Bowl?? Platter?? You Decide! Wood Turning

- Viewer Kamie sent this piece of White Oak to us just to see what it could become. It became this beautiful Bowl! Or, Platter? Or, well, something useful, anyway. I made good use of my 5/8" bowl gouge as the only tool needed for this piece, other than my 1 1/2" negative rake scraper and my 2" sanding disks. Finished in shellac based sanding sealer and shellac.

Call it a 'Platter-Bowl' or call it what you like except don't dare call it rubbish. I think it is a hell of a beautiful piece Phil. The grain makes a great contribution both to the top & the bottom, to each in its own special way. You again produced a beautiful finish on this piece. Well done & take care. Don
Thank you, Don! I actually like this piece quite a bit.
You are a really good teacher. Thank you for your careful attention to details.
Whatever it is it looks great Phil. Well done.
Oh wow Phil what an awesome and stunningly beautiful piece. What a surprise when you used that 1912 instrument it is fantastic that it still works. Wow.
That's about the coolest bowl ever.
Glad you like it, Dave, thanks! 😊
That came out really good !! Great job Phil!!
Thank you, Bruce!
Look at you pulling the very cool plane out of the tool box .. Very nice piece Al...Thank's
oops....Phil ...Sorry
I would call it bowlatter very good job Phil
Hi Phil....beautiful platter....the finish and the wood grain is lovely .... cheers...All the best.....Andy
Thank you very much, Andy!
That's it ! Now I know what to do with my square piece of wood , "il fallait y penser" as we say in French and Phil "knew what to think" , once again , so thanks a lot , Phil !
Glad to help, Youenn! It just sorta happened and I think that might be the best way. A fun turning!
Very nice piece Phil. White oak can be a pita but you made a beautiful platter/bowl out of it. Your tool presentation never ceases to amaze me. You are the master of "no catch" turning.
It wasn't always so, Jim. I used to get major catches all the time! One day, it just all came together. Glad you like this, thank you!
What a lovely bit of oak. Nice .
Thank You Phil ( thank you Kamie )....Phil, White Oak is something you seldom turn & is probably my favorite wood...Putting the old hand tools to use, love the old hand planes !!...Beautiful "Platter" (my vote) Phil and again you worked through the bad, punky wood and still had room to create a wonderful turning....tm
Thank you, Tuffy! I really like Oak in general and White Oak especially, too. I miss using my old hand planes but this was a great opportunity to dust one off.
Phil
Very nice workmanship.
Again, beautiful Phil.
Ah, that hand plane. A man after my own heart! When I was doing furniture work before getting sucked into this rabbit hole called wood turning, my favorite tools were the hand planes and scrapers. I got to the point that I was finishing all my pieces with just hand planes and scrapers and not using a sander or sandpaper if at all possible just because the cut grain looked so much better than the torn grain one gets with sanding. Now of course, sanding is a principal part of the turning process.
I know what you mean, Mark. I miss woodworking! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop The work you turn out on the lathe though is awesome.
A nice centre table platter👏👏❤️🇬🇧
OK, thanks, Maud! 😃
WOW! It turned out really nice.
Thanks for giving all the information while you are working. It is always useful to have the size of the timber you are using together with lathe speed and tool size. How you approached a potentially problematic piece of wood was also very informative.
Thank you so much TheStanford01 for your really great comment, much appreciated!
Phil
Very beautiful love it great job Phil
Thumbs way up Phil.
Another great job Phil
Whatever you decide to call it Phil it’s yet another very fine piece & would look grand in the centre of any table. Apologies for being late to enjoy watching & comment but my wife collapsed yesterday. It’s turned my world upside down. Best regards as always from the U.K.
Well, Geof, I don't know what to say to this except I'm sorry, stay positive and I wish her and you only the best.

Thanks for the kind words Phil, probably the result of two weeks intensive “C” treatment. Life can be so cruel.
Nice work as always, Phil.
That is a really nice sharpening job!
Nice, another piece of art
Great looking piece Phil.👍
Absolutely gorgeous, awesome job Mr.Phil
OK well the search begins for a bath that shape but I dont fancy my chances Great turn as usual Phil another piece I would happy to have on my mantle shelf
Great job, as ever Phil, thanks so much for sharing . Jules, Droitwich, England
Thank you, Jules!
Phil
Great bowl or platter and really nice grain.
I guess I would call it a winged bowl. It might be shallow enough to be a dish but I think of a dish as being smaller. Very nice grain on the White Oak and your getting by the rotten parts was handled well. Bravo!!!
Rick Turns called this shape "blatter" which is a great term I had forgotten, David. Winged bowl definitely fits, too. Glad you like it, thank you!
