I imported a US Super Game Boy for my SNES when they first came out, got Space Invaders for it, turns out it's bloody region locked >.> So it's not only the smallest SNES game, but the only region locked Gameboy Game.
I just looked that up, and you're totally right = The only "Game Boy" game to be region locked. Thinking about it, that makes a little bit of sense - They'd have to implement both NTSC 60Hz and PAL 50Hz code in that limited Game Boy cart space.
Great video being so in depth with alternate borders within games and loved hearing the Mario Picross puzzle theme behind the opening especially. I like to play a round a day and always feel like the game and tracks on it don't get that much attention. The first game's opening theme has no right going as hard as it does lol
I have a SGB and use it now and then to play GameBoy games. I always thought it's sad you can't link it up. I'm really looking forward to the next part of this. Great work!
Thanks - Next week will be a shorter episode, but I may be adding some extra episodes to show off some of the borders and other bits and bobs for the Super Game Boy 1 & 2 :) It is odd that there wasn't a link port on the original model, but thinking about it - I don't recall the link ability to be particularly popular before the release of Pokemon. It wasn't really something most Game Boy owners even bothered with.
The Super Game Boy is my favorite peripheral of all time. I owned this, without owning a Super Nintendo-- I had to go over to my grandparents' to play it on theirs. But it was worth it. I really enjoyed messing with the color schemes. For example, showing only a single color in Donkey Kong so that when you were creating a temporary platform, the entire map disappeared and you had to place the platform by memory. In fact, I did that in a let's play. Actually, I've done several let's plays on the SGB, making sure I took advantage of its features when I could. If only games had taken better advantage of it. So many games were lazy about their color schemes, changing the four shades of grey to four shades of a different color instead. Donkey Kong showed that, with planning, you could have multiple colors onscreen without it looking ugly. But perhaps it was that need for planning that prevented developers from putting in that effort.
+Draygone Fuzzbottom Now that's hardcore SGB usage! :) It really is a shame that this peripheral was so underused. I revisited the topic for a magazine article recently, and it's just insane the amount of potential this peripheral had. As you say, many developers likely thought it was too much effort. But, those who have one can be happy it existed, and at least Nintendo have carried on its legacy in various ways :)
+Samuel Baugh Awesome, thanks for watching and subscribing - Celebrating gaming in a positive way, is exactly what this channel is all about, so enjoy!
Hey Pug. I Don't have anything to add to this vid, just thought I'd share my love for the Super Game Boy. I loved mine. I Remember just sat playing with the palette for ages. It made some games more playable too, thanks to not having to deal with crappy lighting or the refresh rate of the GB. Awesome peripheral of its time. Subbed.
+Neffers I wanted a SGB with a SNES when it came out, but it was sold out at the time. Didn't get one until my wife bought me one a few years ago, and I was hooked! Thanks for subscribing!
Thanks :) It really is one of the best peripherals for any console, although I didn't get one at the time, it was initially selling point for me getting a SNES - Sadly it was sold out when my parents went to get my console :(
Never had one, always wanted one, just about to buy one for myself as a Christmas present. Large Screen Links Awakening is something I've coveted for a long while.
Great video, I played a lot of Donkey Kong Land on my Super Game Boy as a kid just for the cool border. as well as spending far too long drawing pictures all over the game.
Thank you! I never had the original DKL, but I did have the second and third games on Game Boy. Playing them now, I can't fathom how I could see what was going on, on that tiny Game Boy Pocket screen! :) Did you draw anything in particular, or was it just random doodling? It's such an odd feature!
I know this is an old video, but, with a vcr you could record your background with the game blank and then press play/pause on the vcr and boot up the snes and use your recorded background
+Nintendo Arcade cheers mate! The Game Boy Commander is a very interesting pad, especially with how it works with the Super Game Boy, so it should be a good episode! :)
I loved my Super Game Boy, I got the most use out of it when I let my one friend borrow my GB and my copy of Pokemon Blue, while I played through Red on my SGB (don't worry, he was a good guy and returned my GB to me when he was finished) I recently went out of my way to track down a bunch of Game Boy games that had SGB features, since I didn't have many growing up. Wario Land 2 and Mole Mania have some awesome borders that change every chapter/world, which is a bit nicer than the ones that just have static images. Does the original Link's Awakening have the special border? Or is it only the DX version?
+First Second Thanks for sharing your SGB memories :) Only the DX version is Link's Awakening has borders (the original game being released before the SGB)
+Captain N Thanks! I've definitely had a greater appreciation for the peripheral after making these three videos (and it was a good excuse to play some Game Boy games!)
