Hello, smiling eyes :) I have every album he's ever recorded as with so many other artists.. I have never scratched or gotten rid of any album since the early '70s when music hit me like a ton of bricks, well over 400 albums...Ruby Starr was an all-time favorite of mine, why I have no clue, she's just different. she only recorded 6 albums and I'm blessed to have them all ..have a great day and THANK YOU!
I really appreciate your knowledge of music and how you are able to analyze what's taking place in a way that most people (not muscians) are able to get a better understanding of how it all comes together. Much gratitude!!! Would love to hear you analyze Molly Hatchet! I play guitar (not very well) and have always been blown away at how underratted the guitarists from Molly Hatchet are. Maybe your analysist of how they put it all together could bring some attention to some of the greatest muscians can make such great music. They are all passed now with the exception of Banner Thomas (founding member and bassist) and I would be very grateful if you could do a video on them. I just read the sad news that singer/actor Marvin Michae Lee Aday, known by his stage name as Meat Loaf has died on Thursday January 20, 2022, he was 74 I recall the first I heard "Bat Out of Hell" Rest in Peace you leave us with an impressive body of works! Marvin Michae Lee Aday/Meat Loaf September 27, 1947 - January 20, 2022
I have NEVER seen Meatloaf not give 100% in ANY of his performances. He just seems to be able to suck you in, eyes wide open from beginning to end of every song. Paradise by the dash board lights. Perfect example
Hi Fil. We are all still grieving the passing of Meatloaf and may I say as we approach the one year anniversary of Jim Steinmans passing that his genius is much missed. There’s an audio of Meatloaf and Jim Steinman performing “Objects in the rear view mirror” which is mind blowing!! I urge you Fil and anyone else reading this comment to check this out. 💛😊
Meatloaf cracks me up... Comes out in his prom outfit missing a tie... Prancing around. Glaring at the audience... Stage acting... Building up a song... Kinda like Roy Orbison starting out slow building up to an explosive ending... We love Meatloaf... Plus a tight great band backing him up..
I turned 15 in November of 1977. I worked at a small concert hall in Morristown, New Jersey. Meatloaf played there on New Years Eve of that year. After the show there was a party backstage. I was talking to him when he reached down and grabbed a bottle champagne opened it and took a swig right out of the bottle and then handed it to me. I took a big swig of it and thought, “what a great job for a 15 year old rockstar wanna be.”
He looks like a serial killer in this vid, but I love Meatloaf! But this performance pales compared with the legendary "Paradise by the Dashboard Light!" And my God, could Carla sing!
LOVE to see him do PARADISE BY THE DASHBOARD LIGHT!!! Even if has to be 2 part due to the length. So iconic. Between Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman created pure magic in the 80s. Saw him live where he pulled 3-4 women to sit on the speakers (I was chosen and it was a glorious experience indeed!).
I love the music of the 70's,so much of it was so theatrical with a story to tell,& meatloaf was the epitome of that era,he had an amazing talent& stage presence.
😎🎤🎼 In 1978 I wore out five cassettes of bat out of hell The combination of Jim Composing and Meatloaf ability with his vocal range to tell a story is amazing!
I believe FIL receives requests for the same artists from multiple people. I have requested certain artists and find out I am not the only one to do so. Not hard to believe you are not the only one when you think about it.
On this sad day as we say farewell to the the great Jim Steinman there is so much to worship at the altar of teen angst the great artist and thanks particularly for noting Todd Rundgren's massive and often unsung contributions to this opus.
Bat out of Hell is, in my humble opinion, one of the BEST albums of all time. Have the cd today but wish I hadn't tossed the album (grrrr!!). Fil, would you do an analysis of Todd Rudgren and Utopia? I didn't know he did work on Bat out of Hell!
God, I would have loved to hear Meat record "Making Love Out of Nothing At All". I like the Air Supply version, but come on! Imagine Meat launching into "I can make the run and stumble / I can make the final block / I can make every tackle at the sound of the whistle / I can make all the stadiums rock!" Honestly, record companies baffle me. Why on earth would you not pay Jim Steinman for his beautiful songs? I'd be throwing money at him like Fry in Futurama! Really enjoyed watching this, thank you so much for sharing this video. :)
Saw him live in a mid sized town in regional Australia in the early 80s. From the location you can probably guess that it was not the peak of his career, but my God he put on a great show. One of the very best gigs I have ever witnessed!
