The command group is a wargame artefact. Officers would normally be at the end of a rank or out of the ranks, before or behind. Drummers would usually be grouped behind the unit. The colours would be together. One of the best things about the Epic strips is that the men are realistically shoulder to shoulder. The "Foundry basing" used by most gamers is far too open.
Thanks for the unboxing! I know they are pricey and these are in metal but I can’t help but loving this range of minis! I think I’m lucky that I’m invested in 28mm currently otherwise I would be spending ALOT on this
Ah I can understand if you’ve already got 6mm, without these I’d have looked at 6 or 10mm, these have the small scale feel, but the detail of larger scales which I like - means they’re much slower to paint though 😂 Where are you based if you don’t mind be asking, I detect a West Country accent?
Thought you must be close to that area. I’m only up in Gloucester, so if you fancy trying them out one day (once I’ve finally painted enough for both sides) let me know.
News from Warlord’s open day has show these will be available in plastic on a multi-troop frame soon, not sure when though. Will be trying to get hold of some to review.
Wow, so I just got a shock. I was going to buy the Zouave box set from Warlord. I went to checkout to calculate shipping. To the U.S. it's $25.00!!!! I know there has been a sharp increase in UK shipping rates over the past recent weeks and months, but those shipping rates surprised me. I just can't justify paying that much for one small box. I also checked Kallistra to try to get some of their Zouave packs. To get six packs it would cost 17.50 pounds or about $22.00. For a package the size of a small book not weighing more than two pounds at the most. Hopefully something will change in the future but those shipping rates just price me out of getting anything from Warlord or Kallistra right now.
It’s got crazy lately, perfect storm of Brexit (now that we don’t ship as part of EU terms to you) and Covid. I’m pretty sure you can get them in independent US stores though, I’ve seen a few posts in Facebook groups and other videos where they’ve got them from their local games stores or online ones like Miniature Market.
Not sure if UA-cam will delete the link, but I’ve shared one to the Zouaves in Miniature Market. You will probably know more places where they might be cheaper.
I think if they were doing now they would have, much of this range was a bit of a test to see how it went and sold. The Napoleonic range is benefiting from what they learnt.
Agreed, wish is wasn’t so often replaced with cheap resin though. Good non rubbery resin I like, plastic preferred (but expensive for companies), but I’m not too unhappy not to be dealing with ‘Warlord Resin’ here.
The only thing putting me off is the union flag sheet, it forces you to paint specific regiments and the sheet only has enough flags for one starter set with no extra options on standard infantry
I’m not sure why there’s so few compared with Confederates, bit of a head scratcher. There’s lots of other places you can get flags though, I’ll not be sticking with just the ones you get.
Oh man. This one is problematic to me. I was so hoping and expecting the Zouaves to be in plastic. Having bayonets on models that small is a huge hassle. I mean maybe I'm wrong, if you can get them straightened out by only bending them once or twice they should stay solid. But wow, for the sake of sturdiness and preparation plastic would have been so much better. I am still probably going to get this box simply because of the amazing value and number of models though. Thanks for the review!
Sadly I think the only plastic planned for this range was only ever the standard sprue, I guess they don’t expect the returns to match the cost of plastic tooling required to make plastic miniatures at this scale. Resin would be nice if it was good quality, but after my experience with the limited edition generals I think I’m happy with metal (which I don’t say often). I’ll most likely cut the bayonets off, the plastics look good without them, it always looks janky at smaller scales I think.
@@MiniatureRealms I think cutting off the bayonets is a great idea! That will eliminate having to constantly worry and fiddle them during assembly and painting, and also worry about them breaking during gaming. I will do the same. Historically it works too, since they did the vast majority of marching and fighting with their bayonets unfixed.
@@MiniatureRealms Having seen this unboxing I’ll be taking off the bayonets too. I’m happy with them being metal as I’m not convinced about resin, from any manufacturer.
Definitely think it’s the way to go to stop them looking odd. I’m a big fan of high quality resin, the kind that Forgeworld use, it’s strong and cleans up well. The cheaper plastic/resin is often rubbery and doesn’t clean up, or cheaper resins that are too brittle are terrible.
Really don’t understand why some box sets in this range are plastic and some metal. Would’ve preferred if they were all in plastic. Command figures are also metal.
It was a cost based thing, and ACW became a bit of a test of concept for this project. The cost of tooling plastics is huge, they talked about £20k per frame (I don’t know how accurate this is, but I think we can accept it’s a huge upfront cost compared to metal or resin), so you need to be sure to see a lot to get a return on investment. This is why we saw the one frame that was used for both sides, then pretty much everything else in metal. The Epic Waterloo range is different as by the time it went into producer the knew the concept worked and people should buy it based on the Epic ACW success. If they’d known how well it would have done all of ACW would have been plastic as well. Just ones of those things sadly, but they’ve mentioned re-releasing the ACW cavalry in plastic, so something to look out for.
I think there’s a chance they will be in Siocast (Warlord resin), but I’d rather have them in metal in that case, as that bendy resin can be hard to clean up.
Excellent review mate, look forward to seeing these all painted up 👍
Cheers dude, these will be a nice change to paint, looking forward to having a go.
These guys look great would be tempted if my old eyes could pick out any detail, lol, all the best, Garry
😂 luckily most of the detail is picked out with Contrast paint, but I have a handy magnifier for when my eyes are tired.

I wondered if they might be a little too close together (as much as I like them), but that’s good to hear, thank you.

You should do both scales, think of all the campaigns you can do with small actions in Sharp Practice, leading to bigger games in BP 😜
@@MiniatureRealms I already have some 6mm haha I am very tempted though I must admit. Maybe sometime in the future I will pick some up

Wish they had produced these in hard plastic the same as the line infantry.....

Metal is antiquated and slowly but surely on the way out. Cannot wait for the day we don't have to paint metal ever again

Would have been much easier
