- How to use a spin casting reel. How to use a closed face reel. Learn to use a Zebco 202 style kid friendly fishing reel
The spin cast or closed face reel is the best fishing reel for kids or people with limited fishing experience. In this video, full time fishing guide Capt. Chris Myers explains and demonstrates how to operate this type of fishing reel.
A Zebco 202 reel was used in this video but the same operating procedures apply to just about every brand.

I'm 37, city boy, never fished before, have had a pond in my backyard for 2.5 years and the previous owner of the house left me what I learned today to be a spincast reel. I finally got bored enough during quarantine to grab a cheap $10 starter pack of lures from walmart, googled how to attach the hook and I almost caught something today but it got away. After watching this video, I know I was doing everything wrong. From not having 2 feet hanging off the end to not figuring out what the plus minus wheel is for. Also a catfish at least a foot long swam right up to my feet and I felt like it was mocking me lol. Thanks for the video. Very helpful to a rookie like me
Me too partner I’m younger but same boat
Good luck with your fishing venture. It's a great sport and can be addictive.
You’re never too old to learn to fish.
@@brianhuff6662 v no lv lol l
Great story my friend! I'm 60 and basically the same, except I live close to the Gulf. I bought a 202 a couple months ago, but haven't got to try it yet because I'm having a terrible time getting my ID in order to buy a license. The government is ok with giving me a SS check, but not a copy of my birth certificate. Crazy. I'm not giving up. Did you get that smart Alec catfish?
Not only great for kids, they are great for olders too! I just changed my spinning reel for one of these (execpt I bought one with the reel under and a lever instead of a push button) they are great to fish little creek and cast small leures quickly since you can cast with one hand! Sorry for the mistakes I am from quebec! Thks for your videos!
Never fished by myself, fished twice before with some super experienced country boys lol, but it was fun. So I decided yesterday to pick up this pole from Cabela's and get started with my 6 year old daughter. Awesome video and Im looking forward to dishing with her. I just jeed to pick up a bobber, which I forgot 🤦🏾♂️
Started with this and now after about 2 months I'm at baitcaster!
Just wanna say a big thanks for this man. I've only ever been an armature and only ever used a spinning reel, I found an old spinning cast on a box of random fishing gear I brought second hand and had no idea how the it worked or even what the name of it was lol, after finaly working out what the name of the type of reel was I found your video.
The reel is pretty old but I might give it a try just for kicks, thanks again, Ross.
*sorry about the essay lol, but I had the thing ages and it was driving me crazy not knowing how to use it.
Glad I could help!
I’ve been fishing with a spinning reel my whole life and finally now trying out a spincasting reel. Makes my life so much easier lol.
Thanks a lot! Just started with this and had no idea how to use it. Had to wade thorough 10-15 videos to find yours that explained it perfectly.
Thank you introducing this device. Wish great catch and good adventures.
Thank you! I'm 60 and I got the 202. It seemed right for my budget and experience level. I'm having trouble getting my ID, to get a license. It's been sitting there for a couple months now, but I'm not giving up. Someday I will try it.
Thank You...found your video, and i have always used these reels, i am also learning how to use several others as well....already caught a Catfish, Bullhead, and 2 Blue Gill...Lovin' It🕊
Great vid exactly what i was looking for as my 4yo is very interested in fishing and I'm looking to get him his first tackle set
Beautiful pond. Very scenic.
My mom used Zebco 202's and 404's forever. Honestly, I do the same because I've never really felt like any needed anything different.
I had one of those when I was a kid! And I bought one for my 5 year old son!
My first rod and reel is when I'm 14 is the spinning reel and I still using it since
I still use the old push button 🔘 the only one that doesn't failed me.. 202 to 888 are great stuff and work.
Very helpful. We've got a couple of these all-in-one beginner rod/reel sets which they make for little kids, and which have a spin casting reel, but are outgrowing them, but didn't know you could buy spincast reels. We're ready for an upgrade from the 2-foot pole, but like the simplicity of the spincast. Be making a trip to the Walmart over the next couple of days. Thanks for the video.
Very informative thank you sir.
