No. Some people don't care, and others are NOT aware of the possibilities. We really need to stop giving large swaths of people credit for critical thinking they don't possess. It isn't simply being ignored. If anything, the internet and social media have shown to those able to see that people aren't as smart as we assume they should be.

For example: Google is the most popular search engine out there and they’ve purposely made it convenient to do that. It's also not 'complaining', it's more like alarming everyone, because barely anyone knows how serious the situation is. It's about data and companies taking way more of your data then you know, everything is being saved, from how fast you drove in real life to how long you stared at a certain website. And every single piece of information is useful to them, it's like a puzzle, they litteraly know more about you, then yourself. I stopped using face filters, Instagram and twitter and my self esteem is stronger than ever and I actually love the way I look. And my anxiety has lessened because I don’t see stupid arguments about serious topics. It’s really important to not get sucked into it all and let it become your identity.

The documentary recommends government regulation as the solution. In other words, give the powerful politicians who are the most corrupt POS on earth even more power. Cue the sad piano music at the end to aid in your decision making. Because we all know why this was made: the American people failed to elect one of the two establishment hacks they offered up in 2016, which they call a "bad outcome" in the film. They must stop more bad outcomes. No more wrong think. No more opinions. Only think the same thoughts as the establishment.
You will find some right stuffs if you look hard enough but yeah most of them are just meh. The core idea of social media isn't wrong, the people manipulating them are.

You’re not the only one. I honestly don’t know how people didn’t know this before. Most social media apps on my phone have notifications turned off, and I have such a small interest in them, when I do see a notification that’s not a text from from a friend, I usually ignore it. I don’t get the advertisement thing. Has anyone ever seen an ad for something that made them want to buy it? That hasn’t happened to me since I still played with toys, and thought happy meals were the best thing in the world.
I deleted Facebook and Twitter in December 2019, and my screentime report has been mostly reading and reference and productivity. My daily average is still about 5 hours on the phone, but I'm mostly learning new skills from LinkedIn Learning or UA-cam. I am happier and more focused on what's important - family! I don't miss the "likes" I get on my posts, and to be honest, I have no desire to be back on those platforms ever.
I deleted facebook, instagram, twitter in 2017. Recently opened a new facebook account and cancelled it right after. Social media is not for me anymore and life is great!

I'm 18 idk if just me but I don't use tik tok, I'm not active on Instagram. I'm just glad I didn't build my life on social media. I'm active on other platforms such as reddit and UA-cam but I use it to learn new things every day. Social media is just like everything in life. It's what you make of it and how often you consume it. If you're using social media to fill a void in your life it's going to destroy your self esteem. But if you use it the right way in moderation like for instance, knowing what's going on, learning new skills, asking for help on a assignment, etc ... It's the most helpful tool ever. When it's taken excessively, the problems settle in.
You my friend are very mature for your age. Time is the most valuable asset we've got in our hands. We have to choose how we use our time wisely and stand out in the crowd. I barely use social media to anything but stuff that aggregates value to my life. My instagram account is active just to get in touch with people through the inbox. Facebook I use to check out groups about career topics, living abroad. I can spend ages not accessing any social networks. UA-cam is the only one I access on a daily basis due to a course I am enrolled in, which has its videos uploaded on UA-cam.
All the temptations are there trying to penetrate into your mind. Most people are lured into those traps. Auto scrolling feeds, the reward system of likes. That's where the danger is. Those features where designed in a way to activate the same areas in the brain as when you're gambling and doing drugs. They are all very addictive. First and foremost, your auto control and priorities in life have to be well clear in your mind, otherwise you will be just another social media zombie wandering through useless feeds. I think it is time to call it a day. Enough of UA-cam hahaha

But unfortunately no, this is not the case in todays world. It's now a competition between who can get the most followers, likes, views, comments, etc. People on social media have created this whole fake profile of themselves just for validation and acceptance from society. A wise man once said, " you only see what they choose you to see". I have found this quote to be very true because the amount of people I've met in real life who were instafamus, tik tok famous, etc... were not happy. Personally, i got enlightend in some way by this documentary. It explains so much about my past behaviours and my depression when i was 20. Im very thankful, netflix managed to publish this and for the honest interviews in there. All the best for the ones, who has the position or impact to fight for humanity and a stable society. My mission is to gain back control over my own life by not getting used by technologie, but to work with it like it should be used. Like playing an instrument or by seeing it as an extension of our brain.
I checked out of believing in western world thinking long ago... UA-cam is the only platform I use on a constant basis but Ive shut down my FB, never had a Twitter account etc etc. My online presence is minimal and if people try to take photos of me ill snatch their camera... The threat is real.

