I am 73 and will never forget Bruce Lee. I think everybody on the planet that seen him was affected in someway, usually positive. I know I wanted to be like Bruce Lee LOL. But as I matured realizing that I am not Asian and not even close to the skill set and charisma he had, he did inspire me to be the best person I can be and try to be the best at everything I did. He was a powerful and positive force in my life. Eternal Respect for the one and only Bruce Lee!
10,000 years from now Bruce Lee's name will still reign on ... he will be remembered by the future - he is the one and only Asian super hero the world has ever witnessed. I am so honored to have lived when Bruce was here - also i want to pay tribute to Mr George Benson the greatest living guitarist virtuoso that is still alive.
Same here. I remember opening up the paper and seeing his obit. I couldn’t believe it. Just kept staring at it , hoping I was imagining it. This was before we really knew how smart he was. Spent every weekend hitting the drive- in to check his movies. He’s a hero to millions.
Great interview. When growing up and watching Bruce Lee's movies, I only thought about the kick, punch, and all the good moves he made. Over time, upon reading his books and watching interviews, I learn that there is philosophy behind his martial art. His philosophy impacts my life as well as others'. Bruce Lee is a legend.
Same here. I watched Bruce Lee since I was a little kid going with my dad to his friends house. At that time I just like you was impressed by the punch and kick. I actually tried in real life, got into real fight with others but it didn't turn out so well. I ended up hurting myself and others.. now at one time when I was searching around the internet for "one inch punch" and I found Bruce Lee again and it hit me hard, like I was super impress. So I dig into his life history and books and especially his daughter Shannon on Instagram, I get to know more about his philosophy and now I see every punch, every kick, screaming, his physique has a lot more meaning behind them. And now I decided to get into marital art. Thanks to his legacy. Truly a Legend!
He sure was the father of the MMA. There was very little realistic fighting workouts involving martial arts. Boxing, yes. Sparing consisted of stopping kicks and punches short. A buddy of mine who boxed in the Marines brought his gear to the gym I was taking classes in. Me and another guy decided to go all out with the gloves and headgear, full contact. (This was in 1973). We couldn’t hit each other. Funny as hell. We were trained to stop short, and we couldn’t land a punch. Suggested to the martial art association I was with to apply JKD, they’d have none of that. Was breaking with the almighty traditions. Started reading books from Lee in Jkd. He had the right idea. Mix up the martial arts and train realistically. Took till 2015 to get a Jkd school near me. All the crap we were learning was setting us up to get our asses kicked. Too old for MMA now.
VERY articulate interview; James has such a warm, kind air about him. And, boy, he sums up so many things that make Bruce special to me-the open-mindedness, the martial spirit, the undeniable screen presence and energy, the believability combined with emotional content, the imparting of deep, important life lessons through the guise of entertainment-dude fucking nails it. And I love how the dog seems be sitting there at first like, "Jeez, you're talking about Bruce Lee again?" and then when he gets to The Big Boss, dog is like, "Okay, that shit WAS kinda dope."
Absolutely. He comes across very articulate and has so much appreciation for Bruce, it makes for a nice interview. He's one of those actors that just seems to pop up in every film you see, kind of like Al Leong. As for the dog, i really wanted to capture it in the thumbnail for fun lol , took a little time to get a good shot..
Are James and Al still active? For a while Al was like THE Asian henchman who'd put up a good fight then inevitably get killed by the good guy, lol. Just saw a trailer with Mark Dascacos and went, man, haven't seen HIM in awhile. Y’know, it’s incredibly sad there’ve been no Asian-American actors, action or otherwise, to fill Bruce’s shoes, but that just shows what a special, remarkable person he was. As Dan Inosanto said, "Maybe one day someone will come along with the physical skills, but the TOTALITY of the man? Probably not." And never mind his unique blend of science and philosophy, his art and writing skills, his deep knowledge of film-making that allowed him to tell a story through action like nobody else-the most important quality of all? His ridiculous, relentless, boundless DRIVE. Ultimately, I think, it led to his early death…but what a life was lived. Respect.
I purchase a book from James Lew back in the 70s and found him to be a very good martial artist good techniques and I'm happy that he was able to do his part to promote martial arts. He did a great job as the Korean fighter in the movie Best of the Best. He may never have reached the level of notoriety as Bruce Lee, but I think that he is one of the best examples of martial arts and Fitness.
Excellent interview. Thanks so very much for sharing. I like what James Lew said "Learning to fight so you don't have to fight" ...excellent perspective!
This guy.. this guy will never die, he started a thread that lives on in anyone who he and his energy comes in contact with.. hes basically like one of the family.
Out of all that I have heard in different interviews I am for the 1st. Time at a point where I feel I am as impressed as I Was with watching Bruce Lee & Brandon Lee growth and abilities before me like your 1st fireworks show. I think that anytime someone is to talk about our Legends
James never got to work with Bruce Lee, of course, but he did work with Brandon Lee in both Showdown In Little Tokyo & Rapid Fire:; it would be interesting to hear James' recollections of what that experience was like, & what Brandon was like, as well.
No mate , what the fact is , IS THAT BRUCE LEE REWROTE THE CONCEPT OF PERFECTION WITHIN ACTION CINEMATOGRAPHY ! BRUCE SET THE STANDARD AND HOLLYWOOD WAS FORCED TO FOLLOW Hence the producers prior to filming ENTER THE DRAGON had Bruce Lee walk away ... And they had to get Linda Lee to mediate And she told them ... " YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO BRUCE TO MAKE ENTER THE DRAGON THE BEST THAT IT CAN BE ! ! ! " She was correct ! Bruce was correct ! AND IT SET THE ACTION SCENE STANDARD FOR ALL TIME IN GLOBAL CINEMA PRODUCTION !
all the audio for action scenes in this vid is not Lee's voice. It's someone elses voice (to get Lee's voice for tower of death you have to get Way of the Warrior doc, for the real Audio of way of dragon you have to get the VHS cassette of it)
BRUCE LEE. WAS SO FAST , MOST CAMERAS 🎥 ONLY CAPTURE A BLURE !!!!! . THE CAMERA MEN 🎥 AND DIRECTORS , HAD TO TELL HIM TO PLEASE SLOW DOWN !!!!! . TECHNOLOGY BACK THEN COULD NOT KEEP UP WITH LIGHTNING BRUCE LEE. !!! . 😎😳😱👍💖🙏🏾😎....
To be more specific &technical, they had to increase the film speed. Film cameras run regularly at 24 frames per second. This is just the regular film speed of other martial arts movies. It was more expensive to film Bruce Lee's fight scenes. I think the largest reels of film were for about a little over ten minutes at regular speed. If you you look at his fight scenes, they're mostly made of short cuts put together
It's not about trying to make Bruce faster. It's for copyright purposes, it's not just the visuals but also the sound you have to take in consideration, hence why i use heavy filters on film footage, and speed up when the films sound is too long. It could be the difference between the interview being viewable worldwide or restricted worldwide.
antonio sevilla : BACK THEN 1960s-& 1970 s , BRUCE LEE FIGHTS HAD TO BE SLOW DOWN .!!! .THE CAMERAS 🎥 ONLY CAPTURE A BLURE .?"???. THATS HOW FAST BRUCE LEE , WAS. !!!!! . ( THATS WHY BRUCE , COLD BIT ANY MAN IN 60- SECONDS. !!!!! . ).. 😎👍💖🇺🇸👍🍷🙏🏾...
It should be obvious. I've mentioned why in one of the comments on this video before. In short, without it the video would be banned across many different countries, maybe all. The spliced in Bruce Lee clips are mostly irrelevant anyway, it's the actual interview itself that's meaningful.