I saw him at a hot air balloon festival in NJ about 10 years ago - definitely not at his peak. Didn't matter. It was in the middle of summer, about 150° in the shade at a little local airport - and nobody cared. From the first minute, he owned every last one of the people in the audience.
I have owned Bat Out of Hell on 8 Track ,LP Vinyl, Compact Disc and ive downloaded it from I Tunes it still remains one of my favorite albums of all times along with a couple of Pink Floyd and Queen albums i was blown away that All those sounds were being played on the guitar i originally thought it was all done on a Synthesiser He also really was. Brilliant on stage performing live with all th theater background
Not only a great album, but also one of the greatest live shows one could ever attend! Jim and the band were mesmerizing from the rise of the curtain! Meat Loaf is an entertainer of the highest order, like Elvis, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, etc., and the show was musically of exceptional quality and kept everyone engaged start to finish! Michael O’Day remains a living legend! Another brilliant analysis Fil! Rock on! 👏👏👏🎶🎶🎶🎤🎂
He definitely is a legend. In 2006 I seen him in concert bat out of hell 3. The concert sold out. He put on a performance that you never forget as long as you live I mean it was really outstanding. When he walked out on that stage he owned it and all eyes were on him
Wow! I can't believe my luck today I found a coin with my birth year on it....... And you uploaded a meatloaf episode 😎💯💯💯 cheers from Australia Fil 🇦🇺🍻
BRAVO FIL! Again you prove the point that us old folks were blessed with the BEST MUSIC EVER! I collected all the songs you mentioned except the one by Air Supply. I cannot tell you how many times I skipped lunch so I could save my money to go buy records on my way home from school. Thank you for this wonderful information.
Hey Fil, I loved Meat.... I always worried he would not be taken seriously bc of his weight, but u know what? It was his weight and talent that pushed him over the edge of talent. And he is talented. Thank you Fil for showing this ma. His dues! I never got to see him live and that’s my sad story...man he could belt it out!
Way back in the early days of internet before they put the big kabosh on downloading music; my teen daughter was downloading music. Because she knew how and I didn't I asked her to download this for me. Later I looked over her shoulder and commented "Blurry by Puddle of Mud? What kind of name for a group is that?" She looked at me and said "I just got Bat out of Hell by Meatloaf for you". Point taken.
Wouldn’t you have loved to seen Meat and Freddie Mercury do a song together ? 😂 Both had great voices and showmanship. It would have been awesome. Meatloaf was a force. Love him and love his heart they had to give him oxygen after the show . He gave it all he had. 🤘🏻
Here is a fun back-story fact about the Album recording, not this live performance. The "Bat out of Hell" album was produced by Todd Rundgren, basically nobody in the music industry wanted to touch it at the time. Anyway, they had finished recording the entire album and Todd was in the studio wrapping things up when Jim Steinman showed up and asked Todd where the motorcycle sound was, don't you have any effects or something? Todd looked at Jim and said "I don't do effects." Todd then, rather sarcastically, asked Jim, "you were serious about the motorcycle?" Jim responded "Yes." So Todd said, if you want an effin' motorcycle, I'll give you one, to which he picked up his guitar plug it in to and Amp, turned the tape deck on and proceeded to record the motorcycle sound...in one take. You can hear the motorcycle at 12:15 in your video, obviously not the same as Todd's recording on the album.
I think the music industry just didn't know how to categorize Meat Loaf because there wasn't anybody else that sounded like him back then. Jim Steinman described Meat Loaf's music as "Wagnerian rock".
That's a great story!!! I knew that Todd Rugren had made that guitar sound, but I never knew how it came about. Thanks for that tid bit. Love hearing stories about in studio production. It kinda reminds me of when pink floyd was recording Dark Side, there's a video of when Dave Gilmour is putting the lead down, and Roger was in the Booth, and he complained that Dave's guitar was feeding back, to which Dave replied, "Feedback? Don't worry about that. Christ, what would rock n roll be WITHOUT feedback?!!!". Your story reminded me of that. If you wanna check it out, it was when they recording "Brain Damage". If you haven't had a chance, I recommend it.
