    Hi Pete, just watched your review of the Sigma 100-400mm x mount and decided to purchase this lens. I liked the review format, easy to understand and follow. I have become a Fujifilm shooter after moving on from Sony. I like the control the camera offers on my X-T5 and the X-Pro2 cameras I own. Color rendition is first rate with almost no changes needed to the jpg images I use.
    I found out we are neighbors. I live in Valley Stream, not far from your studio. Been watching and enjoying your You Tube posts for a while. Thank you so much for your insights and reviews, been a subscriber and follow your channel.

    Thanks for the review Pete, enjoyed it.
    I am rather impressed with Sigma quality and also find them in general better than other 3rd party lenses.
    Have a good one

    Thanks for the video! Such an interesting option for an upcoming trip. I normally shoot with adapted Nikon telephoto primes and enjoy the results (and get f/5.6 at 500mm). But this might be a good option for traveling light. Cheers!

      Glad you enjoyed it! I think it's a pretty great lens for the size and price.

    Hi Pete. I haven’t seen your channel before. Now subscribed. 👍🙂
    I’ve used this lens on a Sony A7RIV and it really delivers. About to get one on Fuji for my X-T5.
    Regarding A/F the 5 is a huge improvement. Tracking somebody on a zip line out to 200 metres with it and the Tamron 17-70 and then kite surfers with the Fuji 70-300 has delivered surprisingly good results.
    I think you are right, there is a tendency for Sigma lenses to deliver cooler colours. Balanced by crisp sharpness.
    The tripod mount from Sigma is a rip off. Amazon has after market for 1/3 of the price, or less.
    Looks like a cracking addition to one’s kit.

      Thanks for the sub! Good tip on the 3rd party tripod mount. I agree the Sigma is way overpriced!

    How about the Fuji 70-300 f4-5.6 for $800? It's quite a bit less bulky, and 1.2 lbs lighter! The Sigma with a tripod collar is almost $1100.
    With a 1.4 teleconverter, the Fuji would have a range of 98-420.
    I'm sure you've tested the Fuji 70-300, so I'd appreciate your opinion as to how the two lenses compare, for example in shooting your soccer game, birds, etc.
    I enjoy your relaxing style and informative reviews, so thank you.

    • @PeteCocoPhoto
      @PeteCocoPhoto  9 місяців тому

      Thank you! Actually, I have not tested the 70-300 Fuji lens. But I can tell you that a teleconverter is never going to be as good as a lens of the same range it replicates. Teleconverters make the focus much slower, decrease the light output, some by quite a lot, and sacrifice image quality.

    • @hpaula1946
      @hpaula1946 9 місяців тому +1

      I realize teleconverters are a compromise, but even without it, the Fuji 70-300 f4-5.6 is a 105-450 full frame equivalent, which should suffice for activities such as soccer games, etc. I don't know about birding, where I guess more is better. The Fuji 70-300 f4-5.6 is a very popular lens, and I think is worth testing out and worthy of consideration as an alternative to the Sigma 100-400. @@PeteCocoPhoto

    • @PeteCocoPhoto
      @PeteCocoPhoto  9 місяців тому +1

      @@hpaula1946 I agree there. But trust me, I tested the Fuji 50-140mm 2.8 and even on that super fast lens the teleconverter was a complete dog to use. The sharpness was horrible and af sucked too.

      @@PeteCocoPhoto I'm late to this party, not sure how I missed this video, I can agree about the TC situation, after editing a lot of RAW images from both the X-T3 and X-T5 with the Fuji XF 100-400 lens the 2X TC really degrades the images (that may be in part as the 100-400 is forced to use contrast detect autofocus with the 2X) but having tested in the studio on the X-T5 on a tripod in ideal settings with the focus nailed on, I found the images on the X-T5 were better without any TC and digitally cropping (since so many MP) than using either TC.
      I will add I have not used the lens or cameras outside of the studio (they were not mine i was just editing the files)
      But If I was going to purchase a 100-400 lens for myself, after using extensively the Sigma 23mm F/1.4 and 56mm F/1.4 over the last few months (well month for the 23mm) I'd have no concerns about getting this lens.
      At this price point it really is a choice though between the Fuji XF 70-300 & the sigma 100-400, the tri-pod collar should have been included but I understand why it is not to reduce the price.
      As you have stated that the lens performs really well on the X-T5 I can take from that it will most likely be even better on an X-H2s
      Keep up the good work

      I’ve tried Fuji lenses with TCs, including the 70-300. Bought a couple of TC and I wouldn’t use again. Sold them on.
      Too many optical compromises.

    Can we infer from the video that the third party lens you have reviewed in the past has better autofocus performance in both xt4 and xt5 than this one?

    • @PeteCocoPhoto
      @PeteCocoPhoto  10 місяців тому

      No the AF in this one is better. I was talking about the Tamron 150-600 which was not quite as snappy as this one.

    I don't think this video is a comprehensive review of the lens. We do not have any idea about its autofocus performance in bird and wildlife photography. There is no big deal in tracking people by continous autofocus. Can it track smoothly the fast flying birds? Have you made a bird in flight test?

      The beauty of the internet is that there are countless others writing and filming camera gear reviews. Sometimes, and I know this sounds crazy, I will watch 2 or 3, maybe even 5 reviews, of the same piece of gear in order to get a comprehensive idea of its performance. Cheers!

    I would not recommend this lens to those going for birding, at longer focal the softness is so unbearable from my xt5.
