What happens to SuperYachts during the winter months when owners don't want to use them? Where do they go, what do their crew do when they are not being used? Find out here. Also this is a first for me, the first video I have ever filmed solely on a phone! THis entire video was filmed on the new, brilliant iPhone 11 Pro!

I have a 20ft fishing boat.....always always working on something. I couldn’t imagine the amount of work, maintenance these beautiful works of art require.
Around here we call them a "Hole in the ocean" Enjoy your lively
fishing boat. Around here if you put your feet in the water , your toes fall off. Happy fishing.
i cried after i had to sell my 17 foot Everglades boat.... divorce . she left our boat our home and! her cats. they were six yrs old they lived an extra 15+ years w me as Best Friends. Merlyn and Myrtle. better than most humanoids i know.
My brother and I were in Monaco a few years back for F-1. We walked the track and saw the yachts docked, it blew my mind how huge some were.
I was expecting a story about abandoned boats per the thumbnail. That’s why I clicked. That would be an interesting story.
There is a good story (true) about an abandoned Super Yacht that was left for about five years untouched - the owner thought he had already sold it. No crew on-board etc it looked a bit shabby after that time.
I'm glad you clicked, Dam. I really am
DAM8658 that’s what I was thinking also . Are there abandoned ones out there or are they grabbed up by the banks and sold right away
the banks would ONLY get involved IF they actually owned the boat in question because it was purchased on a loan, otherwise you will find that they are owned outright.
Just you wait Henry Higgins, just you wait... Greta is gonna shame everyone into selling their yachts 🤣
I really like the boats with some color on them.
Me too.
The colours would fade unevenly in the hot sun.
Yeah, Madam Goo is stunning.
Its nice to see MY SIRAN on its birth in Monaco rather in Vauban, and you pronounced it right. I was a crew chef on board MY SIRAN in November 2000 until Jan 2001 , It is a beautiful boat. The crew were super busy during winter and the owner didn't visit the winter birth. normal shift rotation in winter mode was 10 days on 2 days off.
Plus with you living in a warm climate all the time, it is easier to live on your yacht. Also, thank you for telling us about life for the staff members. Yes, having the boss him/her living the mobile yacht home is nice. Thanks.
Another cracking video mate, no over the top pretence, natural and informative, unlike a number of huge ego's on you tube. Keep it up, great channel!
Oh, and "concrete boots" 😅
@Jeff somersby If you already know everything about the subject Jeff, why watch it?
Best yacht content on UA-cam
When the owner is onboard. I am not stressed. Because I know what I am doing.... When owner and guests are onboard I am happy and feel relax, because i meet new interesting peoples and I like help peoples.
Simple, yet relaxing video. Thanks.
Thanks for all the input. I wondered how the people that work on the boats do it the winter.
I used to work for a one eye restaurant guy . he loved bragging about his boat but what I remember him telling me is the word BOAT means "bust out another thousand ".
I would be curious to know how many days a year the typical owner is on his boat? And the bigger the boat gets used less or more often by the owner?
It varies per owner🤷🏼♂️
Madam Gu literally sounds like the name a bad guy in a Bond movie would name his yacht.
Maybe he's not bad. Just secretive.
Quite curiously Madame Gu is the name of the second wife of Chinese communist functionary Bo Xīlái who was accused of murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. She is currently serving a life term in Chinese prison. Bo Xilai himself was sentenced on the charges of corruption. It is likely that the couple oversaw a great many deal If other crimes. The owner of the yacht, Russian businessman Andrey Scoch, is himself rumored to be a known criminal boss. There you go
And likely why he avoided filming while the owner left. lol
@@adastra79 Hmm, interesting.
@@adastra79 99% of rich Russki business people are criminals. All pals of the biggest criminal of the bunch, Putin.
Question from a professional musician: Is live performance on super yachts a thing? Are there companies that provide live professional entertainment to these boats, and how does that work?
Yes. It's usually invite only through your booking agent. The owner says,"hey, is so-and-so available to play my birthday?" Or the yacht comes into port and the chief stew hires you through your management company. It does happen. I was at a party and they booked a local band.
@@christopherpeninger324 what's your job on a super yatch, and if am fat, like a little belly guy showing, will it be hard to get on a yatch as an engineer?
@@christopherpeninger324 Ah I see. So it's more of a "who you know" kind of scenario? I'd love to find a way to break into that scene and perform for various boats. Being a professional orchestral musician is all well and good but the allure of performing on luxury yachts is quite tempting.
