It's kind of odd, but I always loved the Shimmering Flats, and always looked forward to questing there. The zone should by any means be considered boring, but I love it. There's something special about getting there, picking up 10+ quests and just running around in a giant circle, and return to get almost a full level's worth of exp. At level 30+ is also when your character really starts to feel like your own, and you begin getting some of your iconic class abilities. Call me strange, but Shimmering Flats remains one of my favorite vanilla zones of all time.
Fully agree. The simplicity of the zone and quests are a nice break from the intricacies of previous zones. Here are no "needles" to climb or caves to explore. Just run, slay and gather.
I remember doing this questline with my cousin back in vanilla. When we finished it we equipped the trinket and rode around the shimmering flats singing Queen's Under Pressure but instead of singing "People on streets" we sung "Carrot on a Stick! E da de da de!" while going 3% quicker. I will never forget it. Good times.
The "middling middle" was totally different in the original game. It was a literal and proverbial desert. When instant messengers were barely in existence and texting cost money per character, you used the mmo to socialise. It was very easy to find players and do things in the early game, and if you made it to late game it was probably with a guild. But in the 40s and 50s everything that gave experience became further and further away from the social hubs. As a middler schooler I remember it took me a year to get from 40 to 63 because I preferred hanging out in Goldshire or Ironforge and talking to friends instead of spending hours running to Tanaris and back.
Had a similar experience! Took me an obscene amount of time to get from ~40 to 60, because I spent so much time Durotar, Thunder Bluff and Westfall with my Troll
Its fascinating: I think gameplay wise we can all agree, the Shimmering Flats and its ilk are absolutely atrocious, but I loved the kdea of areas in WoW that weren't made entirely with player utility in mind. There are places in the world that just *are*, regardless of whether that serves humans or not, it makes sense that some zones in WoW should be the same
Your sound design is unmatched with any other WoW content creator. You're extremely talented at it, like on the level of Planet Earth or other such massive budgeted documentaries. You elevate it to an art and it's awesome to see in the context of the incredible world of vanilla WoW.
Zul'farrak always seemed like an exceptional case. It's quest variety and how spread across the world they are (and the fact it's an 'outdoor' dungeon) is a real treat The mallet especially feels like a precursor to something like the Sceptor of the Shifting sands. Would absolutely love to see you cover that in the same fashion in the future! You did a fantastic job of intertwining the Zul lore with the story of the quest.
Amazing video! Got some trivia to add: Marvon Rivetseeker, a goblin situated in some trollish ruins in Tanaris, employs our brave heroes to collect so called "Gahz'ridian Ornaments". These can be found all over Tanaris. Luckily Marvon also hands out a nifty helmet to more easily locate them. These artifacts lend credence to the theory that Gahz'rilla may be revered as a god. Maybe as a replacement for a lost Loa? Though one must wonder if Aku'mai, the terror of Lathar'Lazal, also plays a role in this fascinating tale.
I still remember getting the Mallet solo on my lvl 50 priest on hardcore before you could party up. Most tense moments of my vanilla experiences ever. Thanks for bringing back those memories 😀!
There are luckily good alternatives to blizzard's nonsense. Like turtle wow. Great vanilla+ experience. They're even planning on remaking vanilla in a new engine.
"I need you to kill an ancient troll god." "I will accept your quest, what is at stake if this god of the deep is left to its devices?" "I bet my last 10 gold on my brother's podracer"
I know a lot of people didnt like the salted flats but I loved it, I have a core memory of gettign there with my two brothers, questing together around the race way, and then travling together through the gap in the hills to the south and into tanaris desert, engaging with aliance in the arena, exploring the desert finding the caverns of time just Ill never forget, and will always be sad that area is now a flooded mess
Your voice and sound mixing is absolutely wonderful. If it wasn't for how interesting the video is, I could fall asleep to it -- and I mean that in the best way possible.
I like to call the Shimmering Flats Quests the "Shimmering Gauntlet". I always look forward to running in a circle for 2 hours, make good XP, meet other adventurers and possibly get some fat loot! I never once didn't enjoy it ^^
Awesome dude. Love the long form showing of these unique quests from vanilla. I played a Paladin and went through the Mallet chain with another Paladin in one of the most memorable adventures I had in vanilla. Same Paladin I did the Verigan's Fist quest with. The Holy Duo. Shout out Roke from the OG Defias Brotherhood realm. Love the content man, Light keep you.