I remember driving around in my 1968 Dodge Dart in the summer of 1978 with friends waiting for his songs to be played on the radio. Back when radio played more than the same 40 songs. Driving around with nothing to do and no worries with an 8 pack of Michelob pony beers and a nickel bag...
Mine was a lovely maroon 4 door that stalled all the time and I’d have to put a pencil in the butterfly part of the carburetor to start it. Good times in the CT suburbs back then...
@@tinadurski4717 You missed his point. Fil does requests, he was telling him to maybe choose to do one of his own favorite artist once in a while. That's what I got from it, don't know how you got "disrespect".
My first year of college, and everyone had this tape. It's part of my life soundtrack! And Rocky Horror Picture Show is still playing in theaters today. I took my college aged daughter to see it for the first time, and she loved it (and Meatloaf)!!!
FIL, THANKS FOR THE VIDEO ON MEAT , AND YOUR GREAT COMMENTS, FIL, IF YOU COULD DO A VIDEO ON THE LATE GREAT BLIND CANADIAN GUITARIST, MR. JEFF HEALEY, THIS GUY WAS ONE OF A KIND, PEOPLE WHO DO NOT KNOW ABOUT HIM NEED A GOOD CRASH COURSE ON JEFF, PLEASE DO A DEAL ON HIM, MAY HE R.I.P., COUSIN FIGEL
Meat Loaf makes more sense when you know that he considers himself an actor, not really a singer. He is playing roles on stage with ever song--sometimes the same role across songs, such as with Bat of Out of Hell. That's why he does the crazy expressions and other overacting. He *is* acting, the entire time he's on that stage. Love the Loaf! :)
Love Meatloaf. I like that he went a bit more theatrical. On a side note, when he began, I couldn’t help but see Jack Black! Now I can see one of Jack’s big influences in his performances in his band.
He goes from a whisper to belting it out ... A very wide range... Lyrics were spot on.... The band following meatloaf like Sinatra band watching him and following him... Like when he started singing... For example...
I grew up listening to Meatloaf. I have his early albums and through those, I ended up buying Elen Foley's album Nightout with her powerful song, "We Belong to the Night". She has such a true rock voice that she could rival Pat Benatar, but unfortunately, Ellen's singing career never reached the status that it should have. Check out Ellen on youtube and see for yourself her powerful voice, a true rock and roll voice.
I like when Meatloaf [Michael] guested on SNL in the 70s and the host was-I believe-Christopher Lee, who introduced him with a sweeping gesture as: "Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like you to meet…Loaf!"
Actually his birth name was Marvin Lee Aday, and he got bullied a lot because of his weight and name. Especially as there was an ad that went "Fat Marvin can't wear Levi's." According to Miachael himself, when being required to use his real name on a contract rather than Meat Loaf, he went to get his name changed, and told the sad story to a judge who then said something to the effect of "Ok, from now on your name is Michael." The nickname "Meat Loaf" was given to him by his high school football coach. There is certainly no doubt that Michael was at his best when teamed up with Jim. Jim was not only writes great tunes, but has a way with words that really is unique, using humour, metaphor and slimily in incredible ways.
I saw Meat back in the day at a large concert venue and he did this bit in between songs where he sat a microphone on the stage floor at the front of stage left and then he walked to the front of stage right and sang a series of notes as loud as he could and the microphone actually picked it up above the noise of the audience. Such a powerful voice.
I love Meatloaf! He was an amazing performer back in the day. I saw him once at a huge show in The Meadowlands in New Jersey for Halloween. It was a super fun show, at one point he was lifted up by a wire like an angel. He has an amazing voice and puts so much drama into his songs. And a wicked sense of humor!
Where would this have been without Todd Rundgren? Paradise by the Dashboard light was on everywhere. Another awesome talent and album , Fil you keep batting 1000’s! It’s always interesting to hear others viewpoints on artists work, an inside view. Thank you for what you do.
Yes the Bat of Hell was a wicked album. Meat Loaf a take charge vocalist. Great musician and insanely talented all around. Thanks Fil and a great analysis on Meat Loaf...