Most people who are deactivating their social media accounts and still clinging to UA-cam are the last genration who really appreciated the power of television and enjoyed every single moment of their childhood without worrying about losing more followers on Twitter or getting more likes on Instagram. It also seems to suggest that because thats what they search online, that's what gets recommended to them on a daily basis, convincing them further of their own opinions And the same can be said for us, we may look up things in search of a particular result and Google etc. will recommend whatever fits our narrative

I'm surprised that people are just now figuring this out. You dont have to be on Facebook or any other platform. Parents dont have to give their cell phones. They can enroll them in sports, arts classes, after school programs and do any number of things to help them interact socially. Our data isn't being mined by social media alone. It started with television ratings and advertising. There's also store cards that help grocery stores print coupons at the register for products you like, brand loyalty cards, radio advertising etc. I remember wanting Nike shoes as a kid because of a TV ad I saw. It took forever to save up enough to get them. That's when I got my first loyalty card too. I got a punch everytime I shopped there. When I spent "X" amount I got a discount. When I wore the shoes I valued every complement "like" etc. So, we needn't act like it's a new concept. We just need to hit the off button a little more often and find a tree to climb or a club to join.

Netflix Documentaries never fails to amaze us. It should be displayed in theatres and schools all around the world. The social media is now getting out of hand. Governments around the world should collaborate to control it.
This was actually really interesting. I like how explained WHY people are so polarized right now. I think this is 100% true. There is also more and more hate because people don't see each other as humans. They are just names on the other side of a screen, demonized.
Thru the socials, it's become exponential, but the polarising trend already started early 80s mebbe even Nixon Era. Cars, suburbs, television, 57 channels to each his own, people ve become more estranged with every step, see m walking the streets, locked to their screens, hearing their own stuff inside headphones. Tbf, polarization can happen regardless of social media though, mostly because of stuff like cognitive biases, cognitive dissonance, fallacies, etc. There's also plenty of moments throughout history where people have tried processing a lot of heavy, morally ambiguous things through demonization of other people (as shown in a lot of studies about tribalism or groupthink or when people develop what their sense of justice/moral compass is).

Every now and again I need to visit this documentary for a refresh. I've had my notifications turned off for a year now. I've also quit Instagram and Facebook and my mental health has been 10× better since.
I think whats new is the idea that these platforms are the reason for increased divide and polarization in all democratic countries, at least that's what I took away from it.
@Ÿamada If you say so, I don't remember that. Regardless seems like an irrelevant detail considering most of the content seemed to be politically neutral. I found the overall feel of the film to have a uniting quality to it, so I can certainly understand if some people won't like it. Some people are too far down the rabbit hole to turn back now

True. Although I only watch UA-cam, no facebook, no insta, no tiktok, no snapchat or whatever else is out there. twitter only for my bank as they are the easiest to reach there. I don't check it, I don't follow anyone, I only use it when I have some banking question. I'm not smart, just less connected as I found myself not believing to anyone.

All social media did was uncover (because it’s always been like this) how selfish mankind is whether we want to admit it or not, and shows the extent people will go for individual notoriety or status (what the new people call clout). I suddenly feel woke. And while most people joke about this, I for one am weening myself off Facebook (it's probably one of the first, along with Twitter) for division and conspiracy theories. Yeah, I felt myself going down the rabbit hole in regards to the political rhetoric. I was starting to wonder why my depression was becoming 10 fold and why I felt angry all the time. I think the hardest part about losing social media is knowing that you'll lose all those connections with people. You have to be prepared to sever the cord. I once did an experiment on FB and asked people, "Who would like to talk on the phone? I'll call anyone in US or the UK. Who wants to get off social media and just talk?" I got NO replies. This is the world we're in right now. No human connection. Deep down I knew social media was not a good thing. I think many of us are in a state of denial. I know I was. People wonder where groups like Qanon come from? They come from social media. So yes, people can joke about it but remember where this will lead us. Do we take the red pill, or the blue pill?
@Aliengirl777 Star This is somewhat true but then you are faced with having little to no connections in your life. It's bad enough with the Covid-19 isolating people. So my first step is limiting my usage, only posting occasionally and when I do, it's something light or funny and eventually I will get used to the lack of contact. I also paint dolls and use FB as a source for my commissions. That would be a financial blow. It's where the doll communities are. All of my high school friends, people I used to work with and people I've known for 30+ years are on FB. I've already removed family from FB and unfriended about 44 people recently. Baby steps but I'll get there eventually. :)