@@MusicalMercenary My suggestion would be to contact your local harbor master (they're the marina manager) and explain that you are available for for private concerts. If the Harbor Master is in contact with yacht charter company they can inform them of your availability. (most yachts are chartered, if the Harbor Master knows of you then they can advertise your services. It doesn't hurt to tip the harbor master if he hooks you up with a gig)
@@MusicalMercenary with money, almost anything is possible.
This must be the answer to the question "What would you own if money was not a problem" I'm saving for a rubber life raft for my action man!
The shape of Madame Gu is incredible, I looked at a couple of side profile shots of the yacht and the streamlined "aerodynamic" lines of the yacht is just spectacular. It's also strangely very familiar, I could swear that the Madame Gu design was also used for several other sister-yachts, does anyone else think the same?
I spent 7 weeks once in Las Vegas for work, I can't imagine being in Monaco for the entire winter. Hope your not a gambler, those 7 weeks cured me of ever wanting to gamble ever again.
JasJones123 the definition of gambling is a device that separates a fool from his or her money they are in Business to make money not give it away
Very informed video as usual 👍🏼 the super yacht Quinta Essentia look sublime in my opinion 😍
Madam Gu was just here in Antigua and Barbuda a few weeks ago. Left just before the annual Charter Yacht show. Cool that she is in Monaco already.
I wonder how many gallons of fuel it takes to cross the Atlantic?
Yachts are quite expensive to move around. Super rich stay super rich by not spending their earnings. Those boats are for customer, and other public relations, not so much for leisure use.
This is the sad reality all too often
The yacht at the 7:14 mark with the 8 on the stern demonstrates what I mentioned here some time ago, super yacht owners often use numerology and gematria to name their boats. Just like a boat that is 223 feet long pays homage to Skull n Bones...8 is symbol of commanding power, wealth, and the universal symbol for infinity.
Probably an Asian owner. 7 is a much more significant number in the west
Enjoyed this video. You answered some of questions. Thanks for taking time to make the video and sharing with us.
I really want a SuperYacht Submarine!
Iphone 11 seems just great to me lovely shots, very natural very informative
These super/mega yachts are, without doubt, absolutely beautiful pieces of engineering excellence. But, I can say, without any chance of contraception ;-), that if I had that kind of money, my yacht would sail and not motor. Nothing like Maltese Falcon, but something like one of the J-Class yachts, Huckelberry or similar. The thought of being underway on only sail is a dream in itself. Still love this channel though buddy. Perhaps in the future, you could do a mix of motor and sail? 👍👍👍
Have you seen Black Pearl? Amazing sail super yacht.
gearmang Black Pearl is a work of Art 👍👍👍
You should be publicly applauded for practicing safe commenting contraception!!!!
Everywhere when the boss is out of the workplace or room or floor, or yard, it calms down. Not just on yachts.
Now that I think of it, bosses are soul crushing.
Solution: always be the boss
They're unfortunately necessary, largely due to the masses of people without work ethic.
It’s strange, but I worked as a technician in a BMW dealership. It was a known fact, from the ladies who did the paperwork. That every time the boss was off for two weeks, and likewise if the Service manager was on Holls. The throughput of work went up. Simply because you do your job.And don’t have any pressure. Same in the factory I worked at. Hour for Hour, night shift wiped the floor with day shift. Too many chiefs trying to justify an unnecessary position. If the Boss at the BMW dealership had got lost,he would have had a more profitable business. The Factory? On day shift you had a foreman for every section.Night shift ? One superintendent!
Plot twist: eSysman is an International Spy, uses the channel as a disguise.
Great video, thanks! Another reason for staying in MC could be to sell the vessel?
Question: Are there owners that reside on-board full time?
Good question. Good Luck getting an answer from "eSysman"!
security and cleaning staff
If you’ll accept guesses, there may be a few? But when your talking this amount of wealth, traveling wherever they need to or please is a normal thing. Parking a yacht is no big deal. My minor exposure to the well of is through their many homes. Leaving a house with staff unused in the off season that costs sometimes tens of thousands monthly is simply not a concern.
You say a '92 is quite old. Was there a time frame when more and more were built ? If retired from 'your' circuit where do they go ?
Merchant ships are scrapped if it's no longer economically viable to run them. Yachts usually stay around for much longer. If a lunatic shows up every say 15 years to pay for the refit of an old boat. Hence the huge number of yachts for sale
But some of those old boats have such classic lines and are made of metal rather than just plastic. Personally I have my eye on one from the 1980s - she's beautiful.
Always enjoy your videos... great job!
1:32 Sweetest looking vessel of the whole bunch.
the trawler? ok. I know you're not alone in the choice but I never saw the appeal.
Question: Is there a sailing schedule that you could move around the world and keep your boat active for the entire year? Is this ever done? Obviously weather would force you to move to different areas.