These videos have quickly became some of my favorites about WoW. It really makes me want to make wish I could level in the main world until 10 from max
Shimmering Flats has always held a special place in my World of Warcraft journey. There was something enchanting about its serene silence. I vividly remember my first visit and how I was inexplicably drawn to it. So much so, that during my first week off after starting the game, I spent the entire time there, fighting nothing but Basilisks from level 31 to 32, leading up to my first level 40 with my rogue.
When I started play WoW in TBC as a Blood Elf rogue After lvl 20 I always went for one route Barrens>thousand needles>Desolace >Tanaris I love wow deserts. It's atmosphere, music feeling of a place far-far away.
I really like the flats. It's just non-stop grinding, then leads into a bunch of longer-lasting, far-traveling fetchquests that has you coming back to the zone even at level 45.
The history of trolls is something I find extremely fascinating as a part of WoW's lore so your segment covering the quest's continuation in the hinterlands was very intriguing to me. In the video you assumed that the altar of Zul was named after Zul the Prophet contrary to Loa. This is actually correct to assume that he had become a semi-godlike individual as the empire of Zul was the original troll civilization and the biggest most powerful variant (that would eventually split into the Gurubashi, Amani, and Drakkari. I doubt that Zul the prophet in BFA is the same Zul perhaps he was named in honor of the old empire or a figurehead within it. But the prophet himself saved countless Troll lives due to his foretelling of the cataclysm. King Rastakhan had disregarded such a disastrous prophecy and when it had been proven right Zul was seen as a savior of near godlike status. It would make a lot of sense to see trolls whose lives had been touched by this event worship him as a savior.
I’d love an mmo Nat Geo discovery channel type lore documentary series that just randomly deep dives into very intriguing and interesting topics for areas in a variety of different mmos like this. Discovering new worlds, cities and towns where you treat these places like the real areas that the devs wanted to create with its own history, culture of people and ongoings. I don’t personally play WoW but these are genuinely interesting with the combination of an interesting story to tell, your editing and voice over. I’ll be subscribing and watching this channel grow! You have a great talent!
Thanks for this amazing video. Please continue to make more videos in this format. This was very enjoyable and it really took me back with the music and everything was perfect. Thanks so much!❤🎉
What an absolutely amazing video. Was questing in the Shimmering Flats as I started the vid. God I wish these were 1h+ long videos, your voice and your way of describing the history is extremely soothing and perfect to listen to when leveling!
i love your videos, mate. this you always convey exactly the feeling i had playing classic back in the days. thank you for letting me relive some of what has been lost over the years.
Apart from the subject of the quest (which is really what WoW is all about, taking your time and read things, reflect on the journey it takes to go from A to B and what it implies), I again congratulate the choices of musics for your narrative. Fable, AoM, really great songs that captivates and fit the vibes of the game
I remember doing this quest WAYYY back in the day & it was no joke. There was a few parts where I had to beg for help to complete the quests. It was a great quest line overall though.
This adventure was one that stuck around in my mind when I was a fresh paladin back in vanilla. However, nothing will beat the old Tanaris zone music for me.
I have started my journey into WoW this weekend. There is a whole world full of stories now for me to explore. what a time to be a part-time employee 😁
Loved the lore dump. I did not know the world was one single landmass and was broken into the present continents. Very cool to learn more about the Troll empire too.
Dude I LOVE watching your videos! Your presentation style is amazing and your super chill voice really helps me just veg out and relax! Keep em’ coming!!!
I love your style of story telling; your style never bores me; keep it up! I would love to see a darker story covered in your style; like the Blood Elf Paladin Mount quest or the Stalvan Mistmantle one 😊
I love placing the smaller details of your videos. For example the use of music from Mount and blade works so well in these sequences. Very nice video!
I remember, nostalgically but not quite fondly, using all the riding enchantments to run around Eastern Plaugelands again and again to farm herbs so I could buy my level 60 mount 😅
That was a great video! I remember it quite well in the shimmering flats. I kind of enjoyed it. It was a very plain plane. It felt like it had been something bigger at some other point. Like some basin of water or something. It was, in all its deadness, somewhat awe-inspiring. I really enjoyed the background on the Zul Empire. Back in the day when it was rumored that night elves had been trolls but mutated through magic I did get really interested in this kind of wayback lore of the empires before the empires. I would love a video about the “Smiling Jim” quest in dustwallow - Smiling Jim in Theramore to the burnt down Tavern. Back in the day I did the quest on different characters, Horde and Alliance, even though it was a bit of a hassle. But I always thought that I might’ve missed something. Then I found out there is nothing to miss, it just never happened. That it had been meant to be a quest for Horde and Alliance to work together, on but it just never happened in the final version of the game. I would love to see a video about it. Also the “The missing diplomat” quest chain. Does anyone else feel like it was cut short, like it does not really resolve any of the questions that it created?
