The reason they give Imotep the 'power' of immortality is to prolong his suffering. The scarabs would eat him quickly. The punishment was to have him constantly alive and awake, devoured over and over forever. Should he be freed, he would be able to act, and he was already a powerful sorcerer. Immortality was just the cherry on top.
It's also to keep anyone willing to 'resurrect' these evil-doers from doing it, I mean, who would knowing mess with a figure like that? Same as with the "cursed" Emperor's tombs, they were place to detract tomb raiders and thieves from entering them, those curses have a reason to be.

Interesting fact about that hanging scene it wasn't suppose to go that way for Brendan (and yes that was Brendan doing his own stunt) and he actually did end up hurting his neck and back and was almost really hanged, one of many stunts during this franchise he did that wrecked his body beyond repair.

I underestimated John Hannah at the time, maybe because in this movie he plays the typical clumsy but funny sidekick. But then I saw him playing Batiatus in the first season of Spartacus (and in the Gods of the Arena prequel) and I realized how good he actually is as a dramatic actor.
My (now deceased) wife, Debbie, and I viewed this one upon its original theatrical release, and since I currently own the DVD trilogy along w/ the Tom Cruise version and all of the 1930s through '50s franchise issues, this probably bewrays my strong interest in the series. @@klingkong9790 I really wanted to. The whole idea of bringing back all the Universal classic monsters in their own movies sounded awesome to me. The problem with The Mummy and the Dark Universe as a whole is that they dumped so much money into them. You don't need $200,000,000 budget and Tom Cruise to make good movies. He's doomed to be eaten alive for all time. A better plot hole question is where did the scarabs go when they open his coffin?
The funny thing is that with a different perspective people accept the concept without question. From the more familiar side we have Christianity with the belief of an eternal hell. By the same concept that is God cursing people with immortality for eternal punishment. Why doesn't he just actually end their existence?
My own explanation for the weird "granting" of power is this: Imhotep needed to be punished in the extreme because he attempted to resurrect the dead, which is dangerous to the living, and blasphemous to the gods of the dead. Because balance must always be maintained, the extreme punishment had to balanced with a dangerous set of caveats; and because the punishers are themselves transgressing in order to inflict punishment, they have to condemn themselves.
They wanted him to suffer unending torment. They made him immortal so the scarabs would eat him for eternity but he would never die. The bug power is a side effect of the immortality. Couldn't do the eternal torment without also giving him that, but they thought it wouldn't matter since he would be buried forever.
the curse was a punishment because by making him immortal, his agony was prolonged, and he would be unable to cross over to the other side, where the pharos mistress (not wife or daughter) was, thereby keeping them apart forever.
When you said the brother has a “ hittable “ face I had to laugh. My son calls it a “ punchable” face. And you are so right, death is the beginning and I’m a lot closer than you.😊

Aharon Ipale went on to play Seti I again in both "The Ten Commandments: the Musical" and "The Bible miniseries episode: Exodus". Arnold Vosloo's fear while being wrapped up was genuine. One of the extra's cloaks happened to be worn by Alec Guinness in "A New Hope". "Wait here. You guys are great, truly. This is one of the best movies ever made. Also, about the why they cursed him. His powers are a consequence of the punishment, this is why it was never done. They knew if they ever punished someone in this horrible way and the individual were ever resurrected, the curse would happen. The Medji took this risk as they felt Imhotep deserved such torment before death for killing the pharo and trying to bring back Anck-Su-Namun. Fun fact: Brenden did all of his own stunts. However, this also includes the hanging scene, which sadly was not a stunt per say. The stunt went wrong and he was actually hung for a few moments until someone realized what was happening. the beginning "why do that, wouldn't it be easier to kill him?" By doing that ritual to him his body/soul would never be able to rest, he would be in torment forever (assuming he never awoke), which what is punishment
Since you dove into the Mummy(1999), which by the way is a spectacular movie, would you guys be interested in reviewing some of the original Universal Monster movies? Drac, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Mummy...etc
The actual stunt with the noose is done with a harness using a double for the wide shots. The close ups are Fraser but the rope got too tight for too long and he got choked out. He was not seriously injured nor did he require CPR. It was just a simple blood choke, very common, however, he did get fed up and walked off set for the day.

