This is one of *favorite* versions of the Presentation!!!
That fact that I was there to see it may have some influence on that....😜😜😜
    Absofreakinglutely Awesome!
They compliment each other so well vocally, and the purity of the scene is so evident in both of their voices/sounds
    😎😎😎

Hard to believe that von Stade was 38 and that Blegen was 40 when they performed this duet, but there you are - and they both sing very, very, very well here!!! Thank you VERY much for sharing this delight from the Met Centennial Gala with us!!!!

It was six your gala split into two three hour sessions. This was sung during the afternoon session. Miss Troyanos was scheduled to sing the role of Octavian in the Final Trio of Der Rosencavalier that evening but fell ill so Miss Von Stade want in her place.
Both performances were wonderful. I was glued to my TV all day Saturday. It was a unique and wondrous experience which began my love of opera.

    Dear ojamiguel,
I nominate you for a UA-cam Grand Award for posting this. One of the most beautiful musical moments of the 20th century. Conductor is Jeffrey Tate. Many thnks.

Blegen's voice beautiful, but so delicate it's hard even to hear in some parts of the Met's cavernous house. I lived in NYC at this time, but to my eternal regret, could afford neither the ticket price or nor the time to see this, as I was in grad school and very poor.

Perhaps she wanted to indicate that she's singing a trouser role - men in 17th and 18th centuries did have this kind of collars - didn't they? In the early 1980's when this performance took place, probably it's not acceptable for her to wear a pant-suit. In the clip of her singing with Battle the finale of Der R. in the early 1990's she wore a pant-suit. I interpret this dress as a statement on her role. Flicka is nothing but elegant.Indeed the two angelic voices send me to heaven.

Not acceptable for a woman to wear pants in 1983? You must not have been around then. Mary Tyler Moore broke that barrier a full twenty years earlier playing Laura Petrie on the old Dick Van Dyke show.

The conductor Jeffrey Tate has scoliosis and is therefore significantly deformed. It is not the size of the suit, rather Jeffrey's physical deformity that creates the look you describe.

Beautiful duet- voices at their prime but that dress on von stade is definitely a faux pas! Never seen anything like it- frill neck lizard...but with angelic voice

Oh, perhaps 'strain' was not the correct word. Difficulty, there certainly is.

  • @forallyouknow

I notice this Sophie has a bit of difficulty/strain singing and controlling her highest notes. and her jaw quivers. still, at some parts, her voice is quite pristine.
