    Your takedown of Myth #2 is actually the underlying philosophy of your entire approach to guitar education - and why I personally consider your content and your approach to be the most worthwhile. So many other UA-cam guitar channels teach specific licks and riffs. Memorizing hundreds if not thousands of riffs is not the way to ”make” music - it’s a way to regurgitate what you’ve memorized. It makes so much more sense to invest your time as a student in learning the “why” behind the “how.” With that approach, even if I want to “faithfully” play a cover song in a band setting, I don’t need to memorize a solo note for note; instead, by understanding where the original guitarist switched from minor pentatonic to major, or targeted a particular chord tone, or whatever, I can play my OWN solo in the style of the original, and I’ll actually end up quoting some of the original phrases because I’m playing “in the mind of . . . .”

    I got the blues pretty bad so I decided that I might as well learn to play the blues and that’s how my guitar journey has started. 4 guitars later and I find learning to play is really joyful.

    Stich, thx so much for this. I have been playing for 3 years and primarily listen to blues music. I play a hour or two per day but have hit the rut. I hit the pitfall u mention of buying the blues licks books and can play them well but they don’t translate into real playing. This video helps immensely and will be checking out the blues matrix immediately. You have a real gift as a teacher and as a player. You are hands down my favorite instructor on UA-cam. Thx again 👍👊

    Nice video, and I'll make an Al Gore Rhythm Comment.
    Really glad I discovered Stich, he'll be a reference for me in the future. For now I'm learning the basics of music, both the piano and ukulele. I can't play the guitar since I have a FURS Syndrome, and my left shoulder isn't much better.
    I'm learning Burgmüller on the piano, and have been "stuck" on three of the first four. No One is an exercise in pentatonics, No 2 is a minor chord song, and No 4 is a study in thirds. I've been transposing them into every key, and my piano teacher is happy. I also transposed the Prélude in C Major into other keys. That's my practice routine for now. Fingering is tricky, and learning minor scales isn't as easy as a Major. But it's easier now that it was several weeks ago. My teacher is happy I'm trying them on the ukulele also.
    Blues? That'll come. Merci for this video.

    Thanks for another nice video. I appreciate the encouragement and your reasoning. I've dabbled in and out of some different blues styles for 40 years. Been helpful, and enjoyable but I get drawn towards other types of music and don't feel I "nail" the blues consistently. I will say your video has me thinking that I should watch your blues videos and explore even more. I can definitely hear and feel the blues in my playing when I play other genres. Thanks again!

    Great information there. Music works when it creates an emotional response in a human listening to it. Play music to your dog or cat and it couldn't care less. That simple clash of the minor third against the major third creates that response in an awful lot of human brains and it's the blues players privilege to provide it.

    Validation! It sounds crazy but I don't learn full songs or licks or tabs and have tried to zero in on the instrument, blues and just study, play and have fun right there. It seems to work for me. Pretty sure I can learn and play what I want to at this point and maybe sound half decent doing it. Many thanks to you for your great tutorials.

      Dude, when I first started this channel and showed people how the blues works, it was my #1 comment. “Blues is more feeling than anything else… or Blues can only be felt in your soul to play it…or Not everyone can play the blues, it can’t be defined musically…. “It was so funny.

    Myth #2 is indeed controversial. I don't see an issue with ‘studying’ lots of licks rather than learning them parrot fashion. That’s what transcribing is for. Analysing how licks get created is a fine thing to do as long as you have a firm grasp of all the underlying theory - scales, chord tones, triads, landing notes, enclosures etc.. After all, we are told (by every teacher) that we must listen to the blues as much as possible to get familiar with the vocabulary. Those 100 licks guitar videos cut out everything that isn’t immediately relevant for the task e.g. vocals and song structure.

    Great talk as usual stitch. Just a comment on point 2. First off, Im a huge triad and caged guy, and that's definitely the approach i like to take on the instrument. But do you not think its worthwhile having a few stock blues licks in your vocabulary, particularly at the beginner/intermediate stage, providing you incorporate them into your playing and make them your own?

    • @StichMethodGuitar
      @StichMethodGuitar  4 місяці тому +1

      Yes and no, most guitarist and I do have “canned licks” and they do come from of course, learning songs, and these blues songs having similar approaches to their lead work. These licks are easy for us to retain because they are associated with the sound of the blues as we know it. But whenever I find myself playing these licks it is solely because I am putting together the scale and chord tones as I’m flowing and it just happens to overlay with these licks I learned. Not because I called upon the lick at that moment. I do notice when it happens because I came up with a blues lick on the fly with the feel, knowledge and flow, and it produced a well known blues lick. I do have a video in case you haven’t seen it about licks:

    Can’t learn soul and feel….. formulas are science…. Blues is more than that. Getting that feel is very hard. Don’t know if there is a formula or method for developing that.

    • @StichMethodGuitar
      @StichMethodGuitar  4 місяці тому +1

      Of course you can learn soul and feel… whoever convinced you of that just has a defeatist attitude. That saying is the same as “it’s not the notes you play, but the notes you don’t play”. Just sayings that really don’t have a place in music.

      You can only add feel when you know how to solo...........anyone that tells you to just play what you feel is talking out of their ass.........how do you feel your way into a dominant 7 arpeggio? How do you feel your way into a minor 3rd or major 3rd? How do you feel your way in to mixing major and minor pentatonics? There's a learning process to everything
