  • Jim and Jonny turn a piece of wood into the new longthorne field stock and attach it onto a specially made action and barrels to create the NEW Longthorne Game Gun
We then take it for a test drive to see if our decisions were wise.

For most people, myself included, you go to a shop, handle a few guns and guess at what feels comfortable and useful. We don't take into consideration the thought, time and materials that has gone into a stock shape that works well for most people. But the process is extremely important and a beautiful thing to see.

I met Jim at the 2021 Game Fair when my mate dropped his own Longthorne into Jim to open the bores out a couple of thou to better suit clay loads, he really is a great bloke and a true gentleman with no airs and graces but just loves to talk guns, I could never afford one but if I could there would not be the slightest hesitation. Great guns made by a truly passionate gunmaker who has put modern method into a classic art form.

    Bravo Gentlemen!
It took some compromises on both of your parts. But this came together as a true work of art. This gun and hopefully future guns made like would be something anyone would be proud to unsheathe at a game shoot.
    Great video as always.

Longthorne riibless and move weight on barrel thickness. 30 inch barrels are perfect for an allround game gun. Open grip "Boss style" stock with tear drops and slim forend. Stock shall have the old slim woodwork. Rolled side on trigger guard. How about double triggers :-) A A Brown makes lovely wood for shotguns.

Great viedo on the intracatacies of stock design. At 29:55 it is mentioned that even less pistol grip woudl be ideal to have the arm resting in the right ready position. This ends up with almost a straight grip which they have used for 180 years. I have 25-30 Side bys and OUs and initially did not like the straight grips. After time I realized the ease of shooting one. I also have large hands and grabbing one is like shaking hands. I can shoot for hours with little fatigue. I also wanted to chime in that the shop designed gun was very elegant. Not sure about how rugged that very thin grip would be however. Grain selection for this stock would be hugley important. Thanks for this video and would appreciate your thoughts.

Many if not MOST "gun owners" vs somewhat serious shooters don't realize how much a long gun's comfort and FITMENT to the "individual" user (like a well tailored suit!) is paramount to how often you'll hit the target. This looks the dog's golden bollocks in that regard...👍

Yeah, I think I'd put away the rasp (and the power tools) before I add wine to the mix. ;-)
Funny, but if you go digging through photos of high grade Winchester & Marlin lever rifles, you're going to run into examples of grips similar to that. And with a lever, you've something which aesthetically wants to be a straight grip, but as you want to afford your gun hand a bit more control, you start heading in this direction. And it still checks the Aesthetics box. Nice job!

I thought you guys would whittle the stock down until there wasn't anything left!
There is a certain elegance in a slim sporting gun. With that comes the liveliness, dare I say twitchiness, that such guns have. Why shooting is often best as a sport than just mechanical; proves you are alive.
If it looks good then often it is. Gunmaking is a skill.
