    One of the things I love about this show is how it baits you into enjoying the violence…only to rip you out of that enjoyment with the weight of consequences of that violence. It creates a crazy emotional roller coaster that makes you almost feel guilty. It’s amazing!

      *I loved Arcane and it is excellent in every aspect!*
      But I don't know, a lot of people see it as a fucking celestial masterpiece peak fiction, but in my case, I just don't see it like that😅. Also, this same situation is happening again right now but with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

      @@carlosdanielcalderonmontoy3723 I agree that the term "masterpiece" gets thrown around a lot, usually right in the middle of the hype fase of something new. Seems like this is the case with Cyberpunk right now, it's hyped and to make the hype legit it seems you have to throw in the word "masterpiece".
      For me "groundbreaking" seems like a more suitable word for Arcane season 1.

    GOD! I loved it. The plot, the visuals, the animation, the musical score, everything is perfect! I think my favorite part is the emotions, it is so hard to include microexpressions in animation, but Arcane does it so well. The microexpressions make it seem like they're real people, even though I know they're animated characters.

    I think one of the things that makes it sooooo great is that fact that, even if you don’t realize it, it is beat for beat a classic Greek Tragedy. In every way. Starting with a “song” to set the tone, a “chorus singing” throughout to keep the pace going, every step forward in the plot being driven by different characters’ “fatal flaws”, moments when you can see the hope and happy ending over the horizon but it’s always too little too late. There’s a great breakdown video that actually goes through it beat for beat that explains better than I do. I’m CONVINCED that is why it hits so hard

    What's weird is. There's a number of great characters, and I think Jynx's story is definitely the centerpiece of this show... but I find myself really liking Marcus' story. I don't think I like Marcus himself, but I really like this story of a man that isn't a hero, that isn't especially brave, who doesn't really fit into the role he's given... who is entitled and privileged, who is very smug about his position in the world. I love that he doesn't understand his superior, but then steps into their boots and finds himself completely out of his depth.
    I find that there's a lot to talk about, for example, his admiration of Grayson is interesting... but what does it mean? Is this a man who has finally understood that Grayson was an excellent leader? Or is his admiration just a consequence of his own failing, him saying "She's everything that I'm not".

    • @Erick-tv8oq
      @Erick-tv8oq Рік тому +9

      Marcus is one of my favourite characters in the series, because he's just... real. Most of the time corruption in our world is not born out of straight up evil, it's born out of people who are looking out for themselves and those immediately around them, yet never see the big picture, or never get a chance to act as part of it. Marcus seemed to me like a guy who wanted to prove himself by overreaching in a way he thought would protect his side of the world, and when that horribly backfired on him, had to reap the consequences throughout all his life. It's terribly real for a single bad decision to spiral out of control and engulf someone's entire life, and that's exactly what happened to him. He wanted to do good, as shown by his guilty conscience, his throwing of Vi in jail while telling Silco she was dead (I know that wasn't the most thoughtful action, but it did save her life in a way). But he also is a deeply prejudiced man, subtly dominanted by an "Us vs Them" mindset that costs him everything in the end (ever noticed how even after the timeskip he didn't hesitate at all to shoot Ekko, yet couldn't bring himself to shoot Cait?). I think he's a completely normal human whose actions bring the story to motion, yet his existence is so absolutely ordinary he dies the most unceremonious death in the series (couldn't even finish his last words). The most tragic thing is that if he had stayed under Grayson's wing he could have eventually developed into a person who actually sees the bigger picture.
      I don't hate Marcus, because I feel like I could meet him just down the street when corrupt cops come round to collect protection taxes from restaurants and such. And that's a testament to brilliant character writing if anything.

      @@felixowen2693 I felt like it was appropriate for the situation. If I may relate to ot a bit, I know back when I was in elementary/highschool when I would get in trouble and had to get bailed out by my mom, after getting angry she would similarly talk about her expectations for me. Granted the tragic thing that happens didn't happen to me or my mother thankfully and I did have a father, though he was working 90% of the time so he was pretty absent. I suspect what David's mom was feeling, similar to my mother, was a sense of disappointment for the situation mixed with a sense of pride that her son has a chance to go beyond their means. And to both my mother's credit and David's mother's credit, they worked hard to pay for his schooling so he could make a name for himself. I wholeheartedly agree that Arcane is great. I ACTIVELY dislike League of Legends (the game the show is based upon), but I LOVE Arcane. The storytelling is that strong. Everything was top-notch. The voice-acting, the cinematography, the use of color - all of it - DIVINE.
    My favorite scene was Jinx vs. Ekko because there was so much going on in that exchange on so many levels, and the creators of that scene trusted us to put it all together. So we have two characters there who are basically mirror images of each other. As kids, they looked up to Vi, but neither of them were anywhere near as capable as fighters. The primary traumas in their lives even happened on the same day. The main difference between the two characters is how they wound up processing those traumas. I really loved that they could have shown us an over-the-top battle given what the two characters are capable of, but instead they frame it in the context of a children's game with flashes between the past and present, and a subtle hint of the power Ekko is using. The part that really hits me in the feels is the end of the fight - specifically, the look on Ekko's face when he realizes that he's pummeling someone who was basically like a sister to him.
    It was such an amazing show, and I can't wait for Season 2.

    I'm glad to see you cover this series, even though it's been out for a while, because it truly is an astonishing piece of storytelling. The character work is perhaps some of the best I've ever seen in any tv-series. Every character has depth, every philosophy or perspective they have gets explored to the point that you can relate to it, or understand it to a degree. The complexity in that alone is remarkable, and then everything else comes in. The phenomenal plot with all its twists and turns, the exceptional dialogue, the artwork of these animations themselves, it's just... A masterpiece.
    Arcane broke my heart so many times with so many different characters. They made violent conflicts and the action scenes feel so awesome and entertaining, only to turn them brutal and terrible shortly after. I still vividly remember the story. The ending made my heart stop. I hugged my little sister so fucking hard the next time I saw her just because of that.
    That was my favorite element of the story. How it managed to both speak something true about human society as well as dive deep into relations and love of family - and how it isn't enough when it comes to healing those broken and lost, traumatized and wounded. It speaks its message with such subtlety and conviction, it represent a vast spectrum of people not as they're usually portrayed (skin colour, sexual orientation, gender) but as ACTUAL people where those elements are but a fraction of who they really are as a person. It's so real and honest, and so well told and executed that there's no doubting the heart and talent of the people who made this show - at every level. It's phenomenal.
