- In this episode, I am starting the big adventure to try and reach the Richat Structure, also known as the Eye of the Sahara or the Eye of Africa. An incredible feature that lies in the remote Mauritanian desert. I decide to team up with Ahmed, who I met earlier and is very knowledgeable about this part of the country. He also carries my 40 liters of fuel, all the water, my luggage and camping equipment, so my bike is much easier to handle through the sand and over the steep rocky mountain...

I'm a lone rider, I never travel with anyone else when I'm riding my motorbike, so I understand the feeling you wanting to travel alone, make your own decisions and be independent. But I also can respect your decision so much to travel with Ahmed in this case ... otherwise it would've been nearly impossible and probably too dangerous. I think with Ahmed you've a new friend for life. He'll never forget this too. What a nice man!

I couldn't help but notice how Ahmed gave a drink of water to the camel herder in the desert. It was a small gesture, but an essential one that makes life possible in harsh environments like the Sahara.
Standard practice in the Sahara, you never pass by without saying hello and offering water.

I was travelling through Indian Thar and our driver carried lots of one liter water bottles, we stopped to give water to shepherd and nomads.
Water is life and one learns it's value when passing through these though terrains.
I was in Mauritania in 1990, it was the most desolate countryside I have ever seen. Noraly is showing us so much more of this vast land than I saw all those years ago, these episodes have been among my favorite ever.
Desolate is the word. Mauritania is the true desert nation... perhaps only some parts of Libya compare. Noakchott has changes some since the 90s, and more urbanization and solar panels and satellite internet have made the most desolate villages less so.
And Noraly's guide Ahmed has likewise made these among my favorite episodes ever. What an adventure. RIDE THE WORLD. Feel Free.
Well .. with today’s technology’s .. Satellites, more reliable vehicles,outdoor accessories, etc just might be more possible than decades ago..

Traveling with someone else who assists in achieving what you are doing and significantly contributes to your safety, does not detract from your journey as far as we as viewers are concerned. This was a great episode. I really enjoy seeing your interactions with locals, whether that is very briefly, or over several days. Ride safe Noraly.
That's right. There's nothing wrong with having someone assist in a journey like this - especially when your life may actually depend on it.
It would have been nearly impossible to accomplish this ride with all the extra weight!

Your adventures take people like me to places I will never see in my life time (I'm 65 with cancer). Your adventures have opened my eyes to places that are amazing and unknown. You are opening eyes to locations that are real and you are traveling through them. Commercial channels take us to tourist destinations. Itchy Boots take us to real places.
I just have to say I am 70 years old and have seen my fare share but this is my favorite channel by far. It puts a smile on my face before I see the video. Your determination is spectacular.

I just can’t get over the fact that Noraly is alone crossing this uninhabited beautiful desert and she just hooks up with Ahmed who becomes her guide! What a beautiful sole for him to guide her to these destinations. It’s all part of the adventure, I guess. I am soooo jealous!! Love these episodes!
Having Ahmed as a guide, even though you prefer travelling solo, is adding far more than you are losing!

Ahmed is getting paid a substantial sum, so that isn't the same as all of the people who have helped Noraly without being paid.
Being adventurous does not mean disregarding the risks inherent in adventure. A wise adventurer looks for the right means to achieve his goals, including with outside help like you are doing. Geology and off-road motorbikes go together like peas and carrots, and no geologist worth their salt could ever pass up seeing the Eye of the Sahara up close and personal! Here in Texas we have El Solatario, a laccolith dome similar to the Richat structure. The geology is spectacular and the riding is, too, but I don’t think it can compare for pure Indiana Jones romance to the Eye of the Sahara. What a kick in the pants! I trust Ahmed is enjoying the adventure _almost_ as much as Noraly! 😃
Man, Ahmed has really been the MVP the last few episodes! Dropping everything to ride with you for several days. I hope he starts up some adventure guiding business, since he's obviously got the knowhow.

I loved the encounter with the three Nomads! The limited communication was evident. The universal smile and exchange of names was great! Once the Nomads realized they couldnt hold a conversation, they signaled to Noraly go, go, go! and that she did, smiling and laughing away!

What a beautiful day for us to see! I know solo is how you roll but Ahmed made it possible to do an almost impossible ride. I don’t think you and Alaska would survive all that extra weight. I was wondering in the last couple videos how hard a time you were having in that sand, trying to keep momentum. Wildly interesting area. It was as though the camels were posing for their drone shot. Really loved the video and of course a big shout out to Ahmed for helping you make it possible!
Wonderful episode! What I wasn't expecting to see was a mountain range, trees, patches of green, and people walking miles and miles from anywhere. I love the smiles of those 3 men and the one you came upon later. Such gentle friendly people. They walk right up to you, greet you, and shake your hand. It's so heart warming. The aerial views are wonderful and seeing the epic beautiful landscape of the desert at such a vast scale. I'm glad you have Ahmed as a travel guide. The stars in the night sky must be amazing.

“I normally travel alone” for your own safety, there is nothing wrong to travel with a guide , especially in desolate places, this decision shows how smart you are and gives us a good example to follow.
I went to beautiful Mauritania twice and crossed the Sahara every time in a jeep but never was alone …stay safe, healthy and enjoy…😎

Well to be honest, if there was a decent road or trail thru the Desert she would have continued solo
I was thinking while she described her logistics, they could meet every 4 hours while underway, but she would have to navigate her self. From Paris Dakar coverage I expected she would need momentum to get through deep sand and dunes. Noraly had some video in the Kalahari Rally and learned about weight on the rear subframe!
I did not think visiting the Richat Structure would be possible due to the remoteness of its location. Leave it to Noraly to solve the logistics of the trip. Once again, thanks to Ahmed for the assist. The drone shot over the camels was a favorite here. This adventure just keeps getting better. Let's GO!!!!

