Wild that they did not include a Cult of Ulric when they are setting the game at a time when the support of the cult was so important to those trying to set themselves as one of the multiple emperors.
It does seem odd at first, but I’m guessing it’s because they think the main army list can handle it quite well with the addition of Teutogen Guard etc. We also don’t know how the Knightly orders army of infantry might work, so that might include multiple flavour rules like the old ones in this video. It’s potentially a way they could cover more in one list idea, but we will have to wait and see I guess. We may get a more detailed list for them later on as well. If they move the narrative toward the Great War against chaos, they could appear then.
Interesting to see the pictures from the old White Dwarf mags. Look forward to Empire being released for Old World and seeing wht they will come out with as I am sure we will get more than what they have shown us so far.
I absolutely adore going back through the old WDs, and have gone a bit mad replacing all the ones which disappeared when I moved house in 2007 (i.e my parents threw them out!) I don't know if you've noticed but I thought it was funny how you can literally see the Grim Dark take hold just going off the colour of the issues, moving from the bright red, yellow and blues of the 90s into purples then black spines around issue 250!
I still have the 6th edition Empire book from when I was 12 I think. Loved pouring over the Nuln army pictures in there and now I’m conflicted on my original plan of re-painting and painting all my 6th edition troops as a Westerland army… It seems like the answer is I’ll need to paint at least two Empire armies.
GW did an official book some time ago named 'Warhammer Uniforms & Heraldry of the Empire' which shows diagrams of all the different uniforms per city state.
@@MiniatureRealms If you think that's expensive, just try and get yourself an original copy of 4th edition Chaos Dwarves army book, ebay shipping for that will take 10 days to the UK even as the owner has to retrieve it from the safe vaults of the Bank of England.
@RolandoRatas I can imagine 😂 Though if it’s overseas shipping using Global Shipping Program the seller doesn’t set that, eBay do, and it’s always crazy high.
I posted the paint parts of the knight article to the big Facebook group and people really seemed to like it - I think people are pretty excited for Empire even if their rules aren’t the most competitive
This was a lovely look back, i really hope the new Nuln army isnt as boring as the old one, which in my experience leaned hard into pure gunline with MSU handgunners with longrifle champions and artillery for days.
Thank you, I love looking back at old WDs. I think the writers have kept them pretty interesting so far, so I have some hope it will work work better than that. 🤞
Everyone views these things in perspective of when they started - so here I go. I was (am) a historical guy but I fell in with a group that had just started playing WFB 4th edition but with their 3rd edition armies and I sat thru hours of "In 3rd edition this..." and "3rd edition that..." The Empire figs looked historical enough for me so I took over one guys army for my duration with the group. I bought the 4th Ed Empire Army book and a huge pile of figures but I was never really inspired... Years go by and I snag most of the 3rd edition rule books in used bookstores, etc and one day I find the 3rd Ed "Warhammer Armies" ` and in it I found the Empire Army I'd fallen in love with; no puffy sleeves, no cartoonish Electoral Counts, no goofy war machines but lots of Knights from robber barons to Templars, lots of infantry with mock German names , individual heraldry, and kind of a vague medieval vibe - anywhere from 13th to 15th century because that's what the contemptuous Citadel catalogue contained. The line drawing at 03:00 in your video shows a Templar with a 13th century great helm that would be regulated to Brettonia today but was perfectly acceptable as Empire back in the day. I wish you could have gone a little further back, but I did enjoy the trip back through the WDs .
I started with 3rd ed and progressed to 4th all that long after, I remember all the army lists and miniatures you mention well. You’re so right about the aesthetic change, I imagine the originals (being Perry sculpts) were pretty much just them sculpting historical miniatures for use in fantasy, actually I think they’ve said as much. I can guess that’s why you were attracted to them. I did consider starting earlier, but because they were so different back then it didn’t fit the ‘loose topic brief’ 😂, I was tempted though.
Good to see some Old World back in WD. It'll take waaay more like in these beautiful old mags for a sub but I did pick up the same issue with the 4 gamers. Grudgebringers were my fav Empire mercs, though I don't think they ever made it from PC gaming into the official rules. Just had a more rugged and battle hardened feel to most empire and maybe something more like mercs would be in current timeline. It's what I'd do with my own Empire in any case. EpicTabletop did some fantastic narration and models.
Thanks for doing the legwork on the historic empire back catalogue! I never kept my old White Dwarfs which I'm definately bummed about, so it was interesting to see what you managed to dig out. I think there might be an online vault of White Dwarfs if you subscribe to Warhammer+ - but I don't, so I haven't got access to check!
I’ve not checked the vault for a while actually, when I last looked it was a sporadic array of issues rather than a full catalog (the online reader is super slow as well), there’s quite a few issues out there in other places as well.
It will be very interesting to see what does see a return even if it ends up as MTO. The old white dwarf mags sure were extensive in what they were willing to show you, obviously not the whole thing of the empire army book but a decent portion of it all the same. Wonderful trip down memory lane in your video 😀 That new special character looks very interesting for mercenaries as he removes any chance of them misbehaving so they can just be like the rest of your army (imperial dwarfs, ogres etc here we come!)
@ certainly sounds like an interesting mix having him as your general for Nuln. Gunline and mercenaries mixed together. I’m thinking imperial dwarf spearmen, cannons etc
Well I guess you could find parts that most resemble them I guess, more helmeted heads and chest armour etc. They’re very versatile kits, so nor a bad idea to try at all.
Nice video! I remember a White Dwarf with an empire conversion guide in it, using the at the time new plastic great sword kit. Did you come across this one?
Thank you. I think I may have missed that one, or I don’t have it. I have most from around issue 80 to when it went weekly, a few after that as well, but there are some gaps.
Attempt 3 in posting a reply; great video! I agree with most of your sentiments. Are you aware of this tome: "Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay: Up in Arms" it has a lot of information on mercenaries in the Old World and all the Knightly Orders of the Empire including whether they field demigryphs or not.
It’s great isn’t it, I think I got it as part of the recent Humble Bundle deal (that or I already had it), it was really helpful for my Knight of the Blazing Sun tutorial.
Reading as a kid issue 147 with the Empire Army lists was the issue that sold me on the Empire army, been in love with them ever since.
White Dwarf had such a huge impact on me like that as well.
Thank you for the video, looking forward to the Old World release of Empire.
I can’t wait 😂
Thanks for sharing! Brings me back to those great times!
🙂
Another cracking video. I do like a look though old publications for some inspiration. Looking forward to the Empire release

