In this video, 8 games released in 1991 are shown running on both machines so you can see how different (or similar) they were. Games like Super Monaco GP, Turrican 2, Extreme, Alien Storm and more.
Thanks for watching and let me know in the comments section below who "wins".

Cpc 464 kid (zx spectrum +2 sold out before my hard work to persuade my parents to combine my birthday and christmas present into one worked , happy disappointment or disappointed happiness )
Harrier Attack, Roland on the ropes, Sultans Maze, Paper Boy, Ghosts n Goblins, A motor Bike one and Fruit machine, then Commando and Ghostbusters had me happy on a rainy day in scotland so ......... I remember copying out the graphics programs and got the 21 card game to work after hours typing in the code from the instructions manual and saving it to tape, but it loaded and worked , for a kid that felt amazing , watching random numbers surrounded by a line to form a card make a working game it was mystical .

Amstrad graphic looks like it could compete with Amiga, than Spectrum. I had C64 and seems like graphics wise Amstrad is a little bit ahead...at least in some games.

I like pretty much all retro-hardware, but I think people should bear the following in mind when comparing the Speccy to the Amstrad:
    1. The Spectrum launched in 1982, whereas the Amstrad came out in 1984. It's true that they use the same processor, but in terms of chronology it makes more sense to compare the Amstrad to the Atari ST, which launched less than a year later in 1985.
    2. Many families were still using black and white televisions in the early 80's, at least for their computers if not for their front room. The only people I knew with a Amstrad CPC had bought the cheaper green screen package, so the Amstrad's colour capabilities didn't count for much.
    3. If you were shopping for a micro in 1985, the Spectrum would cost you £130 (not including TV) whereas the CPC464 would cost you £250 with the monochrome monitor or £450 with the colour monitor. I'm not sure why anyone bought the colour CPC in 1985, since you could get a 520ST for a similar price... maybe I have got the prices wrong or the ST was delayed in the UK market?
    4. Comparing the 1985 models, the Spectrum had weaker graphics capability, but the sound was identical and it offered more memory (128K versus 64K). The reduced palette of the Spectrum also meant that graphics data was more compact, meaning that screen updates normally felt snappier and more frames could be stored in memory.
This is all based on my recollection of the time, plus some research on Wikipedia. I'm happy to edit this if any of my information turns out to be incorrect.

Thank you for this. Confirms that the Spectrum is a national embarrassment for Britain. The CPC seems a generation ahead.

Saying as not-Brit, I am thinking there's nothing to be embarrassed about. Speccy was something like an equivalent of Raspberry Pi - at least first Pi version, before company went nuts with pricing, riding wave of popularity.
Cheap hardware to put under roofs of families with lower incomes. Good tool to get into coding, actually designed with this in mind. Gaming was never a primary purpose and yet, some people did wonders with the machine.

I loved my 6128 . Wish it had never been sold.

I wanted a CPC back in the 80s when I read the adverts for it in computer magazines. Fantastic computer, but came out a bit late for it to have a bigger commercial success (at leas in my opinion).

The Amstrad might have had better colours in certain games, but the speecys frame rate was mostly always better than the Amstrad

Only game here where the Spectrum seems snappier is Predator 2, otherwise they're the same speed but the Spectrum looks horrific.

    1. Extreme, Spectrum but just as both look good, graphics snappier on the Speccy.
    2. Super Monaco gp, don't like either to be fair.
    3. Mega Phoenix, hard one again but personal preference is the Speccy.
    4. Alien Storm, id go with the Amstrad but only based on the colour.
    5. Turrican 2, terrible on both but id say Amstrad.
    6. Outrun Europa, Amstrad winner on this game.
    7. Predator 2, Amstrad with the better colour palette.
    8. Hudson Hawk, Spectrum winner outright.

      Mostly agree.
Super Monaco GP is quite playable on Spectrum. Much faster than on CPC and not that bad.
Extreme I liked more on CPC.

I had both, the Amstrad CPC destroyed the Speccy. Still have my Amstrad in the loft.

I wouldn't say that mate, once the 128k sound chip came in, it improved a lot of the games, and I preferred the detail of speccy graphics better than the Amstrad.

Speccy put a good fight and some titles I would rather play on it. But to be fair, most of these games are not that great in gameplay and do not run well on either systems. The only highlight is Turrican 2, where CPC coders stood up to the task. Great version.

The CPC can be much more colorful, but a shame it got so many lazy Spectrum ports that didn't take advantage of the colors. The Spectrum is a bit faster but the color clashing makes it hard to use colors and the sound capabilities are terrible on the original 16/48k. A shame neither of them got hardware sprites and scrolling.

Turrican 2 on the Spectrum looks like memory corruption 😂 I don't envy the poor blokes who had to port an Amiga gem all the way down to this embarrassment of a computer.

The C64 graphics are so blurry, and the colours are so bland ! And with it's weak 1 MhZ CPU, it really struggles to keep a good framerate !
The Spectrum absolutely owned the C64 and still does in the demo scene to this day. C64 owners are still salty about their weak machine.
