Saba: Our parents, parents from the south. Fun Fact: He is referencing the great migration in America that occurred during the 1930's, 1940's, and 1950's. A lot of black people moved from the south to places like Chicago, for better opportunities. Respect to Saba.
I think he's also referencing the more recent "reverse great migration" as statistically speaking black people are moving back to the south for better economic and social opportunities. Most black people in America percentage-wise live in the South. Also, besides California, there's warmer weather. :)
This nigga is so talented it’s unbearable how underrated he is. Such beautiful music man. A top 5 lyricist with the ability to produce his whole album.
Those warm gentle guitar chords, the lofi-like kicks and snares and Saba's voice and smooth flow combined with the gorgeous lyrics just make me tear up every time I hear the song. Makes me very nostalgic because I can relate, even though I am not from Chicago. Beautiful song, and amazing album
Rarely will you have an artist like this have incredibly fantastic, catchy, lyrically creative, and just overall good songs on his only two records. Stop sleeping on this man!

Short story relating to my experience with this song: On a flight from Chicago back to Vegas about a month ago (couple days after the ‘You Can’t Sit with Us’ release/listening party), I was sitting next to a sweet lady from the west side and we got to talking about some Chicago stuff. Her son was a rapper. He was killed on the west side by gun violence. He’s my age. I’m 27 now. She moved to Vegas to get away from it all a few years ago. She had set up plans for her younger son to come out to Vegas to be with her. 2 days before his flight, he was shot and killed. This poor woman has suffered such loss; I could not begin to truly fathom that pain. I found myself at a loss for words at some point and just squeezed her hand for a few seconds. I had been listening to SMILE on repeat and writing to it, and decided to ask her to listen to it. She accepted and after she was done, she just said “It’s good, I like it”. A few seconds later she began to cry softly, quickly drying her tears and regaining her composure. Saba, your music speaks to people and touches peoples’ souls. Thank you for everything. I hope I get to meet you in person someday. You are truly an inspiration and role model. -Andrew
It mean he’s on J.coles Dreamville album. So I would say he’s up there. Artists this good usually don’t get millions of views each song they drop. Just how it is

I thought he was referring to slavery since the south part of the U.S was the only region of the country where slavery was legal at that time

This song has such a good vibe to it every time I hear it I just want to smile and dance
That chorus and piano roll are beautiful
"Sweet West Side Chicago" gotta be the beat opening to a song. The nostalgia is so crazy that I’m reliving memories I don’t even have.
