President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a state of disaster on Friday
    But is this move enough?
    Presenter: Mohammed Jajmjoom

Simple answer, corruption led SA to this. Going from being a world class energy provider in 2001 (SA was awarded for being the cheapest and most efficient energy provider globally) in such a short time is mind boggling. Then again they have destroyed all infastructure since taking over. Not much left I'm afraid.

In 1998, the White Paper on Energy Policy warned that Eskom's power reserves would run out by 2007 if the government did not make the necessary investments. But, the government decided in 2001 not to invest in infrastructure.

@@MuantanamoMobile True. There was Pebble-Bed Nuclear reactor that was scheduled for construction by Mbeki Gocernment. The West pressured SA to abandoned it.
The West also pressured SA to stop Shale gas fracting in the Karoo, as well as Oil & Gas exploration off-shore.
When coal plants Ingula, Kusile, Medupi was under construction; Western Intelligence services sabottaged it to cause de-industrialisation and given initiative to Australia in mining investment.
South Africa need to de-couple from the West. When President Zuma tried to do so; war was declared on him by the Spy agencies (Mi6 and former Apartheid intelligence machine), the Media and Judiciary.
The result is the puppet, ineffectual, compromised President Ramaphosa who was a spy for the Apartheid government during the 1980s.

@@MuantanamoMobile Eskom was banned from building new coal power station in 1998 because they wanted IPPs to join to create more competition in the energy sector but eskom prices were the cheapest in the world so IPPs couldn't compete. They realized that IPPs were not joining like they planned in 2004 were the lifted the ban but it was too late. Plus considering between 1998- 2004 millions of people were being connected to the grid, increasing demend but without additional supply. Water, roads, Internet, everything. Ramaphosa is the problem along with the complete corruption of the ANC. Corruption and ineptitude is the real problem. What a lot of people don't know is that South African coal is actually mostly poor quality. The good quality coal has been silently SOLD (for government profit, of course) and shipped off to Maputo. While the South Africans have no power and not water, Mozambique is enjoying the quality coal that gives it the power it needs. The whole thing stinks, not least the university entry level requirements, which are so low that it takes most students now at least 3 years just to complete the first year of a B.A.

Coal, nuclear, natural gas, I don't know, but their shortfall in power generation is pretty shocking and tossing in a few solar panels isn't going to make much of difference. It sounds like the biggest issue isn't corruption followed by a lack of investment in expanding the number of power stations. They say there is a tax incentive for buying solar panels. But there are big issues with this incentive. SARS, the country's revenue service, is terrible with paying back money owed to people and businesses. I've experiences this myself. So I don't trust that I'll be paid the incentive when I do my tax return.
Secondly there is still VAT (value added tax) on solar panels, batteries, and inverters.
Third point is that the incentive is capped at R15000 per household. That's around $800. It's paltry, even if you did manage to get the money owed back to you.
You also just can't trust anything they say they will do. They say we'll be able to sell electricity back into the grid. But before that is really the situation, you can't trust that it will happen.

According to certain economists, it's possible that the U.S. and certain parts of Europe might experience a recession at some point in 2023. Although a global recession, which is characterized by a decline in annual global per capita income, is relatively uncommon due to the faster growth rates of emerging markets like China, in comparison to developed economies. Basically, if economic growth lags behind population growth, it's considered that the global economy is in a state of recession.
