure of playing on the same bill as Paul Brady 6 or seven times during the late seventies early eighties, this was always my favorite PB song, but I have never attempted to play it until now, a truly awesome lesson. Thank you.
In my 40 +\- yrs of playing guitar, I've so far stayed away from open tunings... but this song played by Paul, might push me into learning open G, if for nothing else, then to learn Arthur McBride... a mighty tune, thanks much
This will be the definitive lesson for this amazing arrangement in perpetuity. Your guitar skills are a given, your ability to teach this cogently, accurately & methodically is extraordinary.
Amigo!!! No sabes lo emocionante que es poder aprender este tema. Lo escucho desde que soy un niño y hoy a mis 37 años puedo tocarlo, gracias de corazón!
Well Dan, as an Englishman I’ve been challenged to play this by an Irishman from Achill Island. I descend from an Irish family in Waterford and have always felt my musical roots lie in the Emerald Isle which is why I gravitate towards this magical Paul Brady arrangement. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, this lesson has been invaluable and I’m sure I’ll add appreciably to the views of this fine video. My efforts are paying dividend so far and the sound of my Lowden 010 In open G is giving me goosebumps. Sláinte 🙏🏻☘️
@@danielsherrill Hi Dan, thanks for the info, The Lakes of Pontchartrain was a song I used to do fingerstyle but it’s evolved and now I’ve recorded it using a hybrid technique. Here’s the link if you’d like to hear it. ua-cam.com/video/v4VC94KM47U/v-deo.html Best wishes and thanks for your tutorials, they’re fab.
Ah Daniel, this is so very helpful. I've not great hope I'll ever be playing this in a truly Bradyesque fashion, but your tutorial gives me solid groundwork to build my own interpretation. I'm pretty sure I've listened to the AI/PB album a thousand or more time over the last 25 years, thanks for helping make sense of PB's playing on this! Slán from Oregon
One of the best tutorials on the Net! The production values are very clear! The clarity of the fingering are amazing! Your longer "In The Tooth Now" ! You obliviously have a deep love/Passion for the instrument! Thanks,!
This is amazing! I've been trying to play this in DADGAD, and while the bass and rhythm can sound similar, it lacks the melodic phrases which Paul plays. I agree, this is the version. Thank you for the detailed analysis.
Nicely done, man. I'm a very reclusive and somewhat anally retentive guitarist that's very easily upset by bad youtube covers/lessons. You picked a notoriously difficult tune and nailed it. You rock.
@@danielsherrill I'll definitely check them out. Not sure if you need require a lesson still. But I recently learnt how to play Paul Bradys arrangement of Lakes of Ponchartrain and would be happy to make a video on it if you need it. I realise this is 3 years late ... sorry.
6 years too late, but Happy Saint Patrick's Day Daniel and thank you ver very much for this fantastically made, explained, simplified, well displayed and executed video. I have been using your video for about a week now. I didn't think I'd be able to play this song. I heard it for the first time 4 weeks ago and have been obsessed with it. Thanks to you I've digested 60-70% of the tabs. Thank you very very much. This is my project for playing in Ireland at a good standard at Xmas 2021!🇮🇪🎄🇮🇪🎄
Thank you so much for this! It's been stuck in my head on repeat for the past year and I'm finally able to play it now. I put my guitar into open G a couple of weeks ago and just said I wasn't allowed to tune it back to normal until I learned it.
Hello Daniel, not sure if you're still checking comments, but I wanted to say thank you very much for this video. I came across your channel while trying to find a tutorial for this song. I'm glad you're uploading again- we definitely appreciate it. I know this isn't the best known song, so a tutorial might be kind of niche, but I am really glad you posted it; I won't be able to sleep easy until I've learned the song. Thanks for all the work you do!
Thanks, I needed a kick-start on this song... Paul Brady's version is a few notes higher, and the haunting near-falsetto, but yours is very well broken down. Do more!
Hi, thanks for your video, I always thought this was waay above my skill level but now I can kind of follow along and am getting more convincing at the intro. A beautiful piece of music and very well taught so many thanks from me
Yes, yes, yes, you nailed it. I was struggling just to find the right tuning to mimic Brady's iconic version of this beautiful tune. Your video made it easy. Thank you Daniel.
Unfortunately you aren't explaining the finger placement. Great tune and very appreciative of the tutorial but the opening is still a blur with the higher string slide up in that A7 formation but doesn't work all the way up the board and can't figure it out.
I don't even play guitar (I play trombone!) and still I love this video. There is so damn much in Paul Brady's Arthur McBride that you have explained to me that is so interesting. BTW the parts that have always grabbed my attention in PB's playing are the bass notes (baritone?) that ascend that you worked on from about 5:25. You didn't focus on those lower notes, but they were there. Perhaps because I am a low brass instrumentalist my ears gravitate in the lower notes of guitars .. whatever, I really enjoyed your faithful adherence to a part of PB's performance that always meant a lot to me!
great job, thanks for taking the time to work this up. I'm learning it and plan on including it in an Open G set with Jackson Browne's Running on Empty and some others. any good Open G song suggestions?
Many thanks for this Daniel, I've loved this song ever since I first heard it a few years ago. I've now dug out and dusted off my old classical guitar after thirty years and am struggling to master the pick which I've never used before! But you are an excellent teacher so please keep up the good work!
Because it's too high for me to sing in open G, I moved it to open D which really just involves moving the tab one string across. It works well, I think.
brilliant, absolutely brilliant. thought id never get to play paul brady, but you have shown us all the way. brilliant. do you have any more irish folk/ballad songs ?
I love the song. I can’t seem to catch the chords after G and the two minor chords. Tried to access the tab to no avail. Just my opinion but if you had started the video with how to play the chords instead of assuming we could get it from watching you, I would long since have been able to play it.

it would be great if there were more emphasis on what fingers on placed on which string and fret when it "appears" that one is onto a string but is just hovering over due to the positioning. I have been trying to learn this intro for months now. 😞
I hear ya, it’s a difficult piece for sure, if you wanted to do a thirty minute video lesson that could be a good option to clarify what you’re wanting
@danielsherrill I wouldn't mind that. It's really the opening riff. The rest (verses) are not overly difficult once you understand the repeating progression but I've not encountered a more difficult set of slides and movements. What would you recommend because even tabs won't do the flourishing and hammer ons etc justice.
@@danielsherrill Well, the slowing down won't help much because of the inability to see behind existing unused fingers but I really do want to learn this tune and hope that if I commit to a lesson, I'd get my brain to capture it.