Another great landmark rock opera is the 1969/70. Andrew loyd webber masterpiece, "Jesus Christ superstar" There were other versions afterwards, but the original rock opera is still the GOLD STANDARD. IAN GILLAN of deep purple is Jesus Christ. Murray head is Judas. The entire cast is superb and the music is glorious and timeless. It's audio only, but I wish you could do a critique in the future.
Hey Fil? Can you give a listen to Rory Gallagher “In Your Town” live from 1971? I mean just unbelievable for the energy that emanates from a three piece band. It to me has not been reproduced since.
I have to admit, I was hoping for "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" in which Ellen Foley sang the female part. Apparently, Karla Devito appeared in the video BUT was lip synching to Foley's vocals. Foley is/was a very talented singer and actress as well.
Hey, I've got the Stoney and Meatloaf album, never new it came before Bat out of hell. I love "She waits by the window". Bat out of Hell was a brilliant album, but, apart from Dead Ringer, I don't care much for later material.
I always thought that Meatloaf should put out a best of album with his major hits called, "Oh No, Not Meatloaf Again!", and then an album of his lesser known hits called, "Leftovers". I remember Meatloaf when he was just starting out and struggling and how he used to say when he couldn't get a break, "What am I, chopped liver?" You had to be there for that one.
Aw man. I haven't watched it but I'm about to. I know it's gonna be good. But I do know this... Meatloaf was a badass live performer back in the 70's and I've seen this many times. I just look forward to your analysis
Billie from Night Court ( Ellen Foley) was on the album. She suffered stage fright so Karla filled in on live shows. I think Ellen was better tho' Karla was no slouch.
Ahh Paradise by the Dashboard light was my favorite. Her name was Anita and it was a Pontiac...I swore I would love her until the end of time...now I'm praying for the end of time ...lol
In 1978 I was 14 years old and I remember hearing this album *everywhere*, especially this track. My best friend was a guy and we would sing at the top of our lungs driving around in his van. Sigh. Still friends, though.
I have attended thousands of live performances. Of all those, one Bat Out of Hell II tour performance sticks out, where Michael had the most powerful vocal projection I have ever heard. I was in the upper grandstand and could hear his raw voice over the P.A.! It was a chilling and immersive experience I will never forget. Hats off to whomever had the task of adjusting his gain on the fly, in order to achieve an acceptable live mix. Cheers!
Fuque yeah! This is a track that is eternal, if you love rock. Fil, again your smiles at certain points in the vid show a symbiosis that we musicians and also non musicians find in the moments of musical joy. The Backing vocals are so good, remember the hard word of these singers. Thanks for featuring!
There was another live performance of BOH that is better than this version. His voice is shot. Probably the end if the tour. More fresh Meat Loaf is nothing short of astonishing.

On a side note, when he began, I couldn’t help but see Jack Black! Now I can see one of Jack’s big influences in his performances in his band.
saw some joke on one of your videos: Nurse walks in and asks, "Do you like Meat loaf?" Heard in other room, "No, but I love Rod Stewart."
He goes from a whisper to belting it out ... A very wide range... Lyrics were spot on.... The band following meatloaf like Sinatra band watching him and following him... Like when he started singing... For example...
The coolest fattest rock god ever. God bless aamerica.
Nah, that was Mama Cass.
Ann..
May be Michael when you talk Buuut
HE IS MEATLOAF when HE IS on stage ALWAYS!!! 👍🏼👍🏼😇🙏🌹💋❤️
Especially as there was an ad that went "Fat Marvin can't wear Levi's."
According to Miachael himself, when being required to use his real name on a contract rather than Meat Loaf, he went to get his name changed, and told the sad story to a judge who then said something to the effect of "Ok, from now on your name is Michael."
The nickname "Meat Loaf" was given to him by his high school football coach.
There is certainly no doubt that Michael was at his best when teamed up with Jim. Jim was not only writes great tunes, but has a way with words that really is unique, using humour, metaphor and slimily in incredible ways.
Great vocalist.. Who doesn't love Meatloaf?
@TheBluearmy33 😂😂
His name is Robert Paulson.... His name is Robert Paulson.
Sloe Bone. Fight club guy😭
TheBluearmy33 and 🍄
RDE Lutherie Too done it's mealy loaf lol.