He did mention that if they are laid up in Monaco they are not moving to the Caribbean for a "Second season"
What happens to an older yacht. Do they get sold into commercial work, or salvaged? Who wears the cost of the loss?
Music is always nice
Lol , “I don’t want to get concrete boots. “ 😂😂😂 yeah, because swimming is gonna be fun with those🤣
Cool video! Mucho thanks! Question concerning winter ops: how often do they clean the hull?
When you say 1992 is really old for a Super Yacht, does that mean most Super Yachts get retired / scrapped after 20 years ? Haha, the ropes tightening with the tide/current was something I did not expect. For some reason I did not expect a boat that size to move that much in a protected anchorage. Thanks for another interesting vid.
There are superyachts much older than that and in use. Christina O comes to mind. She commands a high 6 figure charter rate and is over 50 years old. I don't think the term superyacht is that old though. Another example is Prince Abdul Aziz launched in 1984. At one time it was the largest yacht in the world at 147 meters.
Do super yachts have to be taken to dry dock to have their hulls scraped and painted every year like smaller boats? Great video by the way.
You can do a hull scrape in the water. There are machines for that. I recall many years ago having a hull scrape on the supertanker I was on. 1100 feet long and 200 feet wide.
Usually every 3-5 years for a haul out
I spent extra for my 32' & it's supposed to last 10 years, let you know in 2030 how it lasted..
It is very nice there. The yachts there are very nice. Some people do live on their yacht. So, between a small mansion on the main land and a nice yacht. Nice.
You mentioned in 1992 is an old super yacht. What is the average life of a super yacht?
What happens when they are decommissioned?
Are they ever repurposed as “working“ vessels?
Are they destroyed?
Given the level of care vs use it seems like these vessels would last a very long time.
Is there a sub market of millionaires (as opposed to billionaires) that use these as the “entry level“ or “poor mans“ super yacht?
They're still very expensive even used. And maintenance costs are higher than ever for an old boat.
New boats take years to build. Billionaires like to commission boats just to sell them brand new. Other billionaires don't want to wait.

another great vid wow madame is just stunning from the side i just love the sound of ropes tietening with the tides lucky you. peace my freind happy holidays my freind ya i am alergic to concrete boots myself.
It is relaxing. I could go to sleep listening to the ropes creak.
always interesting video's but I really appreciate the music balance so that when you're talking it's never over powering; others should take reference from you how to get the balance.
I just need a small fishing boat ... to go out offshore fishing with a few of my regular fishing buddies.
Iphone 11 pro shoots great video, love mine and use it for my detailing business capturing before and after yacht shots.
I love your shows! You’re knowledgeable and charismatic. Let me vote for you with a beard. Much better!
he looks like captain hancock from tintim lol
The owner may not be aboard but it is anything but laid up.
Most are probably used nightly by crew with getting their Tootsie rolls popped kind of laid but not laid up
Really enjoy your videos. New subscriber but wonder what your job is on yachts? Also, great logo design you have.
If you dont know yet he is a engineer.

Main reason, Monaco is relatively cheap compared to other nearby ports.
I am guessing you are laid up for the winter in Monaco. Nice!
Expensive though. I am assuming you eat and shop in a more reasonably priced town. Is this all a fair assumption? Great video as always!
Food is provided on the yacht
Can a boat be used 365 days a year and if not, how much down time would a boat require per year?
Great video as always.... are the Harbour fees different in the wintertime; when the boat is laid up like that in your video??? 👍👍
Thank you for all the great videos and content. Question please: If and when the Super Yachts get laid up for the winter, Why wouldn’t the boss or management company have the vessel moved to a cheaper location? I’ve heard Monico is crazy expensive for the local resources, and it crazy expensive for the crew (per diem). Just basic accounting wise, seems like it would be worth the cost of fuel and wear and tear to move to a different location that has cheaper marina fees!
I think that most of the billionaire owners of such yachts don't care about saving a few dollars or roubles by moving the yachts to other marinas.
Another brilliant short clip. I think U have told us B4 about the cameras u use, they are very good, quality shots. Thanks.
Look at the description ;-) iPhone
Sirian- Amels 177, available for charter (Tax deductible 'Business').
Great in 4K thanks
Which costs more...Winter mooring in Monaco Or a voyage to the Caribbean ??
Voyage for sure.
Not only in terms of fuel but need a full operational crew and or replacement crew when in the Caribbean but also there will be the cost of maintenance to cover the crossing and risk in terms of insurance and rough weather damage. Worth it?
Beautiful
You said 1992 was really old for a Super Yacht.
What happens to older Super Yachts.
Aren't they still used?
Are they demolished?
