Nice one! Any questions ask - but it's similar to playing live with a Game Boy - just way more powerful. It's kind of like a mini Ableton/clip launcher in a way.
It's actually pretty different. Live mode is one of the strengths of the Polyend devices. Particularly the Play. There's no punch in effects like that on the M8, though you can hook up a midi controller and assign cc values to different parameters, which is what I do live.
@@StephenMcLeod Thanks for the info...been "boning" up on your great vids. Can you have chains on the song page that are not part of the song so you could jump to any one you set up.
@@ProfessorWes Yep! That's how I use it. Chains on the song page which have blank rows in between, so effectively set up like... Ableton clips that can be launched, for example.
After watching these 3 tutorial videos I think I have a pretty good idea of how to use the M8. Maybe once my order actually arrives and I start messing with it I’ll stumble across something that I can ask you more about, but until then I’ll just keep going over these. Oh, and of course I will watch your other stuff too 😀
Awesome! I'm glad it helped. These are the main areas I think. I'll have a think to see if there are other things I can look at which might be helpful for folks.
Great tutorial on this man! Will definitely be going back to watch all of these, thank you for making them! 🙌 It's awesome hearing your Liberal Exodus tracks on the M8 too, really looking forward to all the music you make on this!!! 🤘🐀
It’s extraordinary how much work has to be done to get the M8 to behave properly in a live situation. I’ve had the M8 for a while now and have a tracker background and I think it’s just a bit of a messy system and the LSDJ method is pretty out of date in unnecessary in 2023. The entirely numbering system for phrases and chains it’s just why!? As is the use of the hexadecimals. It also has a very impractical way over overseeing what’s going on in every track compared to Renoise, Octamed etc. The amount of shortcuts that have to be remembered are also kind of absurd. It’s an interesting concept but it’s just something a lot of people are overhyping.
I would love to see more performance oriented possibilities with the M8 built in, similar to how the Polyend Play etc have done it, though the physical controls make that a bit more difficult. It's really not that complicated or difficult to set up loops though - it's the same kind of system as Ableton or the Akai Force - just with a different UI. You can also use MIDI controllers for greater control in a live environment (which is exactly what I do). If you aren't a fan of LSDJ's way of working then you definitely won't enjoy the M8 either way though!
Nice! on another note, did you ever try using Cajones+ on the Polyend Tracker? It works if you load it in the games section. I have a video about it on my channel. I m doing random noisy stuff with it just as proof of concept(!). Cool to have a tracker inside a tracker! And there's performance shortcuts in Cajones too! Man, you sold me on the M8 with the polyrhythms.. I ve been trying to do it in the Polyend but it's harder than let's say, phrases in Renoise. You have to do the bars length trick as you explained.
These are so helpful, thanks. I didn’t realize you could have a different time signature per track, do you mean by adding a hop, or changing the groove, or something else?
All of the above! There are different ways, some which will make more sense than others depending on what you want to do. :) You can also have chains of different lengths as well which will play simultaneously which gives you the different cross rhythmical stuff.
So DJ Sasha said he does it all in the Ableton live mode. I would love to see if a person could pull off a cover of one of his songs. Magnetic North or something. Fuck man. This thing is amazing. I need to get the Teensy Version.
@@marko1790 Just wanted to make sure I understand! It's always worth bringing up in the Discord, though it's not something I personally would use. I think the question would be where the new row would copy to... as there isn't necessarily a clear logical place that would make sense across the board.
Hey! I sampled you in my new M8 track! 😀
Haha no way! That is wild. Awesome track too! The link for anybody following along: ua-cam.com/video/SFl1NB6KJFI/v-deo.html
@@StephenMcLeod Hey Hey, Thanks for checking it out! 😀 👊
Dude, that's bad ass!!
7:00 - thanks! It was not obvious from the manual that leaving gaps will cause the playback to loop, this is awesome!
I'm glad it's useful!!
Great tutorial! This is helping me towards my inevitable purchase as live playing was something I was unsure about 👌

Super video this really helped me, only had the M8 2 days now…live mode is very powerful🤗😎
I'm glad it was useful!
Finally! An explanation of the FE. I see that a lot, but I never understood what they were
There's two big camps. 00 v FE. I am firmly in the FE camp!
So happy for this tutorial. This live mode will let me compose and perform like I do on the Deluge which is great news.
Glad it was useful! I'd like to check out a Deluge sometime...
@@StephenMcLeod I am awaiting my M8 and hoping Live mode will be somewhat similar to Performance mode on the Polyend.

Loving my M8! Where is there a discussion board? On the discord I only see announcements. I can’t find a pattern either.
I think on the Discord you have to like a message or something to get access to speak :)
@@StephenMcLeod right, thanks 😉
is it suitable for live sampling when remixing in a DJ performance?
I'm honestly not that sure as I haven't done a bunch of live sampling that way. Sorry!
So DJ Sasha said he does it all in the Ableton live mode. I would love to see if a person could pull off a cover of one of his songs. Magnetic North or something. Fuck man. This thing is amazing. I need to get the Teensy Version.
Def check out the Teensy! it's brilliant.
Is there a shortcut way to “save currently playing to new row”?
As in, a selection of different chains that are active, and put them into a complete new row? I don't believe so, no.
@@StephenMcLeod Sorry, yeah, you got me. My understanding of the terminology is still shit. Worthwhile feature request or pretty unnecessary?

@@StephenMcLeod Ah yeah, gotcha. I mean, it’s copying 8 things max really, so probably no big deal. Thanks for all the knowledge!
@@marko1790 No worries! Good luck :D
it needs a sort of "jog wheel" like the teenage engineering TP-7 offers it
I'm not sure that would add much to the functionality in practice!
sure it does for DJ live performance
