hello guys, I've been playing the violin for 8 years, I've changed 3 odes, not because I couldn't, but because they don't teach properly, the 4th teacher who teaches me now is one of the best violin teachers, she taught me all the bowing techniques, so that I don't have difficulty after the pieces, ( in the 1st conservatory I started, I was in 1st place for 3 years, no scales, no progress, just a little song, only in the 2nd conservatory, I started seriously, but even there it was better, I had to leave because they didn't give me the harmony degree, now I'm in the 3rd conservatory with my teacher who helps me a lot, thank you joy, I see you from the first videos on UA-cam, you help too, thank you🎻

P.S. I am of the opinion that Jochims extended index finger while being rather effeminate still may have validity if it helped him feel the musical passage . I kind of like his extended index finger in that he was being delicate with the bow and extremely tentative with the notes. I have tryed the Russian bow hold but was left feeling strained. In my early training IT was suggested manicure separators might be used to keep bow fingers separated. I think I might have tryed something similar but felt it was too awkward. Might wine corks be cut up and used to keep bow fingers separated? Maybe just plain toilet paper between fingers to keep them lightly separated. Thanks Joy! Nov.30, 2023 c.e. usa😅

Hi user-do5, even though in general the right index finger stays curved on the bow stick, there are moments with specific dynamics the right index finger gets straighter (I think this is what you mean by "extended index finger"). All the fingers on bow grip should be flexible and be ready to re-adjust as the music constantly changes. So if Joachim(Jochims?) or any other violinists find a way to have a better control of the bow in a relaxed way ( with or without extended finger), I think it should be treated with a respect. I admire your analysis and careful observation. Happy music making!

So if I understand you correctly Instructor Joy, LOVE is a many splendors thing is predominantly a finger tip bow hold? I am currently working on Meditation and have adopted using a rubber band on the transom of my bows. I use the rubberband to hold my ring finger snug against frog body. This seems to help give a cat like claw grip to the frog and I seem to have less skating problems. What is your opinion Joy on Jochims extended index finger and is this behavior valid for a solo violin student? I've been told no By Eric Mrugala but want to get your thoughts on the subject.

Dear user-do5, thanks for sharing. Regarding the extended index finger on bow grip, are you talking about straightened right index finger on the bow grip? In general all fingers on bow grip should stay flexible and be ready to adopt and re-adjust as the dynamics of music constantly changes. Even though the right index finger most of times stays wrapped around the bow stick, there are moments when the right index finger gets slightly straighter and even comes off the bow stick a bit when using heavy down bow among other cases. There is no one ideal bow grip for all different kinds of strokes and dynamics. We need to constantly adopt and re-adjust the bow grip as interesting music often offers many different change of tone colours. I hope this gave you an idea. Happy practising!