Edit reason: spelling corrections and fun fact.
LOVE the library scene!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 "Give me flies! Frogs! Locusts!!! Anything but YOU!!! Compared to you the other plagues were a JOY!!" 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Also, 💘 Rachel Weisz 😍🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💗💗💗💗💗💗
RiP Winston 😭😭😭
4:02 It's easy to mistake 'seppeku' for 'sudoku' since they also sound pretty interchangeable! 😁
I remember seeing this film in theaters when it came out. Probably one of my fondest theater going experiences growing up. Perfect popcorn flick!
Absolute classic. The 90's were a different time for movies. Wish we were still there!
We need bugs in movies because Mrs Movies loves them so much 💗
7:05 That actor is Erick Avari and he was Kasuf in Stargate and three episodes of Stargate SG1.
the beginning "why do that, wouldn't it be easier to kill him?" By doing that ritual to him his body/soul would never be able to rest, he would be in torment forever (assuming he never awoke), which what is punishment
Yeah. He couldn’t get to the afterlife
This movie is such a classic.
Mrs "I hope a scarab gets him"
Me "Oh a lot of scarabs are gon get him" 😄
The beetles were the only thing in the movie I didn't like. Creepy ugh
This would be the movie that I fell totally, and irrevocably, in love with Rachel Weisz.
Have you seen The Bourne Legacy?
Brendan Fraser is also in Bedazzled (2000).
Since you dove into the Mummy(1999), which by the way is a spectacular movie, would you guys be interested in reviewing some of the original Universal Monster movies? Drac, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Mummy...etc
at 8:14..tries to tongue punch her in the squak box..
New business idea! I'm going to design a cat holster in case of mummies.
@4:04 Is seppuku and is always done on oneself since is a suicide ritual. Sudoku is the number puzzle game 😅
"You don't like sand?"
Come on Mrs. Movies! That was the perfect lay-up.
Good choice. This arguably is one of the more enjoyable films featuring a classic horror character. Young Frankenstein for me, is still the best.
The original mummy was also pretty decent
This movie is a classic. Seriously one of the best action movies of the era which 100% still hold up today.
I absolutely loved this movie as a kid! I remember my Mom dropping me and 3 friends to go see this in the Cinema for my 13th birthday
That's my favorite part "hahaha .. goodbye Benni ahhhhhh!" 🤣
9:09 No, I'm pretty sure he's going to scare a young portly boy with talk of large turkeys. :)
"I hate bugs."
"Welcome to You, Me, and the Movies. Today we're watching Starship Troopers."
Hmm.. this is like, the 3rd reaction to The Mummy I've watched this week... and they've all been awesome
so the jailer was played by Omid Djalili, a British based Iranian comedian and his routines are well worth checking out
And Brendan's other role:
George of the Jungle
That first jumpscare 🤣🤣🤣
"She Performed Sudoku on herself" BEST LINE EVER :) Love you guys
That jumpscare 07:16 was absolutely hysterical... 😂😂😂 epic reaction... 💯🤘
- *CATCH ME IF YOU CAN (2002)*
- *WIND RIVER (2017)*
Rewatching, and I don’t know if I commented before…
Gotta tell you Both, I lived in Egypt for more than a Month. Actually watched “the Mummy” on dvd there, right after it went on sale!
It is such a Beautiful place, the is high, but not overwhelming, it’s so dry and clear. Stepping on to the Pyramids, and going a little way in to them, is Such a life changing experience!!
19:00 the reason for giving that power(?) is to act as a deterrent for anyone to bring him to life.
My dad had something similar to a cat-pac, but it was cat-in-a-box, and we left it on my aunts doorstep, rang the doorbell, and ran.
The actor who played the mummy, Arnold Vosloo, was in both G.I. Joe movies, Hard Target, Darkman 2, Darkman 3, 1492: Conquest of Paradise, and Blood Diamond. You should any of those to your watch list, if you haven't seen them yet.
Also memory serves he played the first Dark Lighter in Charmed which is cool because our friend in these Audit Bi also played the major villain Zankou in Charmed.
“Bennnnyyyyy, you’re on the wrong side of the river!”
Girl when you said, there were more camels could she not ride her own. I was like girl, please it is brendan! I would love to be in his arms as evy hihi😜
Great reaction guys! This is one of my favorite movies ever made!❤
The fact that the meji dude is the gigolo from deuce bigalo is too funny to me i can't take him seriously anymore