thanks for this, it was very nice to relax to and enjoy the scenery Your humor helps too :) Many of the music samples seem similar to old computer games of the '90s, like Heroes of Might & Magic II. That old midi feel :)
I did this quest in Wrath, and I'm pretty sure you don't need the mallet to summon Gahzrilla, to which I say BOO! Did the full quest anyway. Totally worth it, as it was indeed about the journey and not the destination.
Cataclysm's drastic change to the Thousand Needles did at least come with some cool things, despite probably making it less fun to explore as it once was. (I never had the chance to do so sadly, but I imagine there was more to do down below the "needles.") The Speedbarge for starters, is a neat little area, and you can start bar fights there. There's a dude selling Ice Cream somewhere too, if I recall that right. But I think the thing that hits me hardest is the dead Whale Shark in the waters. Really puts into perspective how powerful that flood coming in must've been if one of those bastards got stuck there. It also gave me a good fear of the water there generally, despite the fact there are no live Whale Sharks. Those things are massive and WILL put the fear of God into you, even if you're close to their level and if they catch you unaware. But I have got to say still, the original Thousand Needles was still much more interesting, but that's probably more because I never got to experience it myself.
To be fair, the best way to reward a player for traveling across the world is to give them a way to do it faster lmfao. Also, the the riding bonuses are actually slightly more, because they multiply on top of eachother, and that multiplies on top of your mount speed. The slightly higher than 9% bonus becomes 14.8% when riding a 60% mount, and 18.5% on an 100% mount.
It's kind of odd, but I always loved the Shimmering Flats, and always looked forward to questing there. The zone should by any means be considered boring, but I love it. Fully agree. The simplicity of the zone and quests are a nice break from the intricacies of previous zones. Here are no "needles" to climb or caves to explore. Just run, slay and gather.
Also I fucking love goblins.
The music and atmosphere at night is something else in that zone. I love it
my favorite questing was there and tanaris. I love it every time. Shame the flats are flooded :(
Probably reminds you of your bald head 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I remember doing this questline with my cousin back in vanilla. I feel like I'm watching a National Geographic documentary! This is so nice to watch.
Love seeing these quests presented in such a cinematic way. Watching your quest videos brings a lot of nostalgia 🙂
Same! Makes me want to play
extremely based age of mythology music enjoyer
Prostagma?
Vulome!
Also Medieval II march music!
I was going to ask which track this was lol
The reason I subbed was he used fable music, he is a man of culture.
I could listen to videos like this for hours.
The vibes in this video are absolutely immaculate as always, especially for something I had no idea about
Zul'farrak always seemed like an exceptional case.
It's quest variety and how spread across the world they are (and the fact it's an 'outdoor' dungeon) is a real treat

THIS is what I miss about WoW. The traveling, the story telling, and the WORLD
Metzen would say during the game's development that the world is the main character. I think that's been lost in Retail a little bit.
There are luckily good alternatives to blizzard's nonsense. Like turtle wow. Great vanilla+ experience. They're even planning on remaking vanilla in a new engine.
that guy just added such frequencies in the background usually 432hz to attract viewers.
SoD baby...SoD....
@@Blackrew running Mythic+ is the main character now
"I need you to kill an ancient troll god."
"I will accept your quest, what is at stake if this god of the deep is left to its devices?"

I really enjoyed how you told this quest line as a story. Well done!
This is amazing, thank you. Also, your voice is PERFECT for this type of content!
The mundane activities and areas are what help to make the epic quests and environs more memorable
This channel is a goldmine. Please, make more of this.

"Death Lullaby", Medieval II: Total War was all I needed to keep watching :)
i love your videos, mate. this you always convey exactly the feeling i had playing classic back in the days. thank you for letting me relive some of what has been lost over the years.
God, this video brought me so much joy. A blast of nostalgia in a really good way. Definitely subscribed, so glad I found this.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It's clear how much time and effort you put into your content, so I'm excited that I've found this channel.
I love long fetched quests like these. Like the shaman's water totem and the druid's water form quests
informative, comforting, atmospheric, entertaining, endearing? all of the above, and much more! Thank you for your hard work♥
I have started my journey into WoW this weekend. There is a whole world full of stories now for me to explore.
what a time to be a part-time employee 😁

Dude I LOVE watching your videos! Your presentation style is amazing and your super chill voice really helps me just veg out and relax! Keep em’ coming!!!
