Hi Gayle, Ive being trying to figure out the C part that Lester plays (on the lower G and D strings). Care to transcribe the sheet music? (I realize that's crazy to ask!) It seems different from other versions I've heard. This is first real bluegrassy song I've attempted.
I love old time music. I really enjoyed Lester doing this song. Thanks for sharing and to youtube for giving us the ability to make local music global.
What a great video! I can't describe how this made my day-- it took me back to my childhood, listening to my relatives play on their porch, up in a holler near Harlan, Kentucky.
About as divine as things get here! My great grandmother’s mother was Georgena McCumber so it’s great to hear a McCumber from beautiful West Virginia. We’ve got a tune called “Georgena McCumber’s” somewhere here on UA-cam that’s the story of our McCumber branch. Beannachd leibh-
My favorite fiddle rendition of BMR , no cherries, whip cream, just.pure great ice cream! Really miss you Lester but looking forward to another session in the great beyond!
Lester always cracks me up. Kim suggests a tune and he thinks that he might not be able to remember it, then in great Lester style, he knocks it out of the park!
My friend from West Virginia knows Lester. I would love to meet him someday. He is my favorite fiddler of all time. I just love the heck out of him. He is what it's all about! I listen to his videos all the doo da day! Thank ya for sharing!
Lester is one of the few who play this tune in G (with GDGD tuning). Most everybody else uses what is actually called Black Mtn Rag tuning -- AEAC#. Frankly, I prefer this the way Lester does it. But enough of old time music theory. This is a great video as we get inside Lester's home in Nicut. Please pass word along to Mr. McCumbers that we view his videos with much joy, and a sense of privilege. A five star Master!
Does anyone know how Lester tuned his fiddle? He certainly typified what we call old time fiddling. He has left a huge hole that will be hard to fill. Kim also lends just the right touch to Lester's fiddle. Really glad she got him to play all those old tunes for us. Thanks for this posting!!
This guy kicks ass. And he must have ribs of steel - I guess if it's comfortable for him - most people with that sort of hold are old-timey but seriously suck, but he's great, so whatever he does works.
Believe it or not, Lester was my uncle and I can't believe I found him on here. So nice listening to him.
Mine too. McCumbers here.
@@disturbedkitty69 one of the best days of my life was spent there with my brother and I picking with lestet
This is my FAVORITE version of this tune !!
this is why I love America!
Rest in peace Lester. It took me three months to learn your version and I'm so sorry that I'll miss you at Clifftop.

Listen and study these old-timer's music well, we're losing them all.
Look up Collette Fournier in RI. She’s the top fiddler there. Has been a teacher for the RI Council On The Arts.
Wonderful!!

He plays a bit like Bill Birchfield & Joe Birchfield of the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers.
Banjo relegated to off camera,! 😢😢
What tuning is Lester in here? It doesn't sound like regular Black Mountain Rag tuning.
GDGD?
I love this hillbilly music.