Great video Sr thanks
Hi good explenation...Im left handed and I use my fishing pole with the reel downwards its like the one you showed on the video...am I using it wrong???
Yes. The reel should be on top and that is how the rod was designed to bend. One of things I do not like about most spincast reels is a right handed caster must switch hands to reel it in. You could cast with your left and reel with the right. You can also look online and find a couple models with the handle on the left.
Nice explanation, mine keeps chewing fishingline inside the reel(little metal spindle) any suggestion?
No idea, sorry
I just got my son one. There is left or right handed adjustment?
Most do not have one.
Thank you grandpa!
Jeeze I havent use one in soo long I forgot how they work. I dont fish often but i use spinning reels and now that my son is 3 1/2 i want to get him his first fishing pole
Pues, ya tengo 50 años usando Zebco 202, y es muy maniobrable, no nomás es para niños, yo ya tengo 68 años de edad y 50 años de usar Zebco 202.
Very military like. Nice
I’m 14 and I have a baitcaster reel but sometimes I like to pull my old spincast reel off the shelf and use it
What if you have a big spin caster. Do you use it on the bottom then?
No they are all designed to be held the same, on top.
@@CaptChrisMyers Ok thanks!
Great video! I grew up on a spinning reel and never knew how to use these! I bought one for my wife so we can fish together and I upgraded to a bait cast reel! Thanks!
Thank you
Can you show how to set he drag
For me closed face is my go to easy to use and it catches fish not sure why they get so much hate
Will this have less tangles than a relguler fishing rod
They generally have less issues than spinning rods, especially for beginners.
niceee thank you
Good job😁😁😁😁😁😁
I must have a to heavy sinker on my line cause as soon as I press the button the line drops straight to the ground. I just stop using the reel, I thought the button must be broken. No one I asked about the problem knew why my line just drops.
When you press the button, you must hold it all the way in to keep the line from coming out. If you had a very heavy sinker and the drag way to light, the line could still come out but you would hear a clicking noise as the drag worked. if it is silent, you are either not holding the button in all the way or it is broken.
Can u bottom rig with a spin cast?
Are you referring to making a bottom fishing rig like you would use for catfish? If so, you definitely can.
ok ty and yes thats what i ment@@CaptChrisMyers
I seen some kids/adults take longer to learn those than open face reel, cause of keeping pressed and when to release .
Made in which country?
Aren't you the guy who did the instructions on first time fly casting? Looked like you were at a golf course?
That's me
@@CaptChrisMyers I found it. You saved me with your video. I was in the wilds of Idaho, but still had data. Looked at the vid, and was casting like a champ in 10 minutes!
Do you keep it down when waiting for a bite?
You don't have to hold it all the way down to the water but you need a little room to jerk upwards when a bite happens.
I meant the button on the reel
@@bensonluong8686 The button is pressed when you cast to let the line out. When it lands, you turn the handle until it pops back out then you are ready to fish.
Yes
Boy $20 for the license then $16 for the whole kit! Fishing is cheaper than I thought 😂
Didn’t catch anything though..
Bro u from Ticktok
What if you're left-handed and need to crank from the right?
I do not think they have spin casting reels that are left handed. You should probably get a spinning reel and switch the handle ua-cam.com/video/jEMX_vYESQk/v-deo.html
@@CaptChrisMyers Zebco 33 can go left or right.
I'm thinking of getting one for my father in law, as he regularly tangles, breaks or loses conventional reels
Why are the cranks on the right? I want to cast right handed, and reel left handed, naturally
Never understood that. Probably designed by the same people who use baitcast reels. Now they make them with interchangeable handles or with handles on the left.
So.. how is this any easier than a spinning reel?
A lot less tangles and knots. Seems to be easier for most kids to cast.
@@CaptChrisMyers So good for a 76 yr old who keeps tangling... Mmm...
Ima kid and yes baitcaster and spinning reels not spincasts
I destroyed all the spincasters my dad bought for me and my brother when I didn't fish for 20 years and tried using them again in my 30s...oops!
"best fishing reel for kids" best part of this video. Not for grown men.
