I think it`s because her fame originated from the Pussy Cat Dolls. That type of music, with its overt sensuality and sexuality is not seen as particularly creative or talented. No matter that society will say "Do your thing, it`s your life", there are always consequences. Fortunately for Nicole, she has such vocal talent, she may overcome this problem.

I think the way she used her voice here was deliberately for the raw, exhausted emotion of the song. I've never seen Cats (a bucket list thing) but it sounds to me like the song is sung from a lonely, tired and disappointed place in the character's storyline. This came out beautifully in her performance. It actually made me cry. So whether her vocals sound off or not, she emoted perfectly what I assume the song is meant to.

asingleverse She's a fantastic theatre singer. Her acting through song is just beautiful and I really think she needs to do Broadway. The Evita song you mentioned always gives me chills whenever I hear it. I have mad respect for her as a singer now that I've seen these.
@redraven24, I have seen Cats twice, and you're spot on. Sometimes the emotion does more for a song than hitting every song. Nicole gave me goosebumps and teary eyes. She nailed the part of
Grizzabela. It's easy to see why she got the nomination for the part in London.

When I heard her singing Phantom of the Opera, I was sold. She really is a great singer.. And then I came upon this and then a lot more. I just wish I could see her on broadway one day.

@@David-su2oi Her performance at Andrew Lloyd Webbers 40th anniversary was MIND BLOWING beuatifully sung and portrayed. She embodied Eve Peron. What people dont know is that is classically trained in Opera. She also performs a duet of Dont Cry for Me Argentina (in Italian) with the world great Andrea Bocelli. She has a musical theater back ground, PCD took her away from all of that and put her in a box. People and their comments on here are extremely ignorant

Singing is not always about hitting this or that note!! Specially in musical theatre. I love this version she is just so emotional and raw not trying to "reach the notes" but instead attempting to convey the true essence of the song, the character an so on. So much respect for her.

I got to see her in Cats and I have seen many west end shows, but Nicole singing "Memory" rates as the best 4 minutes I have ever experienced. As you said, the audience was in total silence and then rapturous applause at the end. It was totally captivating and actually better than this performance at the Olivier awards
This isn't a polished studio version of the song. It's a live performance, in character, with all the raw emotion the part calls for. And it is simply wonderful.
She is UNREAL! Her commitment to the emotion in this song is out of this world. Her voice and face at the end makes me cry

I think she was not going for a 'pretty' rendition of this song, but as the song is sung in the play with the grittyness of the character.
Nicole has a musical theatre background.... she’s absolutely amazing at this!!! Her performance in “Cats” is not just about singing pretty but really getting into the character and I believe she showed everyone that she can definitely do that!!!

I watched this from the front row of CATS in London with Nicole performing, she had the whole audience in tears, when she sings the last verse with such power it literally felt like she had hit you in the chest with her words. absolutely amazing

I've seen her do this song b4. She is amazing but this wasnt her best. It is what it is. Anyone that says it is doesnt have a clue. May have just been nerves or something bc if the setting. It didnt feel as natural and easy as the other times I've heard her sing it. She was trying to hard here. She shouldve relaxed and just sang the song

I'm so glad to see someone that understands that music isn't just about pitch accuracy or vocal prowess. Music is the language of the soul and should be treated accordingly. If you can't emote, you can't sing. This is such an emotional rollet coster to listen to! And that's how it should be...

This song had never made me cry before, until I watched this performance. She really truly expressed something from deep inside when she sang. I couldn't help but relate to it.
Nicole can really sing high notes and being manifested on different events but in here it is so different. She is giving life to the song, the very character and the story. You can really feel the emotions!! Kudos!
I knew she could sing But WOW she can belt it out. I'm so impressed. This is not an easy song to sing. I saw her & the pussy cat dolls when they opened for Britney & she sounded great in concert but I had no clue girl could sing like this.
People are complaining yet I think she still did well considering she's been working her butt off all year. She's not at her absolute best here I agree, but she still gave a passionate performance. She had to do her album promo Sept. - Nov. of last year, then Cats from December - February. Right after Cats, she flew to do shows in India, Philippines and Italy. After that she flew back to LA, back into the studio for album rework then had to film 6 weeks straight for her new show on NBC. They had just finished filming the season finale the night before and she flew straight to sound check in the UK for this show. A bunch of people were complaining she wasn't in costume - well Grizabella's makeup takes about an hour itself to be put on, not including the wig and costume. Any normal person would be exhausted but Nicole still gave it everything she had into that performance.
Couldn't have said it better! I don't understand why so many people can't acknowledge how talent and gifted this lady is....doesn't get into my head.

Yes... they obviously wanted to use some younger popular singer & have a diverse cast.. Jennifer Hudson has a strong voice but putting an R&B spin on it does not do this incredible song justice. So Nicole or Leona Lewis would have fit better since they stuck to the original vision of this song.
Yes, Nicole is a great singer and her tone falls more in line with the operatic way the song is traditionally sang. But Jennifer can sing circles around her. She just has more of a gospel flair to her voice due to her upbringing. The point of the remake is to put a different spin on it. Grizabella doesn’t have to be portrayed one particular way. Not to mention Jennifer has an Oscar AND Grammy. I think she will do the role and song justice!
I agree. I think she should have been. Nicole understands the words, and the music behind them. To Jennifer, it is just music. Jennifer is a great singer, but Nicole has done some great broadway songs. She knows the songs and how to perform them. Jennifer does not. It is clear in this performance.

I have seen her perform live. This is not a performance, but a masterpiece. Broadway is something to experience. Jennifer is someone you would watch in a concert performance; nothing more and nothing less. Nicole gets the words and meaning behind them. That is the true meaning behind this musical and the character she plays on broadway. Nicole has performed Evita, Phantom of the Opera, and the list goes on. She knows Broadway and Weber. Her performance is beautiful. Listen to her other performances before you say that Jennifer Hudson is your pride and joy.

Ok, she blows the roof off at 3:41 - 3:50 and it gave me the chills. Literally. But it just goes to show how good Elaine, Betty, and Barbra are in this song. I still love her performance here, and her interpretation, but it's still a notch below in the overall efforts of my favorite 3. Hats off to Nicole because she really is a phenomenal singer. Way underrated. She's much more talented in this genre than her pop crap.
