How to Build a 300MPH Tire

- Top Fuel Dragsters are some of the fastest cars on the planet. But 11,000 horsepower doesn't do you any good if you have no way to put it to the ground.
I made a video about the incredible engineering behind the engines of Top Fuel cars, and today I wanted to talk about the other incredible aspect of these cars... The tires. The tires used on Dragsters and Funny Cars are incredible, but why are they soft? Why do they wrinkle like that when the car launches and how do they stretch out at high speeds?
And how was Michelin able to create the world's first production tire able to reach 300MPH? The Bugatti Chiron was the first production car to hit 300MPH, and it's all down to the engineers at Michelin for making it possible.

Excellent video. Ive watched like 8 of your vids, they all fell like you could spend hours talking about this stuff. Quality stuff man!
Great comment as usual Why Tho. You are my hero in every essence of the word. Keep it up!

you are very good at explaining things, thank alot for that 🙏
The way you explain so many complex concepts in such an easy to understand manner while still managing to making it sound exciting is so refreshing.
2nd video of yours I've seen. Love domain knowledge explained clearly and concisely. Nice job.
Not a car guy, but you got a sub for the ridiculously clear communication, super quality flow. Its clear that you could probably info dump like 100X times more lol. Looking forward to the tire video.
True statement right there
They’re only $1000? Seriously
I thought they’re be more
lol you say only like you could afford 3 of them because you act like it won’t break….
@@uniq7778no, its just shockingly low. dont be a prick
Well they only get used for a day tops so thats pretty expensive
The new tire is only used once. After that they are basically repaired. They only last a race or two
Great work man. You make excellent videos. With no BS.
First video of yours I have watched and I’m incredibly impressed. You are logical and concise in your delivery and opened my eyes to things I’ve never thought about like the expansion of the tire acting as a gear. Obvious when you think about it but something I may have never thought about without watching your video.
My absolute favorite subject! Top Fuel & Funny Car engineering is absolutely incredible
Can't wait to share this with my kids! As a group of mountain bikers, we understand low psi and rolling rsistance, but not at high speeds. Knowing the soft sidewalls act as a clutch, and what the centripetal force does at high speed, really gives me a new perspective.
Love your videos man! No bullshit, just great explanations. Clear and well spoken. Thanks please keep it going
*holds up racing slick* Isn’t this cool?
Me, looking at my NASCAR slick turned table: Sure is!
bro the stats you know about this subject is inspiring. awesome vid!!!
love finding new quality car channels! Subbed!
Just watched your dragster engine video when you hinted at this. Ive always been curious why the tires wrinkle but never looked it up lol. Thanks for the great explanation.
Wow, that was really interesting. Thanks!
Hey dude, nice presentation. I don't think I've ever heard a more succinct explanation of some of the physics constraining our land rockets.
Wow. Excellent underrated video
Great video in new to the channel and to drag racing. I find your videos informative and so interesting keep sharing your passion and knowledge, from UK 🇬🇧
U need to learn about John Force. He's been racing since the early 70s. He's like 75yrs old, he just had a wreck 3 months ago. The man is THE LEGEND of NHRA.
Super informative. Thanks, Jonny!
I don’t leave comments often, first video I’ve watched of yours, great explanation and pure information from first second to last second subbed bro.
Wow this was super interesting, awesome video documentary!
Really good vid. I do have to point out that nobody using beadlocks will use an air bead seater (see at 0:18) because you manually fit the tire to the wheel and lock the tire bead down with the beadlock rings.
Good video. Well done. Thank you.
Looking at the high speed it's amazing those tires don't just get completely shredded by the insane power being delivered to them.
Uber Super Cool vid. Gnarly details!
Beadlocks are becoming somewhat popular on high horsepower "street" cars. If you look at platforms like the Supra, GTR, or any V10TT (R8, Viper, Lamborghini), most of the shops putting out 2000+ hp kits are using beadlocks.
This was awesome man. New subscriber ✌🏻
crazy how the internet never sleeps teaching me new stuff!
What I can't get over is all that shock and awe of horsepower is delivered to a couple of meshed pieces of steel in the differential. Maybe 3 or 4 square inches of contact.
Look at that JIGGLE 😩
Are you going to take it on a date
Fascinating topic, but air resistance increases quadratically with speed, not cubically.
Good video 👍
Well done sir.
Great video!
3:14 Love how the paint has been ripped off by the heat and thrust of the exhaust gases.
Wow, good video.
don't panic but I think there's a bear in your room ;) nice vid I never tought about drag tires but I did know from the failures of tireless wheels that sports tires are incredible creations they do so much I never go cheap on tires, only thing preventing going from car driver to figure skater
That's how you do it. Delivered perfectly.
3:58 Force required to push against the atmosphere (drag) goes like velocity^2. Power goes like velocity^3. Dimensional analysis!
Very interesting!
Great commentary. The one on the dragster engine was incredible. This was great too.
Not really a production car since its a 1/1 but I've heard the C4 Sledgehammer in 1988 was the first street legal car to break 250mph, and was actually faster than the Veyron until the Super Sport came out in 2010.
"You can only do so much with rubber." I've had a thought tumbling around my head for a while, and as cars get faster and faster, it keeps coming up in random thoughts I have: What other way would I try to design a tire? I'm talking a tire that isn't rubber, air, metal. While I'm sure tire manufacturers have looked into this idea in their R&D departments, they, ultimately, can't pour the time and money it would take to experiment because they...well, sell tires. They are publicly traded companies and are required, often by law, to produce profits.