To the people saying Netflix is a part of this, I wouldn’t say so. Netflix is a service that you pay for, and that service includes it looking at what you like and recommending other things you’d like. You can opt out anytime and stop paying. They don’t sell your data to advertisers, everything they do is in service to you. Social Media is different though, because their main goal is to keep you hooked on the platform to feed you ads. This includes UA-cam, Facebook, Reddit, etc. That’s why it’s free. Netflix isn’t doing any of that, they simply provide a personalised recommendation service that YOU pay for. You don’t see people scrolling Netflix during school or work, or Netflix buzzing you about a recent friend that likes a certain movie. Nor do you see ads everywhere on the site. I highly recommend this documentary btw.
That's what I was thinking when reading these comments. I don't think the people saying that Netflix does this too understood the point or watched the documentary. I recommend reading The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff. (maybe not the whole book but there are some very interesting points made).
Netflix don't sell your data, but can put bias to the content you see by recommendation. Nevertheless I appreciate that they release this kind of content. Is a real service to the world.

Social media is a huge part of it as well as the rapid growth of technology. I lived in the era of nokia/ flip phones and people were not upgrading their gear every year then. Life was much slower and I wish I had more foresight in my youth to not take that time for granted. We had time to just be human then without iphones or tech in the way 24/7...the depression comes from not being physically around humans as much or nature.
There has already been so many interviews on this subject with ex facebook employees years ago about how they used neuroscientists to make it as addictive as possible and they even have their own neuroscience lab. This is just the first time its being packaged into this format so they can try spoon-feed it to the masses.

Uh, Netflix is a PAID platform WITHOUT targeted ads. Of course they need to make a profit to make and buy new series and movies. Netflix is a creative production company and content platform. What content does Facebook or Google make? None! Evne UA-cam has stopped with their own original content. But Netflix actually creates content and only uses the information of what their customers like to make more great content. Netflix is not in the business of selling ads, selling data or manipulating their customers worldview for profit.

Before watching this documentary I thought was mad cus I was th only sane person among my friends who aren't into social media. They made think I was lonely being disconnected.
I just watched the documentary, as a UX designer myself I agree with 70% of what they were addressing. It basically depends on the individual also, I get it people are vulnerable to bad things more but it solves good things also like if I watch a lecture on C++ on youtube and in recommending section there will be the top 4 videos suggesting C++ videos but if I watch hate speech then it will suggest hate speech. You don't have to remove all notifications or put extensions to remove suggesting videos on youtube, you just have to be wise to choose what you want to see. P.S. Facebook and Instagram are just toxic and bad.
The addiction of people with social media IS A FACT and we can see it all around us, especially in this quarantine. It is totally true that we are now in a social problem because of the constant overuse of these tools. Everyone uses social media but nobody talks about the influence that it has in our lives and the negative that it could be. Exactly one year ago I deactivated my Instagram & other social media accounts. From November till July i only had Facebook messenger for chat & UA-cam , that’s was it . Even during those hard times in March and April when i couldn’t leave the house , i was trying to be as far from my phone as possible. My daily screen time was 2-3 hours. Well everything has changed since I downloaded Instagram again , then i decided to reactivate my Tik-Tok and yeah , 9 months of being happy and finally overcoming my phone addiction was gone . My daily screen time is 10+ hours and i am trying to improve it . But it’s too hard . Being off social media helped me to grow so much and be the person i am today . I am not planning to delete UA-cam but i need to say goodbye to other apps .