Oh yes for sure, there’s always a few little extras
I still have all my old White "Dworfs", also the General's compendium before it was sold out, a timeless gem of a book.
It’s a great one for sure

You really can, it’s stands out so clearly when you see them as a collection.
I did a similar thing replacing my old WDs around 12 years ago.

Yes it’s awesome, like a fool I got rid of about 10 years ago.
It's a Damn pricy book these days .

I wish pikes were an option because it would make the warlord/perry kits available as cheap/nice options for state troops.
Would look amazing as well

I get that feeling as well, even for those not playing them, Empire is the heart of the old world and it feels right when they’re there.
This was a lovely look back, i really hope the new Nuln army isnt as boring as the old one, which in my experience leaned hard into pure gunline with MSU handgunners with longrifle champions and artillery for days.
Gun lines are boring and I was a Dwarf player back in the day!

Yeah I pick up the odd issue of WD these days, it can never compete now with the internet, but fun to have a flick through regardless.
I just found your channel and I love it. And I'm also called Stuart which is fun.
Warmest welcome to another Stuart, glad you’re enjoying the channel 🙂
Another great video!
Thank you 😊
I've always regretted losing all my minis, books and magazines from the late 80s. Pity.
I feel you there, especially the books now, they were crazy expensive/hard to replace.

@Svengar I’ve already been working on some ideas along those lines (need to order some Imperial Dwarfs (which will be expensive 😅).
Those really take me back, I wish I still had my white dwarfs :(
It the one army I regret selling off myself
I must admit im so very tempted to turn my Empire Spearmen into Pikemen .
That would look very cool
@MiniatureRealms i know the perrys were heavily inspired by pike and shot for the Empire so it sould make sence
its possible to use state troops and missile kits to make nuln ironsides from forge world?
Well I guess you could find parts that most resemble them I guess, more helmeted heads and chest armour etc. They’re very versatile kits, so nor a bad idea to try at all.
Most of the War Wagon weapons have Old World rules but the man catcher sounds like Killing Blow?
Yes you might be right, will be interesting to see how it compares with the new rules.
@ Monster Slayer would be spicy!
@mjhsinclair It would be fun for sure