So what other elements or compounds could create grip, be durable and flexible yet be affordable or at the very least be able to be produced in the first place?
Bc I've had the same question bouncing around in my head for years.
It's amazing how those tires wind up like a rubber band and then unleash hell
2:43 cars don’t hit terminal velocity, that’s a term used for objects free-falling.
Terminal velocity just means end velocity, since the terminal phase is the end phase.
I love this guy who keeps a tire in their bedroom??
My dad used to drive sprint cars when I was growing up. He had two right rear tires off the car in our living room with pieces of glass cut into a circle laying flat on top. We had right rear sprint car tire end tables buddy! And I thought everybody just had tires in their living room till I was about 20 yrs old! It was just normal to me! 🤷🏽♂️... 🙃🫠
The frame of a top fuel , the torque and loads, could you do a video about ?
I knew the engineering was complex, but I didn’t know how complex. Great video.
about those landspeed metal wheels, is there any difference with it being thrust based acceleration versus torque? one spins the wheels while the other ,for lack of better words, just rolling.
Hennessy broke the 300mph barrier back in 2008 with the venom, Bugatti didn’t do it first
Not a production car…many specialty cars had broken that before.
Nooice!!
Question: how many races can you run a tire on a dragster? Are they finished after just one race?
Google says they are designed for 8 runs down the track but the top funded teams go as little as 1 to 3 runs.
The Porsche 959 was the first to hit 200mph in 1986. The F-40 hit 201mph less than six months later.
Huge hypothetical and weird question. Would you be able to recycle these tires and put the rubber on shoes? Would it be insanely expensive to recycle those tires?
Price ?
9850 pounds of torque actually. As measured at the driveshaft on the Toyota top fuel car. Thats 12,800 horsepower.
A gearbox has gears on it.
A "Transmission" doesn't necessarily contain gears.
🔥
Yeah, bead locks are WAY more inconvenient than having to send your wheels off to get the tires replaced.
But no, I get it, but it's more of a liability/image thing than "it has to be done this way" thing. If they'd gone with bead locks, some tire company would start selling that size that was just a standard radial and rich people being rich people....
6:17 thats actually not the whole truth. I forget which super car it was now. At speeds near 300, the tire actually cools faster than the heat generated from friction. that results in a slightly lower tire pressure. Of course i cant find where i read that now though.
There was a time in my life where I thought drag racing was just caveman go fast, but then you look into what nitro drag racing involves and you realize how batshit crazy it all is
Except all of the drag racing classes with an open tire choice. We all use Hoosiers! lol
you deserve more viewers
I’m shocked that tire only cost that much. I would have thought double that.
I imagine all the "free" advertising via the sidewall lettering helps offset the cost.
The !!EXHAUST ALONE!! pushes about 1000 pounds of downforce!
One thing is for absolute certain.
If you drive……, make sure you have a good set of properly maintained tires on your car. ☝️
Okay!???!
Why are they bias ply?!?!? Wouldn't radial be better??
Radial tires have reinforced sidewalls. They won't wrinkle the same way. Plus, tire pressures are very low for maximum contact. Low pressure in radials cause the steel belts to fray and cause millions of tiny leaks.
@michaelmoore7975 ohhh thank you
1.5 miles lifespan for a 1/4 mile race?
i thought the book in the background said frank zappa
👍👍
Damn it's a CVT tyre
Ok now I want to know what the engine produces down force
I know the exhaust produces some thrust but even with high performance engines I wouldn’t expect it to produce enough to make a single pound of thrust 😅
So - what's in the glass? Rum & Coke?!
You from Ohio? Cincy my guy, my dad races for nhra
pretty much the reason why it's a direct drive.
what if we put a v16 on a semi truck
Yo, Johnny, you might want to change the image on your channel page! "Badly Told Stories" is about as inaccurate as you can get nowadays. Heck, even on your earliest videos, while there was the occasional rough patch, you never failed to get the core information across to the audience, and you've improved since then!
So, yeah. Maybe not "Badly Told Stories". Perhaps "Racing Tales" instead? Or "Stories From The Track"? "Racing Technicalities for the Non-Technical"? Eh, up to you, but the current phrase is just... Wrong.
Just an FYI for folks who haven't lived through hell: unknowingly running a fixed suspension/fixed gearbox tire (sponsored) on a 4 link/2 speed TH400 car is a great way to waste almost two years of your life and lose all your passion for ultra high hp doorslammers.
My rc car does the same.. We call it cvt tires 😂 free extra bonus speed
Hand made in Akron, Ohio
metrics measures are more understandable.

No it isnt. Its closer to a cvt than a gearbox.
Those tires are more than 1000 dollars
Behr spotted!
And then a guy like Kevin Hart buys one……
How many RedBull you drank before filming this??
About tire price. We're brainwashed because of glued Bugatti tire/rims

It's funny how you think there's like a "coveted" 200, 250 and 300mph barrier, when most of the world doesn't care about mph at all.
Sincerely,
A Geo Metro Owner
But you do
@@b1zzarecont4ct I have no idea what that is
@@UA-camCrisisIntervention Nah, for me it's always been the 300 and 400 km/h barrier.
tires can be internally inflated.... so why cant they be internally cooled? ive got some ideas that will change the auto speed game forever. such as nano tires. that use trillions of nano sized fingers that grip 1000% better than current tire technologies. kinda like how a gecko can stick to glass without effort. combine that with morphable surfaces to give cars active aerodynamics. after that, give ai a few times around the track and it will have found out how to beat human drivers. due to our internal g threshold
Do research and stop reading the internet to get your content. The tires already have a nominal diameter of 36 inches and will grow closer to 41-42 inches at speed.