I always knew there was something inherently wrong with social media, this documentary brought all of my inner thoughts into focus in the most organized, thoughtful, and moving way. Thank you to the creators and anyone involved in the production of this perfectlyo put together dcumentary.

Most social media apps on my phone have notifications turned off, and I have such a small interest in them, when I do see a notification that’s not a text from from a friend, I usually ignore it. I don’t get the advertisement thing. Has anyone ever seen an ad for something that made them want to buy it? That hasn’t happened to me since I still played with toys, and thought happy meals were the best thing in the world.

I deleted Facebook and Twitter in December 2019, and my screentime report has been mostly reading and reference and productivity. My daily average is still about 5 hours on the phone, but I'm mostly learning new skills from LinkedIn Learning or UA-cam. I am happier and more focused on what's important - family! I don't miss the "likes" I get on my posts, and to be honest, I have no desire to be back on those platforms ever.

I'm 18 idk if just me but I don't use tik tok, I'm not active on Instagram. I'm just glad I didn't build my life on social media. I'm active on other platforms such as reddit and UA-cam but I use it to learn new things every day. Social media is just like everything in life. It's what you make of it and how often you consume it. If you're using social media to fill a void in your life it's going to destroy your self esteem. But if you use it the right way in moderation like for instance, knowing what's going on, learning new skills, asking for help on a assignment, etc ... It's the most helpful tool ever. When it's taken excessively, the problems settle in.
You my friend are very mature for your age. Time is the most valuable asset we've got in our hands. We have to choose how we use our time wisely and stand out in the crowd. I barely use social media to anything but stuff that aggregates value to my life. My instagram account is active just to get in touch with people through the inbox. Facebook I use to check out groups about career topics, living abroad. I can spend ages not accessing any social networks. UA-cam is the only one I access on a daily basis due to a course I am enrolled in, which has its videos uploaded on UA-cam.
All the temptations are there trying to penetrate into your mind. Most people are lured into those traps. Auto scrolling feeds, the reward system of likes. That's where the danger is. Those features where designed in a way to activate the same areas in the brain as when you're gambling and doing drugs. They are all very addictive. First and foremost, your auto control and priorities in life have to be well clear in your mind, otherwise you will be just another social media zombie wandering through useless feeds. I think it is time to call it a day. Enough of UA-cam hahaha

I'm surprised that people are just now figuring this out. You dont have to be on Facebook or any other platform. Parents dont have to give their cell phones. They can enroll them in sports, arts classes, after school programs and do any number of things to help them interact socially. Our data isn't being mined by social media alone. It started with television ratings and advertising. There's also store cards that help grocery stores print coupons at the register for products you like, brand loyalty cards, radio advertising etc. I remember wanting Nike shoes as a kid because of a TV ad I saw. It took forever to save up enough to get them. That's when I got my first loyalty card too. I got a punch everytime I shopped there. When I spent "X" amount I got a discount. When I wore the shoes I valued every complement "like" etc. So, we needn't act like it's a new concept. We just need to hit the off button a little more often and find a tree to climb or a club to join.

Netflix Documentaries never fails to amaze us. It should be displayed in theatres and schools all around the world. The social media is now getting out of hand. Governments around the world should collaborate to control it.
This was actually really interesting. I like how explained WHY people are so polarized right now. I think this is 100% true. There is also more and more hate because people don't see each other as humans. They are just names on the other side of a screen, demonized.
Thru the socials, it's become exponential, but the polarising trend already started early 80s mebbe even Nixon Era.
Cars, suburbs, television, 57 channels to each his own, people ve become more estranged with every step, see m walking the streets, locked to their screens, hearing their own stuff inside headphones. Yip, one of m here.

I think whats new is the idea that these platforms are the reason for increased divide and polarization in all democratic countries, at least that's what I took away from it.