Talent and musicality aside ; calling himself meatloaf , beeing fat and not a prettyboy makes his career even more unique. Deepest respect.
Agreed
And oddly enough he was attractive to a lot of women because he was talented and authentic. Nothing more boring than a vapid pretty boy.
I saw him about 10 years ago - well past his prime - and he did the exact same thing.
He has one the best voices in Rock, almost operatic. Very under rated performer.
#RIP R.I.P. Marvin Lee Aday; September 27, 1947 - January 20, 2022), better known as Meat Loaf #RIPMeatLoaf
When I found out he'd sung on Ted Nugent's 1976 'Free For All' LP, I was even more impressed.
Michael is a special performer, at school we thought he looked quite crazy.
sorry, NOT buying it at all. mr. loaf is more about gimmick than quality music.
Where would this have been without Todd Rundgren? Paradise by the Dashboard light was on everywhere. Another awesome talent and album , Fil you keep batting 1000’s! It’s always interesting to hear others viewpoints on artists work, an inside view. Thank you for what you do.
Meat was like a Broadway performer. There was nobody else quite like him.
Seinfeld tried wearing that shirt.
How's about "I Would Do anything For Love...." ?
How about not?
Yes the Bat of Hell was a wicked album. Meat Loaf a take charge vocalist. Great musician and insanely talented all around. Thanks Fil and a great analysis on Meat Loaf...
Why does no one ever talk about how outstandingly great the guitar of this song (especially on the album version as well) is?? It's amazing!!
I was 16 in 1977 when this album dropped. It rocked our sophomore world! The Hermit of Bear Hollow rocks!! Thanks!
Another great landmark rock opera is the 1969/70. Andrew loyd webber masterpiece, "Jesus Christ superstar"
There were other versions afterwards, but the original rock opera is still the GOLD STANDARD.
IAN GILLAN of deep purple is Jesus Christ.
Murray head is Judas.
The entire cast is superb and the music is glorious and timeless.
It's audio only, but I wish you could do a critique in the future.
Meat Loaf - Rock Opera at its best. 😁🤘🤘👍👍
Loved him, he did some theater first, that was perfect for him.
Bat out of hell song, in my opinion one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll songs ever ! Great Build up from beginning to the end .
°Hello,Fil !! ~Oh.. That's So Heavy And Cool 2 My Ears !! * And This Guy Is A Real "Showman " !!
Do you think this was recorded through the PA? Or do you think this is what the audience heard? I'm thinking it's just through the PA. What you think?
It’s me again Fil. The Meatloaf/Jim Steinman performance I referred to is from the Hudson theatre in 1993.💛😊
Meatloaf saved Rock n Roll at the time record company's only wanted disco.
Rubbish. Just shows how narrow your listening pallette was.
no. that was Bruce Springsteen
My request: "For Crying Out Loud"... I don't know if there is an old live performance video of that, but its such a beautiful, passionate song ❤
My favorite Meat Loaf song ever! So under-appreciated!
My favorite as well.💜💜💜
Look up Jim steinmans version he wrote and cut a bunch of the songs meat perfo
Ahh Paradise by the Dashboard light was my favorite. Her name was Anita and it was a Pontiac...I swore I would love her until the end of time...now I'm praying for the end of time ...lol
His long pause and stage walk at the beginning might be considered performative. But let's be honest, we all know he simply thought he smelled gravy.
Cheers!
His name is Marvin.
Michael, Ted Nugent, and Todd Rundgren used to session in a small club near Southern Methodist University in the early 70s.
R.I.P Bob Kulick
Fuque yeah! This is a track that is eternal, if you love rock. Fil, again your smiles at certain points in the vid show a symbiosis that we musicians and also non musicians find in the moments of musical joy. The Backing vocals are so good, remember the hard word of these singers. Thanks for featuring!
Saw him live back around 1990. Great show. Loud, proud and rockin'.
Love this dude ,,ohhh thanks for putting everything about ELVIS,,right
Rock and Roll Opera. That's what we called it. Meat Loaf is my favorite.
There was another live performance of BOH that is better than this version. His voice is shot. Probably the end if the tour. More fresh Meat Loaf is nothing short of astonishing.
....Hhhhm!.....no mention of Ellen Foley?