You are a great wood turner!
I love sanding because it makes up for the lack of my turning skill, thanks ,Bryan McCabe, aka, woodbutcher
LOL! Yeah, it can take care of some whoopsies along the way, Bryan!
Excellent job 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🍻
Another good bowl.
Good work Phil!
Good save! Next piece with that much punk should come get processed in my Cactus Juice set-up!
Gorgeous piece!
I love this. Very nice job Sir.
Very nice piece of wood (bowl/platter too).
Хорошее блюдо получилось . Успехов Вам в труде и творчестве.
большое Вам спасибо!
Phil, I really enjoy your videos. Nice pace and the little self-deprecation from time to time is fun. Having experiences
‘Oopses’ too I am glad you don’t edit them out... but show ways to overcome them. Well done.
It turned out very nice.
Nice plater, I like it.
Thanks Phil for another informative video. I always pick up something that should improve my turning using traditional tools. I still fall back on my Easy Wood Tools, bout I’m slowly broadening my skills by expanding my tool skills. Thanks. Cheers, Tom
I liked that a lot! I also like the slightly more explanatory narrative on this one - I think it gets the viewer (this viewer anyway) more involved in the "journey".
Thank you, Steve! It's a fine line between "narrative" and just too dang long. I try my best, I'm glad you noticed and enjoyed it!
That is a gorgous platter Phil!!! Nice1 , I've really been enjoying your channel, VERY inspirational!
So nice to read your comment, Doug, thank you very much!
Phil
Hi Phil, Whatever it is called I know one thing it's beautiful. As ever the way you explain your thought process helps us other mear mortals get better at what we try to do. Great work Phil. Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw!
Beautiful!
Great looking bowl 👍
Since watching Phil, I have begun my turning with " mask and face shield on". And It's great to have someone who explains what is going on. Good job!!
Glad to help, thank you for the great comment, Gary! 😊
👍 love it kirk
Great job 👍
Wooowww....
Ok professor Phil!! You do gorgeous work! The work is outstanding but the process is even more important as you have taught me how to do a bowl/platter square edge!!! I saved the video and will revisit it as I have a similar piece of oak!
Thank you, Larry! Good luck with yours!
Phil
Nicely done phil!(as usual)👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you, Mike!
Nice piece PHIL and a great finish makes some of mine look half done. Barry
Hi Phil, Bowl...Platter...doesn't matter...it's a beautiful piece! The edges are always a hardly decision ;-) Leave the edges total natural and just smooth it or square it... Would have been a posibility to use your SandOFlex...but anyway, it turned out very nice the way you did it!
Thank you, Gunther!
Very nice.
So beautiful
😊
😄👍🏼, Beautiful!
Thank you, Roma!
Very nice Phil! I can't wait to try a square edged bowl. Gil
They are fun, Gil, good luck with yours!
Truly spectacular piece, Phil. I sure like that plane you used! I don’t think I have seen that particular model before. Obviously, used in the hands of a master!
Bowl? Platter? Could it be the famous Australian square edge platterpus? I can’t believe I said that. That’s really stupid! Oh well, as the baby dinosaur said: “Gotta love me!!” Sorry, Phil. I better quit now!
Great video, my friend. Enjoyed it very much! 👍👍👍👍🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Safe turning,
.....Gord
LOL! You are cracking me up today, Gord! "Platterus!" Hahaha!
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
Phil
Very pretty
Thank you, Hazel! 😊
Another beauty but I'll think of more later, i was in jospital all day and thinker not thinking well
😴
Most important is to get well, Marge. Follow doctors orders and rest! Wishing you a speedy and full recovery!
Phil
I would consider it a platter. Square is not a usual thing and that makes me like it more. It is a pretty wood.
Okey dokey, it's a platter, Lynda! 😊
Very nice!
I'm glad you like it, Kandie, thank you!
Nice one Phil.. But it seems I don't receive notifications of late, of your brilliant Woodturning, bell clicked and all, 👍 never mind.. I just just look out on UA-cam... So I don't miss watching your workings on the lathe, I enjoy your creations. And this bowl is great !
Thank you, Laurie! UA-cam has had issues lately, lots of changes. I'm sure the notification will be working again. I'm glad you found me, thank you for looking!
Phil
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Phil, I must say and I'm being honest .. of all the woodturners I've seen on UA-cam plus others.. you Phil are the best, you show / explain / all you do and use, which in my eyes ... is damn good and really helpful.. love your attitude in with all aspects from start to finish of your working on the lathe.
I enjoy and love all you create with all of your challenges of timber you undertake. 👍👌
@@lauriecremore5601 Thank you, Laurie, you've brightened my day!