I found the overall feel of the film to have a uniting quality to it, so I can certainly understand if some people won't like it. Some people are too far down the rabbit hole to turn back now

I suddenly feel woke. And while most people joke about this, I for one am weening myself off Facebook (it's probably one of the first, along with Twitter) for division and conspiracy theories. Yeah, I felt myself going down the rabbit hole in regards to the political rhetoric. I was starting to wonder why my depression was becoming 10 fold and why I felt angry all the time. I think the hardest part about losing social media is knowing that you'll lose all those connections with people. You have to be prepared to sever the cord. I once did an experiment on FB and asked people, "Who would like to talk on the phone? I'll call anyone in US or the UK. Who wants to get off social media and just talk?" I got NO replies. This is the world we're in right now. No human connection. Deep down I knew social media was not a good thing. I think many of us are in a state of denial. I know I was.
People wonder where groups like Qanon come from? They come from social media. So yes, people can joke about it but remember where this will lead us. Do we take the red pill, or the blue pill?

@Aliengirl777 Star This is somewhat true but then you are faced with having little to no connections in your life. It's bad enough with the Covid-19 isolating people. So my first step is limiting my usage, only posting occasionally and when I do, it's something light or funny and eventually I will get used to the lack of contact. I also paint dolls and use FB as a source for my commissions. That would be a financial blow. It's where the doll communities are. All of my high school friends, people I used to work with and people I've known for 30+ years are on FB. I've already removed family from FB and unfriended about 44 people recently. Baby steps but I'll get there eventually. :)

I would probably stay on UA-cam as well, because I like to discover new music here but I don't follow their recommendations. I would like to get back to connecting with people via phone. To the people saying Netflix is a part of this, I wouldn’t say so.
Netflix is a service that you pay for, and that service includes it looking at what you like and recommending other things you’d like. You can opt out anytime and stop paying. They don’t sell your data to advertisers, everything they do is in service to you.
Social Media is different though, because their main goal is to keep you hooked on the platform to feed you ads. This includes UA-cam, Facebook, Reddit, etc. That’s why it’s free.
Netflix isn’t doing any of that, they simply provide a personalised recommendation service that YOU pay for. You don’t see people scrolling Netflix during school or work, or Netflix buzzing you about a recent friend that likes a certain movie. Nor do you see ads everywhere on the site.

I recommend reading The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff. (maybe not the whole book but there are some very interesting points made).
Netflix don't sell your data, but can put bias to the content you see by recommendation. Nevertheless I appreciate that they release this kind of content. Is a real service to the world.

Social media is a huge part of it as well as the rapid growth of technology. I lived in the era of nokia/ flip phones and people were not upgrading their gear every year then. Life was much slower and I wish I had more foresight in my youth to not take that time for granted. We had time to just be human then without iphones or tech in the way 24/7...the depression comes from not being physically around humans as much or nature.

What content does Facebook or Google make? None! Evne UA-cam has stopped with their own original content. But Netflix actually creates content and only uses the information of what their customers like to make more great content. Netflix is not in the business of selling ads, selling data or manipulating their customers worldview for profit.

I just watched the documentary, as a UX designer myself I agree with 70% of what they were addressing. It basically depends on the individual also, I get it people are vulnerable to bad things more but it solves good things also like if I watch a lecture on C++ on youtube and in recommending section there will be the top 4 videos suggesting C++ videos but if I watch hate speech then it will suggest hate speech. You don't have to remove all notifications or put extensions to remove suggesting videos on youtube, you just have to be wise to choose what you want to see.
P.S. Facebook and Instagram are just toxic and bad.

The addiction of people with social media IS A FACT and we can see it all around us, especially in this quarantine. It is totally true that we are now in a social problem because of the constant overuse of these tools. Everyone uses social media but nobody talks about the influence that it has in our lives and the negative that it could be. In fact, this problem has been present for many years, but now it is more evident because of the growth of the internet. We have to change now, individual changes like decreasing the time that we spend on the internet and not to be dependent with those tools. Exactly one year ago I deactivated my Instagram & other social media accounts. From November till July i only had Facebook messenger for chat & UA-cam , that’s was it . Even during those hard times in March and April when i couldn’t leave the house , i was trying to be as far from my phone as possible. My daily screen time was 2-3 hours.
Well everything has changed since I downloaded Instagram again , then i decided to reactivate my Tik-Tok and yeah , 9 months of being happy and finally overcoming my phone addiction was gone . My daily screen time is 10+ hours and i am trying to improve it . But it’s too hard . Being off social media helped me to grow so much and be the person i am today . I am not planning to delete UA-cam but i need to say goodbye to other apps .
