  • Hello and welcome to the fourth episode of Commodore 64 versus Amstrad CPC.
In this video, 8 games released in 1988 are shown running on both machines so you can see how different (or similar) they were.
Games like Cybernoid, Last Ninja 2, Operation Wolf and 5 others.
Thanks for watching and let me know in the comments section below who "wins".
And, of course, see you in the next RetroNoName episode

    There's a lesson here:
Hire competent programmers to code game on CPC - you get Operation Wolf.
Hire people who wouldn't code their way out of a paper bag: you get Last Ninja and Pac-Mania.
Owning CPC must have been like looking for diamons on a minefield. If you find game made by people who knew what to do with hardware, you were in for a treat. But rest, well... 😂

C64 didn't do pretty but it did do gritty realistic. I loved all the 8bits because of their differences and the differences between Amstrad and C64 was quite significant
The amstrad moved it's chunky visuals mostly in a chunky way as well and the pretty yet sometimes overly vivid jewel like visuals worked for it. The C64 has it's classy super smooth moving of graphics and the realistic muted visual palette better worked for that too giving a more natural tone that better mimicked more the tones you see in real life. I think they were both great and some games I just prefer because of it

    1. Cybernoid, good on both, graphics more colourful on the CPC but sound better on the 64.
    2. Marauder, 64 wins in all departments. Incredible in game soundtrack.
    3. Operation Wolf, 64 wins again.
    4. Dan Dare 2, 64 wins but CPC has nice colourful graphics.
    5. Last ninja 2, LOL 64 wins but we all know that.
    6. Impossible mission 2, again a no brainer, 64 all the way.
    7. Beyond the ice palace, 64 is my pick again though CPC has nice graphics again.
    8.
    8. Pacmania, 64 storms all the choices in this video.

Op wolf definitely smoother and easier to control on the cpc. But generally I'd agree. Beyond the Ice Palace is awful on both.

      1. No, they just have different soundtracks. Better graphics and colors on the CPC.
      2. As one who didn't own any of those machines I prefer the more colorful version on the CPC.
      3. The CPC has far better graphics and colors.
      4. Simplistic graphics with the well know dirty grey tint of the C64 plus its unplayable.
      5. Speccy port, no comparison.
      6.Speccy port, no comparison.
7.on the CPC its blocky but colorful. I think I prefer the C64 port.

From a gamer's point of view that was the only advantage of the CPC. C64 had better scrolling, better audio, better resolution, more games. It also had a more robust keyboard. And it continues to impress with titles such as Eye of the Beholder.
The CPC, especially the diskette versions, was much better for learning computing. It had an awesome manual, an easy BASIC, LOGO, CP/M and a more programming-leaning community. You could learn a lot from a cheap Amstrad.

    • @renaudg

@@axonis2306The Amstrad certainly had higher and more resolution choices than the C64. The keyboard was also definitely better than the cramped one on the C64 which constantly needs shift keys.

Couple of wins for the cpc. Dan dare 2 is virtually unplayable on the c64 (it's too fast - I bought it back in the day as loved tbe first game), whereas CPC is slower and more playable. And op wolf is definitely smoother and easier to play on the CPC. Rest generally a c64 win due to sid/gameplay.

I have to wonder why they didn't do The Last Ninja 2 and Pac-Mania on the CPC in a lower video mode with more colours. The CPC holds up well graphically against the C64 except lacking sprites and hardware scrolling.
The CPC sound isn't as good but the SID is the best of the 8-bit sound chips so you can't expect anything else to sound as good. I'd say the Atari POKEY is the second best 8-bit sound chip. The POKEY can sound quite a bit like the SID if you don't mind using up all the CPU cycles.

Probably because they ported ZX Spectrum code to the CPC

    • @Edgel-in6bs
      @Edgel-in6bs 7 місяців тому

Tbf mate, the lack of sprites and hardware scrolling in a machine which took a lot of memory to move graphics meant some of the colorful CPC games took an awful lot of effort.
Re. LN2, as others noted, probably the time to create on both machines vs the time to create amstrad graphics from scratch vs likely sales is your answer. Have to remember games in 80s were a balance of cost&time vs profit - rather than the best they could be!

I sure love the C64, but the CPC port of Impossible Mission 2 has the C64 beat when it comes to "unintentionally looking like a chick" '80s action hero video game aesthetic.
They're tied on the "unintentionally looking like a chick" aesthetic in Beyond the Ice Palace, though.

    • @nickolasgaspar9660

CPC games have a superior aesthetic when compared to the C64's washed out color palette.(Speccy ports excluded).

    • @adroharv5140
      @adroharv5140 3 місяці тому

@@nickolasgaspar9660 just different I would say. One is a sometimes a lovely vibrant delight of colour at the expense of looking a little too overdone and of course tending too move in a chunky way and the other is a more realistic tone that can look rather dull at times but compliments that smooth movement. I love the C64 with it's gritty realistic colour tones when put with the right games but I also love the Amstrad for particular games that just look gorgeous and I'd even argue I also think the chunky scrolling is a part of the charm. For some though it's not at all appealing for being so overly vivid at times and the movement the Amstrad manages can make their eyes bleed. Sometimes Amstrad's palette is just too much and the more realistic scenes in games can be a turn off like grass of sky and ground
Bobby Bearing for example is gorgeous on the Amstrad but Way of the Exploding Fist is too overly vibrant when compared to realistic washed out tone on C64. It comes down to what you like most in how the game is shown of course and both machines have games that show that off better I would say. I like Bobby Bearing too on C64 as another example but it's because the atmosphere from the washed out palette feels cold and I rather like that on occasion with Bobby Bearing. Same with something like Manic Miner which feels just right atmosphere wise being it feels a little cold compared but Sorcery looks like crap on the C64

Lets be honest Operation Wolf the CPC os the definitive 8 bit version. C64 though beats the Amstrad and other 8 bits in the majority with its hardware scrolling/sprites/sound capabilities. There are some shit programming games on the C64 where the programmers were jist damn right lazy.

The powerful SID seems to have the same problem as the powerful Amiga. Music and sound effects at the same time. It sounds great, but where are the sound effects? A Spectrum beeper has often better sound effects than the C64. Even beeper sound effects are better than no sound effects. C64 hardware is limited