Belo trabalho!
Muito obrigado!
We never know what’s in the wood until it’s carved out!! Great work Phil love your work keep them coming!!!
Great job, Phil I have always hated turning oak it always seem to rust every think it touches...
You must be turning it green, Rob? This was very dry, no issues. Thank you for watching and commenting, much appreciated!
That’s Phil, another awesome bowl, thanks for sharing 🙃
Another piece with a great deal of character! Pieces like this seem to evoke a thought process that takes the viewer elsewhere. For me it back to the old west. A platter/bowl like that would seem right at home on a chuck wagon in a wagon train. Easy to hold on to while eating rabbit stew! Thanks Phil!
Sounds like you watch the old westerns as much as I do, Bob! Or, you really just have a creative imagination. Either way, yum, rabbit stew! LOL!
Phil
You come up with some beautiful pieces Phil and it's a great pleasure to watch you do it. A real inspiration, thank you.
Between the grain, the cracks and the sawmarks your bowl tells a story. I'd put apples in it. Any colour. Thank you very much for sharing.
Turned out great, well done! Always inspirational, thanks again Phil from MT!
Hi Phil Great Video and Great Piece White Oak, Great Job Platter/Bowl Thank You for Sharing My Friend👍 . This Virus. Be Safe Friend From That Horrible Coronavirus is Spread Quickly You and your Family Take Care 🙏🙏👍
👍👍👍👌👌
👍
This is a really good looking whatchamacallit. Beautiful grain and color.
Great turn Phil! Also, good job bringing out the block plane. That did the trick on those edges. As wood turners I think we (at least I do...) sometimes forget that it's just wood and we're not bound to just turning tools to get the end result. Thanks for sharing, V
It does look good and I believe that the bottom has the more character
And once again Phil, a beautiful piece! You can use the center as a bowl for your crackers and the corners for four different cheeses! All you need now is a nice bottle of wine and beautiful goblet to drink it from! Better get busy my friend!
That would make a great lap bowl beautiful grain nice job as usual
It’s a Blatter. I would have never thought that piece of wood would have such a nice piece in it. You found it, nice turning.
Yes, I had forgotten Rick Turns coined that term, John. Thank you!
Phil
This is exactly why Thursday has become one of my favorite days. Love this and love your channel.
Thank you very much, Cheryl!
Nice job again. I always enjoy watching you get the most out of the pieces you have. Thank you for sharing them with us.
Hi Phil,
That`s a really pretty bowl... platter... plowl...
I love oak, and luckily it`s quite plentiful here 😃
Thanks for sharing
Best regards
Lars
I love Oak too, Lars. Lucky for you to have it at your disposal!
Phil
Excellent! While oak is not a wood I like working with, that turned beautifully! Well done!
Thank you, Dave! I just find Oak to be "predictable" and that gives me a feeling of comfort.
Phil
I have some oak spindles to make tool handles, as well as a couple chunks of white oak spalted burl that have been in my wood stack for years. Soon will have a great shop space and will have at 'em!
Phil very nice pool or bowatter! 😁👍🇺🇸
Really like that plane too! I had a good size collection of old planes, but have sold off most of them.
It's a truly lovely bowl with platter dimensions, beautiful. I love to see how you stick with difficult pieces and turn them into an item of beauty... the grain is gorgeous on the bottom and the top has its own character... superb job Phil, thanks for another adventure 🙌🏽
Thank you very much, Ruthlyn, I'm so glad you like it!
I just picked up a few pieces of punky oak. I feel better now about turning them since watching your video. Thanks for the confidence builder. Cheers mate!
At 5:20 mark excellent advice and much appreciated. Any and all advice is truly appreciated Phil 👍🏻
What a fantastic creation Phil, I would say it's a bowl rather than a platter, those punky areas and cracks were making me nervous!
Top work mate
Thank you, Will!
Really nice work, Phil! That turned out great!
I was worried that corner was going to fly away, great save.
Phil,
Another beautiful piece. I really look forward to seeing your videos pop up in my notifications every week. Your approach to woodturning is enjoyable and exciting to watch. You, Papa1947, and Al Furtado like to turn the more unusual wood. All of you are great at finding the best way to capture the natural beauty of the wood and to leave a little of the "history" of the wood in each piece. Great job!
That's beautiful, Phil, whatever you want to call it. I, too, like oak and that piece has really nice grain. The finish just made it pop that much more. I'm also glad you didn't renew your membership in the funnel club.
Trying to stay away from the funnels, Bill! LOL!
Another masterpiece. Love it!👍🏼❤️