Or ar they just not seen in Monaco usually because it's too expensive to dock there?
Very interesting talk. Thanks
I love watching your videos
These superyachts are large enough to see on google earth.
You can see cars in google earth as well lol
You can see me in my f’ing yard giving a plane the finger 😂
Interesting. Thank you
What happens to older super yachts? Do they get scrapped or is there another world of yachts that are 10-20 years old?
Take them to a more sunny location? Looks pretty sunny there!
It might be sunny there and then but average daytime temp in Monaco in winter is 13c/55f
Holy crap "Madame Gu" looks like it would be a minimalist existence?
When you speak of the “old” Megayachts, for instance the ‘92 what happens to them? Do they get scrapped, refurbished or repurposed?
They give them to the homeless.
@@evetsnitram8866lol the man has jokes. So should we without yachts be called boatless?
Do a video on your gt2rs, please and thank you.
Is your UA-cam name an abbreviation of your skill set on these mega yachts, something like "Electronics Systems Man"?
Really enjoyed your videos this year and hoping for much more of the same in 2020 :)
Yes, something to do with his job title on the cruise ship
LOL ... concrete boots ....:-)
Not knowing a whole lot about world-wide weather patterns, is it possible to keep sailing year round? Everyone talks about the season. Just curious if a billionaire could just sail all year round. Great video! Also, is it true that most of the people that work in Monaco can’t afford to actually live there? Thanks!
Don't want Concrete shoes😂😂
Thanks for sharing......!
why don't you do a video about your career in yachting? when you started, how many years..
without specifying the name of the yacht but giving us infos about your nowadays job and what you are specialized in..
thanks for the video
none of your damn business
Great insights and the footage from iPhone 11 is incredible. I was wondering what was this filmed with and had to look it up in comments
I did put a line at the end if the video onscreen saying it was iPhone 11 Pro. Yeah it looked awesome.
eSysman yes I saw it in the description and at the very end of video but after having made the comment. Impressive stuff, I went completely overboard (no pun intended) with full frame setup, and it turned into a burden when traveling and it takes away the fun.
Moored in a marine with walkway in a pristine hay and all the homes on the cliff side
Great insight, thankyou.
I just bought some hemp rope for decoration. Do any of the yachts use hemp rope? Maybe some owner who is nostalgic for the smell?
Hemp it heavy and generally too rough to handle after a while, it degrades when wet and does not dry out very quickly - but when it does it does not flex as well as modern lines, also modern lines are stronger fo the same thickness. There's a reason it's not used.
You say the yacht built in 1992 is old… what happens to them next? They look too good too be scrapped.
Great vid as always...If you know of an owner that just needs a ‘guy’ to hang out on his yacht (just to make sure all is in Tip Top condition) please forward my contact information. I can be a great stand-in/stunt owner.

Great vid thanks...Hay be careful on the dock at 7:25 it's going down fast
Madame Gu’s owner would definitely have his henchmen…erm…bodyguards fit you for some concrete boots for filming him.
There was a pilot boat in the background on this video. Do pilots need to bring these yachts in? Is there a certain displacement that dictates the need for a piloted vessel?
It seems to me, if a person is not independently wealthy and had to work for a living, working on a Super Yacht would be a pretty good gig. You would be able to experience the Yacht and get paid at the same time. While the owner has this extremely large expense every year, just for the upkeep.........to experience the Yacht.
Have you or anybody you have been at sea with ended up 'in the drink' or gone overboard? How was it handled? Do you regularly train for such events?
You do a good personal of knowledge in your videos. Which big yacht is yours.
.
Whoever owns that hooptie yacht from 1992 is a poor peasant and they should go work on a potato farm
You need to dress this video up. Hey, a scene where the yacht security is chasing you down the gangplank LOL !!!
Went to Monaco , went to a restaurant on the port , could not find a public toilet any where , the cafe did not supply one and I was desperate but the staff at the cafe couldn't give a stuff so I had to hide in a parking building and crap ...Thank you Monaco ??? All bunch of spoilt little boys !
This may be a little off topic but I watch a lot of videos about smaller yachts...65-92 feet....and I see they have crew quarters small...either in the bow or sometimes hidden where the lazzerett would be aft...what are these crew members jobs/life like....thank you for your great videos
What usually happens to old boats? Are they repurposed?
What about the chef? When boss not on board. The crew still has to eat. Do they rotate too?
Happy for this guy. Looks like a good life. Thanks for the info on a fascinating career.
Lots of tide movement is it the time
Of year, winter, or it the harbor not as sheltered as I imagined
What happens to super yachts after 30, 40 years? Do they get scrapped?
What happems to these super vaughts when they are judged to be TOO old?