Pug Hoof Gaming The Game Boy player has a few benefits too, like GBA support, and in Super Mario Land, the falling blocks in 1-3 are colored differently from the other blocks that stay still
Amazing video, so informative and has encouraged me to reuse and play my Super Game Boy again. I can't wait to watch the other vids. Top stuff and keep up the amazing work.
I have a Super Game Boy but can't remember the last time I ever used it properly. I did plug it into the Super Famicom to see if it works. It does to a degree but the games don't quite play properly. Time to invest in a SGB2 :)
My favourite thing about the Super Gameboy was that it played Pokemon in colour way better than the GBC did. This isn't true for Gold and Silver, but Red and Blue were much more coloured on the Super Gameboy. The GBC just gave them either a green or blue pallet everywhere from what I recall. Much more limited, and didn't colour the battles properly.
That's right, and you can see the results briefly in this video. The Super Game Boy was able to separate the screen into areas and apply a palette to those individual areas. Meanwhile, the Color just applied a basic palette to the entire screen. Clever stuff!
Ahh, so that's how that works! I never had any idea. Thanks for the reply! btw I subbed halfway through this video, and I've never subbed after watching one video before. Great stuff, and I'll be looking forward to more!
+OakTea Wow, thanks - That means a lot! Not a bad time to subscribe - Ive settled into a weekly schedule, plus I've got quite a few videos published at this point, so there's a nice backlog for you to watch :)
For the Super Game Boy, is it possible to make your own custom color palette. Where you pick 4 different colors of your choosing and then you can use that particular palette for your game. Also it would be nice if there were a battery save on the Super Game Boy because it doesn't seem to remember the custom color palette that I choose, but instead each time I play the game I have to set the custom palette.
Subscribed! I have a question about your video editing. How did you get the background to mirror the gaming screen? Do you use two video layers? Thank you for making these videos!
Ah, so in the early days, I would just make a duplicate copy of the game footage, add a Gaussian blur and scale up the size (and also crop and add a drop shadow to the main game footage to help it stand out.) These days, I’ve rigged up a series of Effects in using Motion 5 that does the whole thing for me in one click (I have multiple versions as each console requires different crop settings).
+Gungho73 thanks! I just updated my Nintendo playlist, so there's over 60 Nintendo related videos for your viewing pleasure :) That reminds me, I must do a playlist of all the videos I did during my NintendoLife days!
+K Diz Video Gaming “KevTastic” Cheers mate! I'm excited to get the other parts up, plus I have a few bonus videos on the way as well to elaborate on some of the topics in each part :)
When I got mine I was very disappointed there was no 2 player, that's what I wanted most. And the colours could have been better but the earlier weren't designed for it so don't look that great on it but other early games had good colours.
Was space invaders bundled with the super gameboy at all? Everyone I know in Australia with a super gameboy has the game and mine also had it too but wasn't purchased brand new.
Yeah, I'm guessing retailers around here just upsold a lot of people with the "Advanced SGB Features!" Considering I don't know anyone in person who just has Space Invaders without an SGB.
Nice video! As a big fan of the SGB, I knew almost everything in here but there were some nice little factoids in there. I want to get a CIB US copy as I already have the Jap SGB 1 and 2. Would be nice to have the original manual in English and I could put the extra codes and such in the box on a card of some kind. I actually just posted a video of the underclock mod and switch I did to mine. Very low production quality but should be informative to those who are interested!
Pug Hoof Gaming I would be honored if you did, fair sir! Haha it is indeed a very "home video" shot on a real potato of a cam/Mic set up (muh phone) but there should be some useful info for those interested in doing the mod.
I had a question. I have an original super gameboy. I know it will not play clear carts. Will the super gameboy 2? Also i have a gb flash cart(also clear) that will not work on the original super gameboy as well. Would that work on the super gameboy 2 and if not; is there a work around? I would appreciate your response asap. Not many people to talk about super gameboy with out there. Thank you and yes i am newly subscribed. Your video editing and commentary are seemless. Very nice!
So when you say “clear carts” I’m assuming you mean carts meant for the Game Boy Color - The SGB 1&2 only play original GB games (or black Game Boy Color carts that are backwards compatible). If your flash cart is designed for Game Boy Color (or you’re running Game Boy Color ROMs), that won’t work, I’m afraid (but they should work on the GameCube Game Boy Player). I hope that helps, thanks for the kind comments!
