Silver maple makes the best compost mulch...Chips break down nice. So much wood in a silver maple. My neighbor in Kentucky had a big one cut recently. I cut three and a half cords of firewood out of that tree. Not the best firewood, but free, and easy to split. I was still tired of swinging the axe and maul.

I completely understand what you’re saying Blair, I’m behind you a few years only been doing trees for 30+ years. Unfortunately, some people don’t say you’re the arborist enough ! Most tree owners want what , they want ! we are the hired to do a job... I have done this because I need to make money. I’ve learned many years ago, there’s only so many jobs you can walk away from. somewhere from time to time you have to just make a decision. pick your battles and do the best you can as an arborist. There are plenty of good tree owners. We sometimes have to do what we have to do to make do .. sad truth of an arborist..

It’s never nice to take over someone else’s work especially when they don’t have enough knowledge too see what could possibly happen in the future, I’ve been lucky enough to have worked in a garden few hours a week for last 30 years so anything that been badly prune has either gone or been given hair cut restructured framework had few strange looks over the years but worth it in the end, English lilac tree was propped up by several wooden props that when it got side heavy cracked main trunk, I gave it haircut treatment then when produced new shoots made 3-4 branches where before only one! 😊
Always get welding checked up on years of leaning over like us humans gives us pain! Great blog
I love looking at how home owners think beautiful trees will look good will nailed foreign objects in them!!

Hi Chris. I have also had trees that I maintained for a long time only to drive by and see it butchered when homeowner moves and new owners don’t know any better. My channel is primarily about trying to help folks understand trees, and NOT makes these mistakes. A beautiful, well cared for tree is a thing of beauty. You can feel the health and strength of such a tree when you stand under it. When you climb a healthy tree, you can feel the positive energy of you know how.

We have silver maples in No. Colorado, and they get huge. They are also constantly dropping large limbs and are subject to disease. I'm glad I don't have one in my yard. I have four trees. A medium-sized Linden in front, and a huge green ash (treated and healthy) in the back. I also have two aspen volunteers that sprouted in the back. Loveland, CO.

The previously topped silver maple nightmare. Tons of that here. I tell people to remove them and plant a sugar maple with a straight single central leader and enjoy a lifetime of almost zero maintenance. 90 % of the time silver maples outrun their location. Size reduction brings rapid sucker growth and disease pockets and the decline of the tree.

@@arboristBlairGlenn They grow like weeds here. Rarely planted but volunteers mostly left to grow into monsters. Frequently made much worse by being cut off in clearing then later allowed to grow into an eight or ten stem spreading monster. I have one to do now that is like eight trees in one. Previously butchered and topped, full of disease pockets with no central high tie-in point with all leads growing out on a 45 degree angle. Royal pain to do the trim that they want. After telling them that it will come back with a vengeance they still want the tree. A tree like this needs to be away from any structures or power lines. Happy Sunday Blair🌲👋

Is it not true Blair that all trees have a finite lifespan and when their time is up, it's up? Might be sentimental favorites and hard decisions must be made...but when it's safer all around to remove one, that's the best choice? glad to see you survived your bucket truck experience. good stuff. Youngster @ 60, lol, good one. You and I are close in age. I'll be 70 in June this year, I get it.

Some species are short lived but hard pruning wounds will shorten the life of a tree due to opening it up to decay.
