- Very rare TV film, with great performances. A fictionalized, dark account of the hostage crisis in the 1980's. Colin Firth played John McCarthy, a journalist. The film tells his and his fellow hostages' life stories and how their families held out under the stress. For authenticity, all the scenes were made with the real actors who had to actually get used to the brutal conditions described in the film.
The cast included Colin Firth, Kathy Bates, Ciaran Hinds, Natasha Richardson.
Part 4
Extraordinary and powerful series....should be shown again and again....thank you for bringing it out of obscurity...
That final speech by Brian Keenan is so moving. Nowhere is the power of the human mind, and the ability to overcome the worst of what man can do to his fellow humans, more vividly illustrated than in the case of these men.
Only when they were released and told the world their story, did we learn what ‘hostage’ actually meant. And the reality was infinitely worse than what we could ever have imagined.
God bless them.
I always love Colin
Colin just spectacular

Because unfortunately this film has never been released on DVD... There are only a few VHS copies available.
@@ColinTheFirth - I have a DVD copied from VHS but the quality could be better. A shame it was never put on DVD. It was a wonderful movie. Complain to HBO, they made it!
I recorded this at the time and do have a vhs somewhere, but I couldn't say I'd be able to find it. I did want to ask though, this is slightly edited for some reason, do you know why? I thought I must have imagined scenes such as when Tom Sutherland asked "What kept you?" John replied that he had been mowing the lawn! But there was definitely a scene where Peggy meets and speaks to Frank Reid. If this is the only version you'd ever seen you probably would never know.
I'm not the most politically minded individual but this film really made me think. I thought all the actors were excellent; forgot at times that they were actors!
An amazing film, a real eye opener, incredible acting, felt as if I was in there with them, thankyou for sharing it,
