“Characteristically unreflective” is so spot on. And Saagar, even more accurate is, “Why we were elected to and WOULDN’T”.
These two have a seemingly unique ability to pick apart and articulate the nuances of politics in a way I have never seen in news before. Also learned about anwar al-awlaki today thanks to Saagar too :(

Who defines "good" policy? Most policies are good for a few but bad for most of us like the bank bailout.
Obama also "had the votes" the first two years of his presidency.
I think his argument is that there was a major financial crisis during those two years, so very few expensive measures could be taken.
And, that is why he was able to lead us out of the 2008 Republican lead crash.

I saw an interview with a young black woman who supported Trump and they asked her "why?" Her answer was extremely telling, she said, "I don't want to be a victim forever, and I want to feel proud about the country where I live." That makes perfect sense to me. I don't think we need to make stuff up - we can just ask them, and show respect by taking them at their word when they tell us.

Analogy to prior presidents doesn’t hold. The evidence that bipartisanship is more difficult now is pretty strong. Who was JFK and LBJ’s Mitch McConnell, for example?
Most of the people from that era lived closer to the public and you had to mix with them to get their votes. Nobody owed them their votes, they had to earn them. These days you're either with them or you're stupid, uneducated or in the basket of deplorables and deserve to be looked down on.