I can relate to that
And there's the haters. Lol, they're so hilariously pathetically jealous.
James Lew is magnificent. I loved his book: 'The art of Stretching and Kicking'; one of my all-time favorites!
Bruce was unquestionably the father of MMA.
Bullshit!!! Mma has nothing to do with What Bruce Lee was working on
He sure was the father of the MMA. There was very little realistic fighting workouts involving martial arts. Boxing, yes. Sparing consisted of stopping kicks and punches short. thank you
Bruce Lee and George Benson shaped my life.
That scene where Bruce goes out at night to check out Han's island in Enter The Dragon could have George Benson's Give Me The Night as it's music!
we need to learn how to fight so that we don't have to fight. excellent james. i'll remember that.
Incredible interview sifu.
Thank you...
HE IS GOOD!
Congrats on the Emmy win Mr James Lew!!
This guy.. this guy will never die, he started a thread that lives on in anyone who he and his energy comes in contact with.. hes basically like one of the family.
And after all this time following Lee's magnetic, dynamic essence;
Still----there hasn't been ONE man who can truly compare.
I must been living under a rock. first time hearing this dude speak

Very good analogy James Lee. Bruce was more scientific. He applied science.
Miss Bruce Lee
This a great interview.
Devia ter uma entrevista assim com Maria yi
Sifu Lew great interview

Bruce Lee is the only Asian super hero we'll ever have - Hollywood would never allow an Asian guy to be a super hero they are racist towards us.
luckily we'll have shang-chi MARVEL soon
martial arts super hero I guess, 2 birds with a stone
Bruce Lee chose to underdog but he will beat living shit of his oppnt

Nice dog!!!
The finished made up game of death is an insult to bruce's talent and calibre.
I don't know whose idea was put that stupid effect and speed up those short clips with Bruce, but it sucks... otherwise nice interview