Ive seen all the 3 videos, but there is 1 piece of info I could'nt get from them... the number of possible colours at once is 10, but how about the total mount of colours? How many of them
Well, 10. The Super Game Boy can use multiple palettes of four “colours” for different portions of the screen. For example, the map screens of Donkey Kong ‘94 can use four palettes of four colours at once (but as only 10 colours can be used, those palettes share some of the colours). I hope that makes sense?
And if the question was how many colours of the SNES’s possible colours can be used, don’t quote me on this, but I think you can theoretically use any one of the system’s 32,768 colours.
@@PugHoofGaming thank you so much for aswering :) yeah, thats why I wonder about the total, like the actual "palette" , because I keep reading that can be used "multiple" palettes on the same game, but the colours on those palettes would be repeated, arent they? So you thing those 10 colours would be any 10 of the 32K snes palette? But in practise Im not sure if thats been done in any game actually.. Or maybe would be the limit of these "multiple" 4 colout palettes that you.are able to put on the same game?
That's was awesome, looking forward to next parts! I was going into this video expecting to know everything and actually learnt quite abit! I used have a Super GameBoy back in the day loved it, and quite recently my girlfriends dad found her original SGB (CIB), and the box is in brand new condition, the cart looks great as well but doesn't stop us from playing our GB games whenever we can :)
+madmax01992 glad to hear it, I'm all about trying to learn new things about old hardware and sharing my findings! To be honest, this is just an excuse for me to play Game Boy games (as if anyone should ever need an excuse!)
+Jay Zero yeah, I recall them innovating a lot in terms of audio - Dolby Surround in the SNES versions of Turrican, MP3 streaming in a few N64 games, etc.
I’m not sure - I would have thought someone had done it by now. Home brew devs are able to code border/palette support from scratch, but I don’t think anyone has been able to retrofit that for an existing game (or at the very least, hasn’t tried!)
I have an English Pokemon yellow game and I have a Japanese famicon when I put it in it says the data has been destroyed what's happening. Please answer
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers has a special border. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie had a special border. Pokémon Yellow has a special Pikachu border.
Does anybody know if Super Game Boy palettes are used on the Game Boy Color? Like, if I inserted Metroid II into a Game Boy Color, would it have the same palette as it would on the Super Game Boy, or would it still have the default color scheme that the GBC uses for GB games in general?
As it happens, the Game Boy Color has its own set of default palettes for a few games - Metroid 2, for example, has a much more pleasant black/blue/red/yellow/white palette that’s much better than the SGB’s selection of garish hues.
It’s a much better palette for that game! I used that palette recently for my review of Metroid 2 on here, so have a look at that to see what it looks like :)
So the Super GameBoy had the ability to add SNES sprites to GameBoy games, but Nintendo only had the right to use it, and it used only for a game's title font and borders? ...How come the Super GameBoy has a feature that was implemented and banned, but it was deemed to expensive at the time, to add the crystal ocsilator, and the link cable port?
So as far as I know, the entire Game Boy featureset was free for any developer to use (after all, Taito were the only ones to use the ability to call up a SNES game directly from a GB cartridge with Space Invaders)...It’s just that very few developers bothered to do anything with it! It still puzzles me why there was no link port on the original unit and incorrect clock timings.
Pug Hoof Gaming I’m guessing having both GB sprites and SNES sprites would take up too much space for almost any game, and Space Invaders is only able to do it since such a small game in the first place. For the lack of a link port, it was either... A: Because Nintendo thought it would be unfair for one player to have a big, colorful, bright screen and the other player to have a tiny, green, dark screen B: Because goddamn RF interference from a *wired* connection. (That is Nintendo’s actual excuse in one of the Nintendo Power issues, which sounds too stupid to be true.) And for incorrect clock speed, probably for manufacturing savings since the two systems’ clock speeds were close enough for most people.
I've had a friend give me a super gameboy and the audio from the cartridge won't work but the sounds from the menu work...is this a problem where I have to replace parts from the cartridge ???
+Johnny Boi Have you tried other Game Boy carts in your Super Game Boy? Do those carts work in an original Game Boy. As a first port of call, I'd wipe all contacts down with a cotton swab dipped in some isopropyl.
Pug Hoof Gaming I've tried 2 games actually Mario land and game and watch collection l. They both worked flawlessly on a gba and I've tried cleaning it but still no in game audio ):
Well, it won’t work with GBA carts for a start, only original GB games, and Color games with GB support. As for clone systems, it might - It might not. All depends on the clone system and how well it’s built.
You’d need a way to get past the region lockout, either with an import adapter or by modding your system with a SuperCIC chip/board. However, unless you modified your system with a 60Hz setting, the timing would be a bit slower.
