    History: A Gatlinburg Institution
In the winter of 1953, local innkeeper Rel Maples contacted Everett Kircher and asked him to build a chairlift on a mountain behind his property in Gatlinburg, Tennessee after reading an article in AAA magazine about Kircher's chairlift expertise gained from operating a ski area in Michigan. After meeting at the proposed site, Mr. Maples agreed to lease the land to Kircher to construct and operate a chairlift himself, and Gatlinburg sightseeing history was made.
Kircher purchased a ski lift from Sugar Bowl Ski Area in California, dismantled it, and transported it to his father's Studebaker dealership in Rochester, Michigan where the work of engineering and rebuilding the lift began.
Kircher's father made the trip to Gatlinburg to scout the area and coordinate labor, and Kircher soon followed after closing Boyne Mountain Ski Area in Michigan in the spring. A survey of the site lead to the construction of a road to the top, and the difficult process of pouring footings for the lift towers before the team was finally able to erect the lift structure and hang the chairs. It was the first chairlift ever built in Dixieland, and opened to the public in 1954.

Showing my age...when I was a kid, I used to go to Gatlinburg several times a year with my family. We always rode the Skylift every time because it was my favorite thing to do there. I remember it was the same ride up, but all that was at the top was one small building that sold snacks, toys, and novelties. I love that it's gotten so much bigger.

Thank you for this awesome video. I will be traveling to Gatlinburg in May '24 and wanted to put this on my list. I am afraid of heights and it makes me angry. Let me explain that. I love the view from heights, the scenery, taking pictures. But part of my brain appears to fight this, lol. My knees feel like jelly and I can't get myself to walk forward. Once at the location I love it. If someone takes me, it's all good. So, I know I can get on the lift, I know I can walk the path. But I was worried about the bridge. But after watching this...I could see & feel your walk across it. I think I can achieve this!! And I can't wait to go get some beautiful pictures!! Thank you for this.

I've been before but it's been a long time. I was a small child. I remember a little but not a lot. Haven't been since. Would love to see it now and revisit some memories what I can remember since it's changed it's name and look and added new things like the tulip tower and the sky bridge. It was a very informative video. Thanks for the reminenise of some of my childhood as I do remember the yellow chair lift. That hasn't changed. They did keep that part of it.

When I was a kid. That’s 50 plus years ago. Used to be a huge huge lodge at the top of that mountain. In the lodge had everything the gift shop had plus a huge ice skating rink. Also the coaster ride started on top of that mountain. It was super long going down that hill. It’s completely changed through the years and will always go back.

Operations at the Gatlinburg SkyLift Park are weather permitting. If there is only light rain in the area, operations will continue. If there is heavy precipitation, high winds, thunder, or lightening in the area, SkyLift Park ticket sales will stop until the system has moved out of the area and management feels it is safe to resume operations. Also, if there is snow in the area, operatons will continue unless there is ice build-up on the SkyBridge. If there is ice, we will halt operations until the ice thaws out on the bridge.
Anakeesta pretty much has the same procedures.

Gatlinburg SkyLift Park prohibits the operation of all unmanned aerial systems, including drones, on or above park property. I believe it is the same at Anakeesta & flying your drone in any National Parks is prohibited KT.

We will have a SkyLift Park vs Anakeesta video coming out soon. If only one, I would go with Anakeesta because 1. There is a way to get to the top via vehicle & Brie does not like the chairlifts. 2. More to do in our opinion at Anakeesta. Hopefully that helps ND!

You really should ask the owner's first before you go onto other's channels and tell them you can get them up there free, the owner would be losing money for everytime you offer it as free, you have a lifetime pass, I don't think I would jeopardize losing it instead of abusing it.. just my personal opinion..
