Lance, my brother, Tom Tomlinson, worked for Bernie from 1978 to 1985. He drove that coach and the successor coaches that Bernie owned throughout the years. My brother spent many days driving to Custom Coach for service, updates, and unscheduled visit through out the years. Even though Bernie kept the coaches in Lakeland and Miami, those coaches went all over the country on the hydroplane circuit. I spent a few trips with my brother on the diff coaches. For the early coaches, Bernie would sell his old coaches to August Busch III and he would get a new one from Custom Coach. Those older MCI's ran like no other on highways and were great. My brother had a few speeding tickets to show for the speed those coached would on the open road. You have a great coach there, congrats on restoring it to glory days.
thanks for writing all of this down - what a great story and set of memories - means a lot to me! After reading this I remembered it had been mentioned he would sell it over to Augie and then buy-up. Evidently there was a friend of Augie's in St. Louis that loved the Custom Coaches so much that every time Augie traded up, he would too. People just loved those CCC's.
Been in Columbus Ohio my entire 67 years and grew up on the same side of town as Custom Coach. I used to love seeing the completed busses sitting out front waiting for their owners to take delivery as a kid.
Fantastic coaches. I drove a semi - custom one in the early eighties all over the US and Mexico. Front third had the standard seats, middle had two opposing couches and the back was an "office". Was manual shift. Ran circles around other coaches. Would take any hill and pass while doing it. Very nice...
To answer Lance's question, yes, there was only one Antonov 225 and the one he has a picture of with a bus entering it is the one that was destroyed in the initial attack by Russia on Ukraine. It unfortunately was in a hangar that was bombed. Not much left but there is always hope that capital may be found to take the remains and remanufacture the damaged wings and attach them to the one fuselage that has been stored to make another Antonov 225. Too beautiful and unique an aircraft to let the remains be scrapped. Just like many unique old buses with amazing histories of their own. Thanks Scott and Lance for the history lesson on that beautiful bus.
No that was an Antonov An-124 Ruslan, the Antonov An-225 Mriya has 6 turbofan engines and the one in the picture has 4 and the tail configuration is also different. The An-225 was revived and converted into a commercial freighter and entered service in 2001. There was a second An-225 that was never completed and it is currently 60/70 percent complete and Antonov has 30 percent of the parts needed to complete it. China was originally in talks with Antonov about buying it and having it completed but nothing ever came of it. If the Ukraine survives the war as a sovereign country it will likely be completed using many parts salvageable from the destroyed aircraft. The completion cost is estimated to be around $500 million dollars even with everything they have.
It never ceases to amaze me ,them gm eingeniers laying that v8 on its side in hopes that it don't spew oil everywhere and lives a productive life ,awsome machines for shure
This is very cool. I grew up in Detroitand watched the unlimited Hydro races on the Detroit river as a kid, and I had a 1 cylinder Petter diesel in my English Westerly Sailboat.
Watching your video today, if this gentleman is interested in pictures of this bus, tell him to try the Hydroplane Hall of Fame & Museum in Washington state. If he hasn't already. Great video!
The refrigerant type has nothing to do with the longevity of a system. I have seen plenty of 1994 vehicles with R-134 systems that have never been touched.
@@ChrisHarding-lk3jjIt all falls on what manufacturer built the system and how well ventilation pathways were maintained to keep it in its proper operating range. 😊
@@carlbernard4197 When it comes to vehicle air conditioning it all comes down to how well the rubber used holds up. Compressor shaft seals are a very common failure point and of course rubber hoses. Metal on metal flare type connections will hold up much better compared to a connections utilizing an o-ring to create the seal.
As an RV this bus is about $ 500 a year to insure and is the only bus my insurer will offer guaranteed replacement on….as an RV. When I ran this bus commercially in the State of Tennessee (TNDOT) it was roughly $11,500 a year - when we switched to Federal DOT authority it jumped to about $ 17,500 .
I'm an OLD boat racer. One time Bernie saw some boat racing jewelry (ring and necklace) I had on. He said - WHERE DID YOU GET THOSE (they were custom made by a friend of mine). Bernie contacted him and the whole crew received some for gifts (so I heard). I still have my jewelry and get many comments on them.
That's a beautiful bus. People don't appreciate the history and era of Big conversion buses and 2 cycle Detroit diesels that powered them. My mind goes back to the 80s when you had rock bands touring the country in these buses. Thoses days are long gone and the EPA has ruined the new diesel market. I run a DD15 and it's a good engine but the One box or DPF system as it's known had to be replaced before 500K miles. I love the old school diesels These new ones are junk in my opinion.
Saw a lot of their racing at lake Mead near Las Vegas used to go watch these boats run up and down very familiar with Mr Little and their whole racing team along with Ms Budweiser
Lister Generators are some of the most sought after generators out there...most likely very low RPM too...which is why they last forever. I had one on my off grid home in Yellowknife, NWT. It was 30 yrs old and I had it for 6...it never skipped a beat.
That's definitely not the Antonov An-225 Mriya, that's an Antonov An-124 Ruslan. The An-225 is powered by 6 turbofan engines and has a split tail configuration to allow for the Buran to be carried on back similar to the space shuttle on the modified Boeing 747. The one completed An-225 was abandoned after the collapse of the Soviet Union and was revived and converted into a commercial freighter and entered service with Antonov Airlines in 2001.
That's the Ukrainian An-124 "Ruslan" of Antonov Cargo Airlines in the photo. As far as I know it is still flying around right now, 'cause all of them, except one, were abroad at the moment of the Russian attack on Kyiv, which led to the destruction of An-225.✌️☮️🇺🇦
@luckydogbus2317 thar is definitely a plus when a extremely experienced mechanic does the reconditioning of its systems. You know it will be reliable 😊. Job well done 👏 😊
Antonov 225 was a 1 off...almost a 2 off plane - it had 3 engines under each wing. ( total 6 ) That is the one destroyed recently in Ukraine. From the brief glimpse - your photo shows a Antonov 124. ( 4 engine )