@@PugHoofGaming I have a 1 chip PAL console but heard modding the console might affect it badly?? So might have to go with a adapter but will look mutant coming out the top of my snes 😂😂
Not detrimental at all - My 1-Chip Super Famicom has an RGB amp, dejitter board and a SuperCIC board and it’s perfect. You can get a combined board now with SuperCIC, Dejitter and a dual frequency oscillator (so that 60Hz and 50Hz modes run at the correct speeds) - Worth doing!
Do you own a Super Game Boy? What were/are your favourite games to play on it? Any other games you know of that have cool Super Game Boy features? Share your stories, here in the comments!
Yup! It was the only way - not owning a Game Boy - that I experienced Link's Awakening, The Mario and Wario platformers, and the Gameboy Mega Man games. Pity they never released a version that could play GBC games, at least stateside or that I know of.
I just had a JP Super Game Boy arrive last week, so I've been using it to play my favourite game of all time: Donkey Kong '94. I'd seen commercials for the extra features DK94 has on Super Game Boy twenty years ago, but I'd never had a chance to put the two together until now, and holy god is it ever a joy to play on SGB. It has a great custom border of an old DK arcade machine, custom colour palettes for each level, and plays really, really well with a SNES controller. I've had that DK94 cart in my bag for probably twenty years consistently, and now I don't think it's ever leaving my SNES. What a great little machine.
+Michael Gold DK94 really is one of the shining examples of what can be done with the Super Game Boy, even as one of its first games. Thanks for sharing your story!
Do you own a PAL Super Nintendo (the one that looks like the Super Famicom) or an NTSC Super Nintendo (the purple and grey North American one)? If you own a North American SNES, you can snap some tabs in the cart slot and your Japanese Super Game Boy will work fine. If you have a PAL system, you'll need an import converter (and it'll run slower unless you mod your system for 60Hz).
The outsides might look the same, but the PAL SNES and Super Famicom are different enough to stop it working on a PAL SNES without modification. The PAL SNES and Japanese Super Famicom use different television standards (SNES is PAL 50Hz, Japanese Super Famicom is NTSC 60Hz). I use a PAL SNES which is modified to play NTSC games at 60Hz.
Excellent, welcome to the club! Was there a particular game you wanted to get it for, or did you just fancy getting one to play Game Boy games on your TV?
Well, as reasons go, DK94 is definitely a good excuse, as is Pokemon Gold :) Hopefully this series shows you a bit more about what you can do with your new purchase (I've also done videos about the Game Boy Player, and a list of some of the best SGB games)
+Gabriele Riva It's all part of my plan to hypnotise you with subliminal images of Wario Blast. Seriously though, thanks for the feedback - I have recently been fiddling with the colour opacity for newer vids, so it shouldn't be quite as distracting in future!
@@PugHoofGaming sorry..I played a gameboy game on snes for the first time and the picture was black and white. Turns out I had to switch from component to video. 👍🏻
The only way to defeat the whole purpose of the supergameboy is to hookup the snes to a B&W sony watchman sothat you can no longer play those gameboy games in color and the image will be even smaller at average due those BG borders around the screen. So hahaaa🤣🤣
Did they bothercoding in 50hz modes in SNES games? Street Fighter II had horrible borders on the PAL version.
HORRIBLE 50Hz mode, sure, but they were there...
Interesting! I assumed it would be region free as well
No u didn't

It is odd that there wasn't a link port on the original model, but thinking about it - I don't recall the link ability to be particularly popular before the release of Pokemon. It wasn't really something most Game Boy owners even bothered with.

Pug Hoof Gaming yea thank you. I actually ordered a gamecube with gameboy player yesterday on ebay
Excellent, you’re gonna love it!
Pug Hoof Gaming thank you for your help.
Good vid mate, I bought this just to play links awakening on a big tv :D
+Top 10 Retro and that's not a bad way to play it, either :)
Now there is a Switch version of it. Believe me, the graphics are WAAY better than the original Game Boy graphics.
True, but there’s still some merit in playing the original version :)
@@PugHoofGaming thank you so much for aswering :)
yeah, thats why I wonder about the total, like the actual "palette" , because I keep reading that can be used "multiple" palettes on the same game, but the colours on those palettes would be repeated, arent they?
So you thing those 10 colours would be any 10 of the 32K snes palette? But in practise Im not sure if thats been done in any game actually..
Or maybe would be the limit of these "multiple" 4 colout palettes that you.are able to put on the same game?
No problem :) Theoretically, I can’t see why that wouldn’t be the case, as the Super Game Boy has access to anything the SNES can do.