Even after all these years, and having done most of this, this was fascinating to me. Excellent story telling!
Wow. you can tell this dude put massive effort into this, and it's great. Only 1.5k views is criminal.
Very well done video again. The production value on these just keeps getting better! ❤
Cant wait until you unpack all the History around the Arathi Highland humans. So much history there.
Loved that you used Medieval II soundtrack . Fitted perfectly
Great video, really loving the presentation and music. Great work mate
The cutest way of trying and almost failing to adress your supporters at the end there. Lovely content as always Verigan.
I love your style of story telling; your style never bores me; keep it up!
I would love to see a darker story covered in your style; like the Blood Elf Paladin Mount quest or the Stalvan Mistmantle one 😊
I love the use of Age of Mythology music. Works really well inn the video.
I love placing the smaller details of your videos. For example the use of music from Mount and blade works so well in these sequences. Very nice video!
This is an excellent way to present quest content, bravo
Did this guy just hit me with an Age of Mythology ost from the start? Subbed.
The EverQuest music at the end ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I love this channel, thank you.
The troll city in the Hinterlands is by far one of my favorite world areas in the game.
I love your WoW content. I look forward to you releasing new content. Thank you for your hard work. I hope it is paying off for you.
Did not expect that Greater Faydark / Kelethin at 15:00 but I'm glad it's there.
I love the Age of Mythology music, I recognized it immediately
Great storytelling! Thank you for sharing
With the amount of running around in original WoW, a 3% increase in speed was a massive boon
Great presentation, Verigan.
thank you!
Absolutely loved this
what a great and well made video. thank you a lot for the entertainment!!
I remember, nostalgically but not quite fondly, using all the riding enchantments to run around Eastern Plaugelands again and again to farm herbs so I could buy my level 60 mount 😅
These videos are truly fantastic!
Good times this brings back , my fave part of the vid is the orc warrior on the Gahz fight sporting a chefs hat lol
That was a great video! I remember it quite well in the shimmering flats. I kind of enjoyed it. It was a very plain plane. It felt like it had been something bigger at some other point. Like some basin of water or something. It was, in all its deadness, somewhat awe-inspiring.

Damn didn't expect that Kelethin music to kick in.
thanks for this, it was very nice to relax to and enjoy the scenery
Your humor helps too :)
Many of the music samples seem similar to old computer games of the '90s, like Heroes of Might & Magic II. That old midi feel :)
The final summary of the quest could be one-to-one redirected to (Vanilla) WoW as a whole.
It's about the journey and the memories made on the way.
Another sick video man, well done.
love how the AOM theme music fits so well
I did this quest in Wrath, and I'm pretty sure you don't need the mallet to summon Gahzrilla, to which I say BOO!
Did the full quest anyway. Totally worth it, as it was indeed about the journey and not the destination.
yeah, unfortunately they removed that in wrath! at least we got the model though - makes for a good thumbnail!
AOM meadow soundtrack is GODTIER
tyvm for using it
Amazing video, please keep them coming!
Loving the Medieval 2 music. Oddly fitting with Warcraft.
Cataclysm's drastic change to the Thousand Needles did at least come with some cool things, despite probably making it less fun to explore as it once was. Over the hills and far away, Flanders, Portugal, and Spain 🎶
Music choice is on point. And great video! +1 sub
You can't seriously hit me with a banger medieval 2 track at the beginning of a video with no warning lol
obsessed with the intro!!
hey this is pretty good
makes me feel nostalgic for when i could play mmos and enjoy the world instead of just trying to make number get big
So well done, great job. Memories. :)
Fighting Gahzrilla on land? Ballsy move! That's what the water is for!
To be fair, the best way to reward a player for traveling across the world is to give them a way to do it faster lmfao.

Lol, ending with the EverQuest Kelethin music. Noice.
Loved the Medieval 2 TW soundtrack use! 😉
Love to see a new video pop up 😳
Everquest music? You've been around! Love the video!
awesome video as per usual!
Carrot on a stick....I think that was my first trinket ever....
Beautiful new intro!
that intro is awesome!
15:35 Still have my Carrot On A Stick from my first Vanilla main! Good times 🤙🏻
New Verigan video out hell yeah! Today is gonna be a good day :)
TurtleWoW made it so you can actually participate in the races.