That's a pretty cool story. Did you know Lance had it, or did you randomly come across this video?
Been in Columbus Ohio my entire 67 years and grew up on the same side of town as Custom Coach. I used to love seeing the completed busses sitting out front waiting for their owners to take delivery as a kid.
It's a great bus! I especially like that he kept the windows, I think they look so much better than having smooth sides.
Love seeing LANCE again, I wish him all the BEST!
That is a very nice old bus 😍😍👍👍
$65 k that’s a bargain
Not in this market. Maybe 2 years ago, but I don't think he can get 65k for it. 40 maybe but what do I know.
Lance is such a great storyteller. So entertaining to spend some time with him on his bus.
The bus is a moving museum piece. I enjoy learning the unique history. Thanks for posting.
Buying one of lances buses is a sound purchase. The amount of work he’s done to them and the research he has done on them is second to none
Agreed

A beautiful bus Lance with an awesome history. Safe travels. Ken.

Good to see you Lance, so sad for you. Someone is going to get a great bus.
Wow what a beautiful bus. I wish I had the money I would buy it in a heartbeat. It's just something about old buses especially how nice this one is
Dang, super good deal! Very high quality and historic build. Plus it’s a 4106!!!!
Danm I wish I had 65k on hand. Thst bus is awesome 👌 😊
Used to see the Unlimited Hydroplanes in Detroit and remember the Drivers, buses and boats !! Thanks
I can’t watch a man’s heart break any more. That’s so tough.
Hey Lance you are great storyteller 😊😊😊
Man, watching Lance have to divest himself of his dreams is almost like a death in the family. I hate this for him.
Cant make it over there from St Paul til the end of the month, if its available then, Im all in.
This is very cool. I grew up in Detroitand watched the unlimited Hydro races on the Detroit river as a kid, and I had a 1 cylinder Petter diesel in my English Westerly Sailboat.
Best of luck Lance.
How cool is that and the asking price is very reasonable

That’s why it’s still running after 15 years !! It’s R12 system.
It’s been running for 50 years. Just 15 years since he had it serviced

A refrigerator made in 1975 would last for 40 years. A refrigerator made in 2024 will last for 4 years. It ain’t the rubber.
Im sure you can contact Seattle Komo news and, in their archives, have pictures/videos of the bus and the Hydo during Seafair races back then.
"Miss Budweiser". The good ol' days. Today Anheuser-Busch would have probably call the boat "Mx Budweiser"
Man , what a machine ! I would love to own it. I don't think I could afford the down pymt on the insurance!

The bus that beer bought! Very cool.
Copeland was the compressors we had for bulk milk cooling on our dairy farm. They are very strong systems. Ours used R-404 refrigerant. 😊😊
They cool so well - if you wanted to you could hang meat in that bus after an hour - it really does/can blow in the 30's after running a while.

Gotta love the sound of a Detroit.
What a gorgeous bus!
Miss Budwiser is in a museum in Seattle the museum is on youtube
Beautiful bus, it was built the same year i was born! That means i should buy it right?! Lol
Thinking about picking up a prevost with a 10 speed Allison transmission. Would love to have your shop look at it.

That lister is very good we have welder 60 years old still great
Lovely bus
Is it 4cyl or 8
Bus is a 8V71 - Lister is a LPW4
At $ 65,000 I think it is a steal, but I'd want one of those MCIs if I had the money.
Great history lesson.
Great price on the bus 🚌
1955 GMC scenicruiser

Very nice, has the steering been upgraded to Sheppard?
Power steering assist from the factory
And rebuilt by Scott. Is extremely tight with no non-driver input wander or deflection.
@luckydogbus2317 thar is definitely a plus when a extremely experienced mechanic does the reconditioning of its systems. You know it will be reliable 😊. Job well done 👏 😊
keep the clips coming
