Building A Log Cabin | Ep. 48 | A Christmas video! + Varnishing the floor and installing a toilet!

- Welcome to our channel! This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. Our goal is to build a tiny log cabin from scratch using as much material from our land as possible. We are building it entirely using hand tools (no chainsaw!). This cabin will function fully off-grid and will be only accessible by foot. Subscribe to follow our journey!
In this episode, we bring up our compost toilet and drill a hole into our floor to pass the ventilation tube. We also varnish our first floor with 3 coats of oil-based varnish to protect the white pine boards. We install a more permanent door-stop molding and seal up some cracks. We then decorate for Christmas by making an evergreen wreath and putting some lights in a small Christmas tree. We finish up by sharing with you the story of when we first met and what our Christmas eve tradition is.
We are learning a lot as we are doing (as always), so don't hesitate if you have any questions, it will be a pleasure to share tips and tricks, if possible.

You Canadians, you're so used to ice you don't even need skates to skate. That little clip was actually really cool. Probably saves time and energy traveling along the frozen creek too.
What could be better than a newly finished floor, a toilet almost ready for use, a door jam properly aligned, skating on ice without skates and a chocolate and fruit fondue celebrating 4 years together. Life is grand. Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing your life's adventure.

You will remember this Christmas for the rest of your life. I have so enjoyed watching you two work together. I hate to see this play list come to an end. Often when I'm binging to catch up on a new channel, I will speed it up, but yours, I watched and enjoyed every minute with you. In just a couple of days I have lived a couple of years of your life with you and I must say it was a pleasant experience. And your video making skills are quite good. I notice a lot of how you put your vids together that most people will never realize if they don't make and edit videos. You know how to tell the story without words. No easy task. Your many camera angles always lend to the flow of the story. So good. What you two have done with simple hand tools is rather astonishing in this day of rat race got to get it done yesterday with a minimum of effort mentality. I've come to love you both!! Now I'm stuck having to wait between vids lol! But I'll look forward to them.

what an awesome way to show your love to others by how you two react to each other. I have watched all of your videos the most amazing thing, how peaceful you two are toward each other. As I see others' comments something is absolute and that is the positive effect you two have on others. So congratulation .you built a beautiful cabin which has your hard work and the love that you put in with patience, and respect for maela by allowing her to participate ( most men don't have that patience. as an unfortunately I am one of them. Great job on your new place!! One thing you might consider is if you raised your water catchment system on a platform, top just below the gutter, the water would gravity feed to your sink and bathroom without the need for a pump and no need to refill the container below the sink. Frohe Weihnachten, einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr sowie recht viel Gesundheit euch beiden. Für eure Eingangstür hätte ich zwei Vorschläge. 1. Im Türsturz ein kleines Vordach und im unteren Türblattbereich auf der Außenseite ein Abtropfprofil fürs herunterlaufende Regenwasser. Der "horizontale" Schenkel sollte über die Leiste im Türschwellenbereich herausragen, damit das Regenwasser gut abgeführt wird.

Question... When attaching each row of wall logs in each corner with wooden dowels, how do you avoid hammering each dowel into the previously hammered dowel beneath it?
What size auger bit and dowel did you use?

...all of us who are making the off grid move and building log cabins very much appreciate the valuable information you two are giving us.
The dowels are about 1" in diameter. To avoid hitting the bottom dowel, we would roll the log back over or lift it up to see about where the dowel is, then just aim the top dowel to try to miss it. Sometimes we did go into the bottom one though haha