Sweet! Thanks for the hack! I’ll be doing this with mine👍🏻
The reason why Factor 5 emphasized sound so much is probably because they licensed their audio tech to other developers, like EA.
+Jay Zero yeah, I recall them innovating a lot in terms of audio - Dolby Surround in the SNES versions of Turrican, MP3 streaming in a few N64 games, etc.
my gameboy games arrived at5 my door whilst watching this video
It’s a sign!
Those gameboy borders codes don't work. Im trying to get the translucent gameboy and it don't work.
I assure you, they do - Only when playing Mario’s Picross though!
Hello ! Question how to I access the menu where I can enable the audio ? I have been playing my GB games without audio . Thank you in advance !
5:16 i cant the only one who thought he said "the farting monsters" 💀
I hope people are able to make hacks that make custom enhancements so we can unleash the true power of it!
@@PugHoofGaming Hmm! That sounds really cool!
It’s a much better palette for that game! I used that palette recently for my review of Metroid 2 on here, so have a look at that to see what it looks like :)
@@PugHoofGaming I’ll go check that out, then! :)
Is there anyway to fix the sound issue? I have a super Gameboy myself and love everything about it except for the sound being different
They only way would be to modify the SGB with a different clock crystal that uses the correct timing.
That's pretty awesome its like the Nintendo switch
Indeed! Nintendo were always ones to retool older ideas with new tech, and this is an excellent example :)
best nya cerita super game boy the series ni
A: Because Nintendo thought it would be unfair for one player to have a big, colorful, bright screen and the other player to have a tiny, green, dark screen
B: Because goddamn RF interference from a *wired* connection. (That is Nintendo’s actual excuse in one of the Nintendo Power issues, which sounds too stupid to be true.)
And for incorrect clock speed, probably for manufacturing savings since the two systems’ clock speeds were close enough for most people.
11:04 - An evil villain's laugh as performed by someone doing a terrible dry reading of the script ;)
Anyone know if IT will work on snes clone systems? I collect carts for my gba.
Well, it won’t work with GBA carts for a start, only original GB games, and Color games with GB support. As for clone systems, it might - It might not. All depends on the clone system and how well it’s built.
@@PugHoofGaming he kinda could collect gb/gbc carts for his GBA tho
Only really way to justify the best out of gameboy
Does the super Gameboy 2 japanese work on pal UK consoles?
You’d need a way to get past the region lockout, either with an import adapter or by modding your system with a SuperCIC chip/board. However, unless you modified your system with a 60Hz setting, the timing would be a bit slower.
@@PugHoofGaming thanks for replying straight away I'll mess around with the console thank you
No problem! Definitely worth putting some mods in there (or even better, track down an NTSC system, especially a 1-Chip version)
I just got a complete and box super Gameboy for 24.99 at Games2Go and I want to know how to change the color palette
All of the info you need is in the video, there’s a little bit in there about changing the palette.
Thank you
I just picked one up
Excellent, welcome to the club! Was there a particular game you wanted to get it for, or did you just fancy getting one to play Game Boy games on your TV?
@@PugHoofGaming It was Donkey Kong 94 and yes playing Pokemon Gold on a TV was also another reason
Well, as reasons go, DK94 is definitely a good excuse, as is Pokemon Gold :) Hopefully this series shows you a bit more about what you can do with your new purchase (I've also done videos about the Game Boy Player, and a list of some of the best SGB games)
@@PugHoofGaming Sweet, I'll have to check those out
1989 Gameboy is created but at the some time it was already out dated.
That zoomed out mirroring border is REALLY distracting...
+Gabriele Riva It's all part of my plan to hypnotise you with subliminal images of Wario Blast. Seriously though, thanks for the feedback - I have recently been fiddling with the colour opacity for newer vids, so it shouldn't be quite as distracting in future!
Why is my game coming out black and white??
Not sure what you’re asking as you haven’t really given much information - What game and how are you playing it?
@@PugHoofGaming sorry..I played a gameboy game on snes for the first time and the picture was black and white. Turns out I had to switch from component to video. 👍🏻
me estan hablando en ingles asi que no van a tener el super
wow
your facial expressions are identical to mine!
I hope that’s a good thing! :)
Yes! it's strange :D
The only way to defeat the whole purpose of the supergameboy is to hookup the snes to a B&W sony watchman sothat you can no longer play those gameboy games in color and the image will be even smaller at average due those BG borders around the screen.
So hahaaa🤣🤣
Why did Nintendo limit what developers could do with the super gameboy. Another stupid nintendo decision omg!
I wonder if there was a technical reason (i.e. it was limited to the point of useless). Nintendo will certainly never tell!
