Native Invader is an intense feast of melody, protest, tenderness and pain. In the summer of 2016, Tori took a road trip through North Carolina's Smoky Mountains. The intention was to reconnect with the stories and songlines of her mother's family, who were from the North Carolina and Tennessee Smoky Mountain area. That winter, two seismic events knocked the plan off its axis. The fall out from the US Election. And in January her mother, Maryellen Amos, suffered a severe stroke leaving her unable to speak.
The complex influence of America's alt-right Super PACs, lobbyists and think tanks informs much of the tension in Native Invader. "It wasn't going to be a record of pain, blood and bone when I began," Tori says. "It wasn't going to be a record of division. But the Muses 9 insisted that I listened and watched the conflicts that were traumatizing the nation and write about those raw emotions. Hopefully people will find strength and resilience within the songs to give them the energy to survive the storms that we are currently in". The sense of semantic distortion permeates Native Invader. Tori talks of the need to form a "militia of the mind" in the face of national lies.

I heard a song w harpsichord playing on tv one day back in like '96 on Mtv. It was being used for a background track on Road Rules or Real World. I desperately needed to find out who the singer was. Literally just a couple days later Tori's trailer for Unplugged popped up on the screen. She was playing Blood Roses on the harpsichord! I made sure to watch (and tape) it. Been a fan ever since. Over half my life. ❤

Oh yes indeed "Get you back to you..." that describes this song perfectly. The Tori that I adore. She doesn't doo this type of composition often enough. I already liked the other two songs I heard as well. I'm enthusiastic now because I haven't really liked one of her albums since Scarlet, and even that was lackluster compared with her previous efforts.

I love this song, it's the best I've heard so far, agreed! It's the most emotionally encompassing and sonically seductive song from this album cycle. Tori's music for me is the audio equivalent of a hug from a best friend. Every night I'm working a few certain pop star's concerts, I'm secretly wishing it was Tori or Bjork.

feel like im listening to a kate bush song, which is great having listened to pretty much every kate song on youtube im becoming bored of her songs and its such i shame she doesnt make music really anymore but a may have found a new artist which the style i love so much
For me, as Kate Bush's magic started waning in 1993, I then discovered Tori in 1994 with Cornflake Girl, and since then, it's been magic rekindled. Go back and start with Little Earthquakes.
Kate's first 3 albums really do it for me, I could listen to them forever.
I don't recall her ever sounding so much like Kate Bush, which I mean as a compliment to them both.