There are times you need the others to go farther ("alone, I go faster. Together, we go further").
It is far wiser to go with a guide like Ahmed. The ride is enough demanding to not put yourself in danger by a ego-like decision. It doesn't remove any value of you challenge.

The Mauritanian desert is amazing. The difference in the terrain between the mountains, the plateaus and the flat desert is incredible. Lol…. The camels sure were interested in your drone flybys! The platos looked more like dry lakes or dry river beds.
Alone in that area is to dangerous, if’s the bike get a problem.

I never paid attention to life in any desert. Thank you for educating us. Increíble that trees grow there. So purposeful life is possible to be found anywhere. But nomads are perfect example of adapting to environment and survival and learn to be content. So many of us are spoiled, complacent, thanks Noraly for taking us out of comfort zone of blindness to the rest of the world, specially desert life,
My wife and I have followed you all the way from India. She really worries about you on your adventures (probably more than she does about me on mine) and this time she is really pleased that you selected the safer option and followed your fuel, water and luggage instead of trying to drag them over that terrain in that climate.

It's never the people, 😊she is afraid of the dangerous terrain in some places. Especially when Noraly rides next to steep slopes or crosses rivers.
It is amazing that the people just stroll around in the desert, just like we would in our neighborhood.

I love the music accompanying the drone footage! Also, the vast salt crusted areas are probably dried sea beds, the edges beaches (fine powdered sand) and the water-marked mountain… former islands, all attesting to sea levels rising and falling. Atlantis is euphemism for many settlements that have come and gone through ancient, slow (or rapid) sea level cycles, perhaps?

I don't think it is any place for a lonely male biker. Many of the places she goes are really sketchy for both man and woman.

Great adventures are always a mixture of desire and knowledge. In 1953 Sir Edmund Hillary teamed up with Tenzing Norkay to reach the top of the Himalayas. Today Noraly teamed up with Ahmet to reach the Eye of the Sahara. Thank you to everyone who shows us the value of collaboration between different people to achieve common goals.
Atar is my mom's homeland. Cool to see someone visiting it. I saw in one of your other video titles that you drank camel milk. I hope it was pasteurized and that you didn't get the worst stomachache of your life lol!
The Richat structure is next to Chinquet, where my dad's tribe served as scholars for centuries.

Rashid i saw a report on Libya and the fascinating culture, geography, the lovely people and some of the incredable places there and some of the ancient history, some of it from many thousands of years ago. I was spellbound and it looks like a great country to tour whether on a bike, camel car or van or truck. Often the least touristic places are the friendliest, most sincere with the most amazing people.
@@Ian-bq7gp But this is in Mauritanian btw...long way from Libya....its nearer to Spain than going to Libya which is near Egypt. Compared to Mauritania, Libya has much more greenery and cities and more developed because they got oils...well they had more oil before the US bomb the country and took it and they are actually the richest country in north Africa when Gaddafi was still alive.

Noraly.....Looks like your choice is correct accompanied by Ahmad as a guide.... you can't imagine if you are doing this trip alone in the middle of a desert that doesn't know where you are, GPS won't help much if you go through terrain like that

Easy to do when 1. One has lived there all their life. 2. The few landmarks such as Ben Amir, Oasis's, and other small rock outcroppings become essential visual waypoints. They can be seen from far distances. The Nomads of the desert have used these for thousands of years to navigate across the sands.

The Mauritanian nomads actually use stars in the night as marks, during the daylight they use landmarks and the types of trees growing in that area

Realizing your limitations before starting and then having someone there to make it work is priceless!

if Alaska did start normally back then, I think this whole journey with 20 liters water without help from Ahmed would be impossible.

I'm so very sorry that you were not able to travel alone through this section. I understand how you feel. I too like to travel alone when I am on the motorcycle. That way I can go at my own speed and do what I want to do. However, the greater part of wisdom was to do what you have done and Ahmed seems to be a great person. Thanks for these videos. By watching your channel I have gotten to see so much of the world that I would never have been able to see myself.

I'm so glad you decided to have Akmed guide you through this very difficult, sandy, and extremely hot terrain. It only made good sense to avoid running out of fuel and water, getting stuck in the soft sand, and having to look for a camel to ride (thank you for the beautiful scenery and video of the camels). Noraly has been expending her efforts and resources to ride to remote Richat so we don't have to. I'm sure all of us appreciate this challenging ride. I felt myself getting parched just watching the video. Logistically wise to have Ahmed assist, there is no shame is being reasonably safe engaging in such an inhospitable environment. I am continually impressed with her journey. Brava Noraly and rubberside down!
Noraly I think it is refreshing to have achmed guiding you. I know you want to travel alone but being safe is more important. Great series so far. ❤
Hats off! I did the Tamanrasset desert in Algeria riding a 17 GSA exactly the way you did this trip for 16 days in January 2019 and I understand perfectly your struggles.. The African Sahara definitely needs a mule to carry all our stuff to "survive" but it’s a magical experience to live at least once in a life time.. thank you for your video, good luck for the rest of your journey.. ❤

Edit: I want to add, those people walking through the desert… I knew nomads exist, but Noraly made It real and it baffled me.
This is the quality of Noraly’s video’s. You see her battle the conditions of the desert and suddenly there are these men… walking.
After that she goes on, no drama, and I’m still thinking about these men, in awe.
Those men probably sold Ahmed the fresh camel meat…who knows… they have to be glad to have visitors obviously?
